Claims
- 1. An awning attachment for a golf cart, said awning having means for attachment to a rear portion of a roof member and support framework of said cart, said awning attachment comprising a framework comprised of a plurality of U-shaped rib members and a fabric cover, said U-shaped rib members being positioned adjacent to an underneath side of said fabric cover, each of said U-shaped rib members having opposing arms terminating in opposing ends, each of said opposing ends of said U-shaped rib members being respectively connected at common pivot points whereby said rib-members are adapted to be moved relative to each other such that said awning is adapted to be moved between an extended deployed position and a retracted closed position over a rear compartment of said cart.
- 2. The awning attachment for a golf cart of claim 1 in which a first U-shaped rib member of said awning is adapted to be positioned at said rear portion of said roof member of said cart, each consecutive adjacent rib member having a dimension less than that of a preceding adjacent rib member, whereby each said rib member is adapted to nest within its preceding adjacent rib member so that said awning is capable of lying substantially in a common plane when in said retracted closed position.
- 3. The awning attachment for a golf cart of claim 2 in which said awning is adapted to lie substantially flush with said rear portion of said roof member of said cart when in said closed position.
- 4. The awning attachment for a golf cart of claim 1 in which fabric sleeves are disposed on said underneath side of said fabric cover, each of said sleeves receiving one of said U-shaped rib members.
- 5. The awning attachment for a golf cart of claim 1 further comprising a gathering flap member disposed on a top of said fabric cover and toward a forward edge thereof, said flap member extending along a substantial width of said awning, said flap member having a free end with a length sufficient to wrap around said U-shaped members in a securing relationship when in said retracted closed position.
- 6. The awning attachment for a golf cart of claim 1 in which a first U-shaped rib member of said awning is adapted to be positioned at said rear portion of said roof member of said cart, each consecutive adjacent rib member having a dimension less than that of a preceding adjacent rib member, whereby each said rib member is adapted to nest within its preceding adjacent rib member so that said awning is capable of lying substantially in a common plane when in said retracted closed position, said awning being adapted to lie substantially flush with said rear portion of said roof member of said cart when in said retracted closed position, a plurality of fabric sleeves being disposed on said underneath side of said fabric cover, each of said sleeves receiving one of said U-shaped rib members, a gathering flap member being disposed on a top of said fabric cover toward a forward edge thereof, said flap member extending along a substantial width of said awning, said flap member having a free end with a length sufficient to wrap around said U-shaped members in a securing relationship when in said retracted closed position.
- 7. An awning attachment for a golf cart, said awning being adapted for attachment to a rear of said cart, said awning attachment comprising a framework comprised of a plurality of U-shaped rib members and a fabric cover, said U-shaped rib members engaging an underneath side of said fabric cover, each of said U-shaped rib members having opposing arms terminating in opposing ends, each of said opposing ends of said U-shaped rib members being respectively connected at common pivot points whereby said rib members are adapted to be moved relative to each other such that said awning is adapted to be moved between an extended deployed position and a retracted closed position over a rear compartment of said cart, a first U-shaped rib member of said awning being adapted to be positioned at a rear portion of a roof member of said cart, each consecutive adjacent rib member having a dimension less than that of a preceding adjacent rib member, whereby each said rib member is adapted to nest within its preceding adjacent rib member so that said awning is capable of lying substantially in a common plane when in said retracted closed position.
- 8. The awning attachment for a golf cart of claim 7 in which said awning is adapted to lie substantially flush with said rear portion of said roof member of said cart when in said closed position.
- 9. The awning attachment for a golf cart of claim 7 in which a plurality of fabric sleeves are disposed on said underneath side of said fabric cover, each of said sleeves receiving one of said U-shaped rib members.
- 10. The awning attachment for a golf cart of claim 7 in which a gathering flap member is disposed on a top of said fabric cover and toward a forward edge thereof, said flap member extending along a substantial width of said awning, said flap member having a free end with a length sufficient to wrap around said U-shaped members in a securing relationship when in said retracted closed position.
- 11. The awning attachment for a golf cart of claim 7 in which a first U-shaped rib member of said awning is adapted to be positioned substantially at a rear portion of a roof member of said cart, each consecutive adjacent rib member having a dimension less than that of a preceding adjacent rib member, whereby each said rib member is adapted to nest within its preceding adjacent rib member so that said awning is capable of lying in a common plane when in said retracted closed position, said awning being adapted to lie flush with said rear portion of said roof member of said cart when in said retracted closed position, a plurality of fabric sleeves being disposed on said underneath side of said fabric cover, each of said sleeves receiving one of said U-shaped rib members, a gathering flap member being disposed on a top of said fabric cover and toward a forward edge thereof, said flap member extending along a substantial width of said awning, said flap member having a free end with a length sufficient to wrap around said U-shaped members in a securing relationship when in said retracted closed position.
- 12. An awning attachment for a golf cart, said golf cart having a top supported by at least a pair of spaced apart upstanding support members located near a rear portion of said top, said awning being adapted for attachment and support from said support members, said awning attachment comprising a nesting framework and a fabric cover, said fabric cover being secured to the framework and the framework being movable between an extended position whereat a rear portion of the cart is covered and a retracted position whereat the rear portion of the cart is exposed.
- 13. The awning attachment of claim 12 wherein said awning attachment framework further comprises a forward edge, said forward edge being positioned substantially adjacent the cart top as said awning attachment is attached to thereby substantially prevent rain or the like from passing between the forward edge and the top.
- 14. The awning attachment of claim 13 wherein said nesting framework comprises a plurality of U-shaped rib members, said U-shaped rib members being sized to nest substantially into a common plane as the awning is moved into its retracted position.
- 15. The awning attachment of claim 14 wherein said rib members are pivotally connected to each other.
- 16. The awning attachment of claim 15 wherein said pivotal connection is substantially at the ends of said rib members.
- 17. The awning attachment of claim 16 wherein said framework comprises four rib members.
- 18. The awning attachment of claim 14 further comprising a pair of mounting brackets associated with either side thereof, said mounting brackets being mounted at one end thereof to the framework and adapted to mount at their other ends to the support members and thereby support the awning from the cart.
- 19. The awning attachment of claim 18 wherein said framework includes a rib member at least at each of two opposing sides of the awning attachment, the fabric being secured to extend therebetween, and wherein the brackets are mounted to one of said rib members.
- 20. The awning attachment of claim 19 further comprising a window located in said fabric so that as said awning is moved into its extended position the window is positioned to allow viewing therethrough and out the back of the cart.
- 21. The awning attachment of claim 20 further comprising a fabric flap associated with said fabric cover and located to conveniently wrap around the framework as it is moved into the retracted position to thereby secure the framework and awning in said retracted position.
- 22. An awning attachment for a golf cart, said golf cart having a top supported by at least a pair of spaced apart upstanding support members located near a rear portion of said top, said awning being adapted for attachment to and support solely from said support members, said awning attachment comprising a framework and a fabric cover, said fabric cover being secured to the framework and the framework being movable between an extended position whereat a rear portion of the cart is covered and a retracted position whereat the rear portion of the cart is exposed.
- 23. The awning attachment of claim 22 further comprising a pair of support brackets secured to each of two opposing sides of the framework, said support brackets providing the structure for attachment and support of the awning.
- 24. The awning attachment of claim 23 wherein said framework comprises a nesting plurality of U-shaped rib members, said rib members being pivotally connected substantially at their ends.
- 25. The awning attachment of claim 24 wherein said framework includes one of said rib members at least at each of two a front and back of the awning attachment, the fabric being secured to extend therebetween, and wherein the support brackets are mounted to one of said rib members.
- 26. The awning attachment of claim 25 further comprising a transition plate extending between and mounted to the one of said rib members at an opposing side oriented closest to the top and the top.
- 27. An awning attachment for a golf cart, said golf cart having a top supported by at least a pair of spaced apart upstanding support members located near a rear portion of said top, said awning being mounted to said golf cart and including a transition plate, said awning attachment comprising a framework and a fabric cover, said fabric cover being secured to the framework and the framework being movable between an extended position whereat a rear portion of the cart is covered and a retracted position whereat the rear portion of the cart is exposed, the transition plate extending between the top and the awning and extending along a substantial width of said awning and top to thereby substantially bridge any gap therebetween.
- 28. The awning attachment of claim 27 wherein said framework comprises a nesting plurality of U-shaped rib members, said rib members being pivotally connected substantially at their ends.
- 29. The awning attachment of claim 28 wherein said framework includes one of said rib members at least at each of a front and back of the awning attachment, the fabric being secured to extend therebetween, and further comprising at least one support bracket mounted at either side of one of said rib members, each of said support brackets being further being mounted to one of the upstanding support members.
- 30. The awning attachment of claim 29 wherein said transition plate includes an upturned flange at a forward end thereof for fitting under a lip of the top to provide an overlapping joint, and a plurality of connectors for connecting the plate flange and top in said overlapping orientation.
- 31. The awning attachment of claim 30 further comprising a plurality of connectors for connecting the rear end of said transition plate to one of said rib members.
- 32. An awning attachment for a golf cart, said golf cart having a top supported by at least a pair of spaced apart upstanding support members located near a rear portion of said top, said awning being mounted to said golf cart by at least a transition plate, said awning attachment comprising a framework and a fabric cover, said fabric cover being secured to the framework and the framework being movable between an extended position whereat a rear portion of the cart is covered and a retracted position whereat the rear portion of the cart is exposed, the transition plate extending between the top and the awning and extending along a substantial width of said awning and top to thereby substantially bridge any gap therebetween.
- 33. The awning attachment of claim 32 further comprising a top mounting bracket, said top mounting bracket being mounted to and extending between said spaced apart upstanding support members, said transition plate being mounted to said top mounting bracket.
- 34. The awning attachment of claim 33 wherein said transition plate includes an upstanding flange portion, said upstanding flange portion lying substantially adjacent to the top mounting bracket as the two are mounted to each other.
- 35. The awning attachment of claim 34 wherein the flange provides the mounting surface for attachment to the top mounting bracket.
- 36. The awning attachment of claim 35 wherein the transition plate is sufficiently sized to space the awning attachment near the rear of the golf cart to substantially cover the rear portion in its extended position.
- 37. An awning attachment for a golf cart, said golf cart having a top supported by at least a pair of spaced apart upstanding support members located near a rear portion of said top, said awning being adapted for attachment to and support from said support members, said awning attachment comprising a framework and a fabric cover, said framework comprising at least a U-shaped rib member located at a forward edge of said fabric cover and a U-shaped rib member located at a rear edge of said fabric cover, said fabric cover being secured to the framework and the framework being movable between an extended position whereat a rear portion of the cart is covered and a retracted position whereat the rear portion of the cart is exposed.
- 38. The awning attachment for a golf cart of claim 37 further comprising a transition plate extending between the forward U-shaped rib member and the top of the golf cart, said transition plate having an upturned flange for fit into the golf cart top.
- 39. The awning attachment for a golf cart of claim 39 further comprising a top mounting bracket mounted to the upstanding support members and extending across the rear of the cart, said transition plate being mounted thereto for supporting the awning attachment from the cart.
- 40. The awning attachment for a golf cart of claim 39 wherein said U-shaped rib members are pivotally connected to each other.
- 41. An awning attachment for a golf cart, said golf cart having a top supported by at least a pair of spaced apart upstanding support members located near a rear portion of said top, said awning being adapted for attachment to and support from said support members, said awning attachment comprising a framework and a fabric cover, said framework comprising a plurality of U-shaped members, the fabric cover including a corresponding plurality of fabric pockets, each of said fabric pockets receiving a U-shaped member for holding the fabric cover in close proximity to the framework as the awning is used.
