Claims
- 1. A wireless communication system comprising:an electronic device including a housing and an opening in the housing; and a communication card that is sized and configured to be selectively inserted and removed from the opening in the housing, the communication card being electrically connected to the electronic device when the communication card is inserted through the opening in the housing of the electronic device, the communication card being capable of providing wireless communication abilities to the electronic device, the communication card comprising: a body portion including an upper surface and a lower surface; and an antenna portion including an upper surface and a lower surface, the antenna portion being slidably movable along a longitudinal axis relative to the body portion, the antenna portion being movable between an extended position and a retracted position when the communication card is electrically connected to the electronic device, the antenna portion being movable between an extended position in which the antenna portion is at least substantially disposed outside the housing of the electronic device and a retracted position in which the antenna portion is at least substantially disposed inside the housing of the electronic device, the communication card conforming with the Personal Computer (PC) card standards when the antenna portion is in the retracted position, the upper surface and the lower surface of the body portion and the antenna portion being substantially aligned in the same plane and substantially contiguous when the antenna portion is in the retracted position.
- 2. The wireless communication system as in claim 1, further comprising a width and a thickness of the body portion of the communication card, and a width and a thickness of the antenna portion of the communication card, the width and thickness of the body portion of the communication card being generally the same as the width and thickness of the antenna portion of the communication card.
- 3. The wireless communication system as in claim 1, wherein the antenna portion is detachably connected to the body portion of the communication card.
- 4. The wireless communication system as in claim 1, further comprising a flexible wire interconnecting the antenna portion and body portion of the communication card to allow electrical communication between the antenna portion and body portion of the communication card.
- 5. The wireless communication system as in claim 1, wherein the antenna portion of the communication card includes a radiating element, a ground plane and impedance matching circuitry.
- 6. The wireless communication system as in claim 1, further comprising an antenna attached to the antenna portion.
- 7. The wireless communication system as in claim 1, wherein a width of the antenna portion is substantially less than a width of the body portion of the communication card.
- 8. A communication card that is capable of providing wireless communication to a host device, the communication card comprising:a body portion including an upper surface and a lower surface; and an antenna portion including an upper surface and a lower surface, the antenna portion being slidably attached to the body portion along a longitudinal axis, the antenna portion being movable between a retracted position in which the antenna portion is disposed proximate to the body portion and an extended position in which the antenna portion is spaced apart from the body portion, the upper surface and the lower surface of the body portion and the antenna portion being substantially aligned in the same plane and substantially contiguous when the antenna portion is in the retracted position; wherein the communication card conforms to the Personal Computer (PC) card standards when the antenna portion is in the retracted portion.
- 9. The communication card as in claim 8, wherein the antenna portion is at least substantially disposed outside the host device in the extended position; and wherein the antenna portion is at least substantially disposed inside the host device in the retracted position.
- 10. The communication card as in claim 8, further comprising a guide track in the body portion of the communication card and a guide extending from the antenna portion of the communication card, the guide and guide track cooperating to allow the antenna portion to be slidably connected to the body portion along the longitudinal axis.
- 11. A communication card that is capable of providing wireless communication to a host device, the communication card comprising:a body portion including a top surface, a bottom surface, a first side and a second side; and an antenna portion including a top surface, a bottom surface, a first side and a second side, the antenna portion being is slidably attached to the body portion along a longitudinal axis, the antenna portion being movable between a retracted position in which the antenna portion is disposed proximate to the body portion and an extended position in which the antenna portion is spaced apart from the body portion; wherein the top surface of the body portion and the top surface of the antenna portion are located in generally the same plane in both the extended position and the retracted position, and the bottom surface of the body portion and the bottom surface of the antenna portion are located in generally the same plane in both the extended position and the retracted position.
- 12. The communication card as in claim 11, wherein the communication card conforms to the Personal Computer (PC) card standards when the antenna portion is in the retracted portion.
- 13. A wireless communication system comprising:an electronic device including a housing and an opening in the housing; and a communication card that is detachably connected to the electronic device through the opening in the housing, the communication card comprising: a body portion including an upper surface and a lower surface; and an antenna portion including an upper surface and a lower surface, the antenna portion being slidably movable along a longitudinal axis relative to the body portion, the antenna portion being movable between an extended position and a retracted position when the communication card is inserted into the opening in the electronic device, the antenna portion being movable between an extended position in which the antenna portion is at least substantially disposed outside the housing of the electronic device and a retracted position in which the antenna portion is at least substantially disposed inside the housing of the electronic device, the communication card conforming with the Personal Computer (PC) card standards when the antenna portion is in the retracted position, the upper surface and the lower surface of the body portion and the antenna portion being substantially aligned in the same plane and substantially contiguous when the antenna portion is in the retracted position.
- 14. The wireless communication system as in claim 13, further comprising a width and a thickness of the body portion of the communication card, and a width and a thickness of the antenna portion of the communication card, the width and thickness of the body portion of the communication card being generally the same as the width and thickness of the antenna portion of the communication card.
- 15. The wireless communication system as in claim 13, wherein the antenna portion is detachably connected to the body portion of the communication card.
- 16. The wireless communication system as in claim 13, further comprising a flexible wire interconnecting the antenna portion and body portion of the communication card to allow electrical communication between the antenna portion and body portion of the communication card.
- 17. The wireless communication system as in claim 13, wherein the antenna portion of the communication card includes a radiating element, a ground plane and impedance matching circuitry.
- 18. The wireless communication system as in claim 13, further comprising an antenna attached to the antenna portion.
- 19. The wireless communication system as in claim 13, wherein a width of the antenna portion is substantially less than a width of the body portion of the communication card.
