Claims
- 1. A retractable stairway assembly for a vehicle having a cab, the cab having a cab side wall with a doorway within which a door is positioned when the door is closed, the retractable stairway assembly comprising:a stairway comprising a plurality of steps; a pivot, the stairway being pivoted to the vehicle by the pivot for pivoting movement about an upright axis between a stowed position and at least one deployed position, wherein when the stairway is in the stowed position the stairway is substantially beneath the cab, wherein when the stairway is in a deployed position, the stairway is exposed from beneath the cab to allow ingress and egress on the steps into and out of the cab and through the doorway when the door is open; an actuator coupled to the vehicle and to the stairway and operable to pivot the stairway between the stowed and deployed positions; an elongated guide member mounted to the vehicle at a location spaced from the pivot, a stairway coupler slidably mounted to the guide member and pivotally coupled to the stairway, the coupler being slidable along the guide member as the stairway is pivoted between the stowed and deployed positions, and wherein the stairway is suspended at least in part from the guide member by the coupler.
- 2. A retractable stairway assembly according to claim 1 wherein the guide member has an elongated straight section which extends at least along the portion of the guide member along which the coupler slides, the straight section having a longitudinal axis, wherein the coupler is pivotal about the longitudinal axis of the straight section as well as slidable along the straight section, the retractable stairway also including a link element pivotally coupling the coupler to the stairway, whereby during stowing and deployment of the stairway, the coupler slides along the straight section, pivots about the longitudinal axis of the straight section and pivots relative to the stairway.
- 3. A retractable stairway according to claim 2 in which the coupler includes a linear bearing slidably coupling the coupler to the straight section and permitting pivoting of the coupler relative to the longitudinal axis of the straight section.
- 4. A retractable stairway according to claim 2 wherein the link element is adjustable in length to thereby adjust the elevation of the stairway relative to the vehicle at the location of the link element.
- 5. A retractable stairway assembly according to claim 1 in which the stairway includes an upper platform having a top surface, front and rear edges and first and second side edges, the platform including a platform reinforcement positioned below the top surface and extending in a direction from the first side edge toward the second side edge, the stairway assembly including a link element extending from the platform reinforcement to the coupler, the link element including a link pivot such that, as the coupler slides along the guide member during deployment and stowing of the stairway, the link element permits the coupler to pivot relative to the platform reinforcement.
- 6. A retractable stairway assembly according to claim 5 wherein the link element is adjustable in length to thereby adjust the elevation of the stairway relative to the vehicle at the location of the link element.
- 7. A retractable stairway assembly according to claim 6 wherein the link element comprises a turnbuckle.
- 8. A retractable stairway assembly according to claim 6 wherein the link element has a first set of threads and a second set of threads, the first set of threads having likehandedness and the second set of threads having a handedness which is opposite to the handedness of the first set of threads, one of the first and second sets of threads being threadedly coupled to the coupler and the other of the first and second sets of threads being threadedly coupled to the platform reinforcement, whereby pivoting the link element in a first direction increases the distance between the coupler and platform at the location of the link element and pivoting the link element in a second direction opposite to the first direction shortens such distance.
- 9. A retractable stairway assembly according to claim 8 in which the link element includes a ball joint connector coupled between the coupler and platform reinforcement.
- 10. A retractable stairway assembly according to claim 2 wherein the platform reinforcement comprises a one-piece elongated member extending transversely across the entire platform from the first side edge to the second side edge.
- 11. A retractable stairway assembly according to claim 1 including an environment shielding cover positioned to shield the guide member from below, the cover defining an elongated slot through which the coupler is coupled to the stairway, the coupler sliding in alignment with the slot as the stairway is deployed and stowed.
- 12. A retractable stairway assembly according to claim 1 including a snubber receiver mounted to the vehicle and a snubber mounted to the stairway, the snubber receiver and snubber being positioned such that the snubber is inserted into the snubber receiver as the stairway is shifted from a partially stowed to a fully stowed position, and wherein the force exerted by the snubber receiver on the snubber increases as the stairway approaches the fully stowed position.
- 13. A retractable stairway assembly according to claim 12 wherein the snubber comprises a projecting flange, the snubber receiver having an inclined flange engaging surface, the flange engaging surface wedging against the snubber flange as the stairway approaches the fully stowed position.
- 14. A retractable stairway assembly according to claim 12 in which the snubber receiver supports a snubber engaging pad which is positioned to engage the snubber as the stairway is shifted from the partially stowed to the fully stowed position.
- 15. A retractable stairway assembly according to claim 12 in which the stairway includes an upper platform with a front edge, the snubber having a base and a snubber flange, the snubber base being mounted to the platform with the snubber flange projecting forwardly of the front edge of the platform, the platform including an upper surface having a slide member coupled thereto, the retractable stairway assembly also including an elongated slide element fixedly carried by the vehicle and positioned to bear against the slide member as the stairway is shifted between stowed and deployed positions with the slide member sliding against and along the fixed slide member during pivotal movement of the stairway.
- 16. A retractable stairway assembly according to claim 15 in which the snubber base is positioned to overlie the top surface of the platform and the slide member is positioned to overlie the snubber base, the slide member having an upper surface and the slide element having a lower surface, the upper surface member of the slide abutting the lower surface of the slide element, and wherein the slide member and snubber are mounted such that the distance between the top surface of the platform and the snubber and slide member top surface is adjustable.
- 17. A retractable stairway assembly according to claim 1 in which the stairway has an upper platform with a top surface, the stairway assembly including an actuator coupler projecting upwardly from the upper surface of the platform, the actuator including an actuator arm which extends and retracts to pivot the stairway between the deployed and stowed positions, the actuator arm extending above the upper surface of the platform overlying the platform at least in part, and being pivotally coupled to the actuator coupler, and the actuator also being pivotally coupled to the vehicle.
- 18. A retractable stairway assembly according to claim 17 in which the actuator comprises an electric motor, the stairway assembly including means for controlling the actuator in response to status conditions of the vehicle to thereby control the deployment and stowing of the stairway.
- 19. A retractable stairway assembly according to claim 1 in which the stairway includes an upper platform with a top surface and a stop projecting upwardly from the top surface in a position to engage the vehicle as the stairway is pivoted to the deployed position.
- 20. A retractable stairway assembly according to claim 1 including a selectively manually actuated mechanical lock, upon actuation, the mechanical lock being adapted to secure the stairway to the vehicle when the stairway is in a stowed position and to prevent deployment of the stairway from the stowed position while the mechanical lock is actuated.
- 21. A retractable stairway assembly according to claim 1 including a latch and latch catch, one of the latch and latch catch being mounted to the stairway and being movable with the stairway, the other of the latch and latch catch being mounted to the vehicle, the latch and latch catch being positioned relative to one another such that as the stairway is stowed the latch and latch catch engage one another and as the stairway is deployed from the stowed position the latch and latch catch are disengaged from one another.
- 22. A retractable stairway assembly according to claim 1 in which the stairway includes a first upright panel having opposed front and back faces, the steps being coupled to and projecting outwardly from the back face of the first panel, the front face of the first panel being substantially aligned with the cab side wall when the stairway is in the stowed position, the stairway also including a second upright panel spaced apart from the first panel, the plurality of steps being mounted to and extending between the first and second panels, the first and second panels each including a respective upper edge portion, a platform extending between the upper edge portions of the first and second panels and being mounted thereto, the first panel including a plurality of spaced-apart foot receiving openings, each of said foot receiving openings being associated with a respective one of the plurality of steps and being positioned such that an individual's foot inserted through the foot receiving opening rests upon the step associated with the opening, a plurality of step cleats, each step cleat being associated with a respective one of the foot receiving openings and projecting outwardly from the first panel in a direction opposite to the step, each of the step cleats having an upper surface at substantially the same elevation as the elevation of the upper surface of the step associated with the foot receiving opening with which the cleat is associated.
- 23. A retractable stairway assembly according to claim 22 wherein the foot receiving openings are of progressively increasing width moving from bottom to top of the first panel.
- 24. A retractable stairway assembly according to claim 23 including an outer trim panel overlying the first panel, the outer trim panel including a plurality of openings aligned with the foot receiving openings through the first panel.
- 25. A retractable stairway assembly according to claim 22 in which the platform comprises upper and lower platform sections, the platform having a longitudinal axis which extends generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle when the stairway is in a fully stowed position, the platform including a plurality of longitudinally extending reinforcing ribs positioned between the first and second platform sections, the platform also including side walls extending about the perimeter of the platform between the first and second sections; the stairway assembly also including a downwardly extending step closing panel extending from the rear edge of the platform and positioned adjacent to the forward edge of each of the steps, a first wheel well element mounted to the underside of the lower platform section, and a second wheel well element mounted to the forward side of the downwardly extending step closing panel.
- 26. A retractable stairway assembly according to claim 1 in which the coupler includes an opening therethrough and wherein the guide member passes through the opening and is encircled by the coupler.
- 27. A retractable stairway assembly for a vehicle having a cab, the cab having a cab side wall with a doorway within which a door is positioned when the door is closed, the retractable stairway assembly comprising:an upright panel having opposed front and back faces; a stairway comprising a plurality of steps with the steps coupled to and projecting from the back face of the panel; a pivot, the stairway being pivoted to the vehicle by the pivot for pivoting movement about an upright axis, the stairway and panel being pivotable between a stowed position and at least one deployed position, wherein when the stairway is in the stowed position the front face of the panel is substantially aligned with the cab side wall and the stairway is behind the panel and substantially beneath the cab with the steps having step surfaces facing upwardly, wherein when the stairway is in the deployed position, the stairway is exposed from beneath the cab to allow ingress and egress on the steps into and out of the cab and through the doorway when the door is opened; an actuator coupled to the vehicle and to the stairway and operable to pivot the stairway between the stowed and deployed positions; the stairway comprising an upper platform with a top surface, the stairway assembly including an actuator coupler projecting upwardly from the upper surface of the platform, the actuator including an actuator arm which extends and retracts to pivotally move the stairway between the stowed and deployed positions, the actuator arm extending above and at least in part overlying the upper surface of the platform and being pivotally coupled to the actuator coupler, and the actuator also being pivotally coupled to the vehicle; an elongated guide member mounted to the vehicle at a location spaced rearwardly of the pivot, a stairway coupler slidably mounted to the guide member and pivotally coupled to the stairway, the coupler including an opening therethrough with the guide member passing through the opening and being encircled by the coupler, the coupler being slidable along the guide member as the stairway is pivoted between the stowed and deployed positions, and wherein the stairway is suspended at least in part from the guide member by the coupler; wherein the guide member has an elongated straight section which extends at least along the portion of the guide member along which the coupler slides, the straight section having a longitudinal axis, wherein the coupler is pivotal about the longitudinal axis of the straight section as well as slidable along the straight section, the retractable stairway also including a link pivotally coupling the coupler to the stairway, whereby during stowing and deployment of the stairway, the coupler slides along the straight section, pivots about the longitudinal axis of the straight section and pivots relative to the stairway; the coupler including a linear bearing slidably coupling the coupler to the straight section and permitting pivoting of the coupler relative to the longitudinal axis of the straight section; the stairway including an upper platform having a top surface, front and rear edges and first and second side edges, the platform including a platform reinforcement positioned below the top surface and extending in a direction from the first side edge toward the second side edge, the link element extending from the platform reinforcement to the coupler, the link element including pivot such that, as the coupler slides along the guide member during deployment and stowing of the stairway, the link element permits the coupler to pivot relative to the platform reinforcement; wherein the link element is adjustable in length to thereby adjust the elevation of the stairway relative to the vehicle at the location of the link; the link element having a first set of threads and a second set of threads, the first set of threads having likehandedness and the second set of threads having a handedness which is opposite to the handedness of the first set of threads, one of the first and second sets of threads being threadedly coupled to the coupler and the other of the first and second sets of threads being threadedly coupled to the platform reinforcement, whereby pivoting the link member in a first direction increases the distance between the coupler and platform at the location of the link member and pivoting the link member in a second direction opposite to the first direction shortens such distance; an environment shielding cover positioned to shield the guide member from below, the cover defining an elongated slot through which the coupler is coupled to the stairway, the coupler sliding in alignment with the slot as the stairway is deployed and stowed; a snubber receiver mounted to the vehicle and a snubber, the snubber having a base and a snubber flange, the snubber base being mounted to the platform with the snubber flange projecting forwardly of the front edge of the platform, the snubber receiver and snubber being positioned such that the snubber flange is inserted into the snubber receiver as the stairway is shifted from a partially stowed to a fully stowed position, the snubber receiver having an inclined flange engaging surface, the flange engaging surface wedging against the snubber flange as the stairway approaches the fully stowed position, wherein the force exerted by the snubber receiver on the snubber increases as the stairway approaches the fully stowed position; a slide pad mounted to the platform and the retractable stairway assembly also sincluding an elongated slide member mounted to the vehicle and positioned to bear against the slide pad as the stairway is pivoted between deployed and stowed positions; the snubber base being positioned to overlie the top surface of the platform and the slide pad being positioned to overlie the snubber base, and wherein the slide pad and snubber are mounted such that the distance between the top surface of the platform and the snubber and slide pad is adjustable; a selectively manually actuated mechanical lock, upon actuation, the mechanical lock being adapted to secure the stairway to the vehicle when the stairway is in a stowed position and to prevent deployment of the stairway from the stowed position while the mechanical lock is actuated; a latch and latch catch, one of the latch and latch catch being mounted to the stairway and being movable with the stairway, the other of the latch and latch catch being mounted to the vehicle, the latch and latch catch being positioned relative to one another such that as the stairway is stowed the latch and latch catch engage one another and as the stairway is deployed from the stowed position the latch and latch catch are disengaged from one another; the upright panel comprising a first panel, the stairway also including a second panel spaced apart from the first panel, the steps being mounted to and extending between the first and second panels, the first and second panels each including a respective upper edge portion, a platform extending between the upper edge portions of the first and second panels and being mounted thereto, the first panel including a plurality of spaced-apart foot receiving openings, each of said foot receiving openings being associated with a respective one of the plurality of steps and being positioned such that an individual's foot inserted through the foot receiving opening rests upon the step associated with the opening, a plurality of step cleats, each step cleat being associated with a respective one of the foot receiving openings and projecting outwardly from the first panel in a direction opposite to the step, each of the step cleats having an upper surface at substantially the same elevation as the elevation of the upper surface of the step associated with the foot receiving opening with which the cleat is associated; wherein the foot receiving openings are of progressively increasing width moving from bottom to top of the first panel; and an outer trim panel overlying the first panel, the outer trim panel including a plurality of openings aligned with the foot receiving openings through the first panel.
