The subject invention is directed to product packaging, and more particularly, to retail ready packages configured for shipping and displaying six-sided products and eight-sided products in an upright position.
Retailers, such as big-box stores, superstores and warehouse clubs sell large quantities of fast moving consumer goods. These retailers often want to have items shipped from their distribution centers to the stores in unit loads and bulk boxes that can be stocked without handling of the merchandise.
The goal for corrugated shipping containers is to put case goods directly onto shelves and stocking locations without individually handling the unit packs or primary packages. To this end, retailers often require products to come in shelf ready packaging to reduce stocking costs and save labor expenses. Shelf-ready packaging, also known as, retail ready packaging refers to the packaging of a product so that it is delivered to a retailer in packaging optimized for efficient stocking and sale.
It would be beneficial to provide a retail ready package for shipping and displaying multi-sided products, such as six-sided and eight-sided frozen food packages in an upright position.
The subject invention is directed to a new and useful retail ready package for shipping and displaying products, such as, for example, frozen food packages or the like. The retail ready package includes front and rear panels each having at least six sides and being spaced apart from one another along a longitudinal axis of the package when the package is in a shipping condition. The front and rear panels each have a perforation line associated therewith that facilitate a conversion of the package into an open-topped product display tray having a generally hexagonal shaped cross-section, which extends in a plane that is transverse to the longitudinal axis of the package. In one embodiment of the package, the front and rear panels both have six sides.
In another embodiment of the invention, the front and rear panels both have eight sides. Preferably, the perforation line associated with the front panel delineates a removable front panel portion and a remaining front panel portion. The front panel preferably includes an opening above the perforation line associated therewith for aiding in opening the perforation line to facilitate the conversion of the package into an open-topped product display tray.
In one embodiment of the invention, the perforation line associated with the rear panel facilitates separation of the rear panel from a top panel of the package. In another embodiment of the invention, the perforation line associated with the rear panel delineates a removable rear panel portion and a remaining rear panel portion.
Preferably, the package has a bottom panel with a rectangular center portion, first and second inner side bottom portions, and first and second outer side bottom portions. In an embodiment of the invention, the bottom panel has a longitudinal perforation line that facilitates a separation of the product display tray into two separate open-topped trays. In such an instance, the front panel includes a central gap and the rear panel includes a central perforation line in the remaining portion thereof to facilitate the separation of the product display tray into two separate open-topped product display trays.
The subject invention is also directed to a die-cut blank for forming a retail ready package, which includes a top panel, a bottom panel, a front panel and a rear panel. The top panel of the blank has a rectangular center portion, a first top side flap foldably connected to a first side edge of the rectangular center portion, and a second top side flap foldably connected to a second side edge of the rectangular center portion.
The rear panel of the blank has a rear panel having a center portion with at least six sides foldably connected to a top rear edge of the rectangular center portion of the top panel, a first rear side flap foldably connected to a first side edge of the center portion of the rear panel, and second rear side flap foldably connected to a second side edge of the center portion of the rear panel.
The bottom panel of the blank has a bottom panel has a rectangular center portion foldably connected to a bottom rear edge of the center portion of the rear panel, a first inner side bottom portion foldably connected to a first side edge of the rectangular center portion of the bottom panel, a first outer side bottom portion foldably connected to the first inner side bottom portion, a second inner side bottom portion connected to a second side edge of the rectangular center portion of the bottom panel, and a second outer side bottom portion foldably connected to the second inner side bottom portion.
The front panel of the blank has a center portion with at least six sides foldably connected to the a bottom front edge of the rectangular center portion of the bottom panel, a first front side flap foldably connected to a first edge of the center portion of the front panel, a second front side flap foldably connected to a second edge of the center portion of the front panel, and a front flap foldably connected to a top front edge the center portion of the front panel.
A perforation line extends across the front panel through the first side flap, the center portion and the second side flap thereof, to define a removable part of the front panel and a remaining part of the front panel, and the center portion of the rear panel is foldably connected to the top rear edge of the rectangular center portion of the top panel along a top perforation line to facilitate a separation of the top panel from the rear panel together with the removable part of the front panel. Preferably, an opening is formed in the center portion of the front panel below the gap in the perforation line to aide in splitting the front panel in half.
Preferably, a gap interrupts the perforation line within the center portion of the front panel. In an embodiment of the invention, a continuous perforation line extends across the rear panel through the first side flap, the center portion and the second side flap thereof, to define a removable part of the rear panel. In another embodiment of the invention, a perforation line bisects the center portion of the bottom panel, and a perforation line bisects the center portion of the rear panel between the continuous perforation line in the rear panel and the bottom rear edge of the center portion of the bottom panel.
It is envisioned that the center portion of the rear panel and the center portion of the front panel can both have either six sides or eight sides. In embodiments of the invention wherein the center portion of the front and rear panels has eight sides, the top panel further includes a first outer top side flap foldably connected to an outer side edge of the first top side flap, and a second outer top side flap foldably connected to an outer side edge of the second top side flap.
These and other features of the retail ready packages of the subject invention and the die-cut blanks for forming the packages will become more readily apparent to those having ordinary skill in the art to which the subject invention appertains from the detailed description of the preferred embodiments taken in conjunction with the following brief description of the drawings.

Moreover, as discussed in detail below, because of the unique configuration of the retail ready package 100, when a plurality of such packages are shipped together on a pallet in a refrigerated transport container, the openings or gaps that are formed between the oppositely angled corners of adjacent packages allow cold air to flow throughout the pallet, ensuring that the frozen food items contained within the packages on the pallet will remain at a sufficiently low temperature to prevent the food items from thawing during shipping, which would be undesirable.

When erecting a package from the blank 310, it is preferable not to include glue in the junction areas between top and rear side flaps 325 and 344, as well as the junction area between top and rear side flaps 327 and 346, so that the top portions of the package can swing freely relative to the bottom portions of the package when the package is converted into an open-topped tray.

The unique three-dimensional shape of the retail ready packages of the subject invention, with their six-sided or eight-sided front and rear panels, provide certain benefits. For example, when a plurality of these packages are shipped together on a pallet in a refrigerated transport container, the openings or gaps formed between the oppositely angled corners of adjacent packages will allow cold air to flow throughout the pallet, ensuring that frozen food items within the pallet will remain a sufficiently low temperature to prevent the food items from thawing.
While the subject disclosure has been shown and described with reference to preferred embodiments, those skilled in the art will readily appreciate that changes or modifications may be made thereto without departing from the spirit or scope of the subject disclosure.
