Claims
- 1. A method for displaying hypertext data, the method comprising:displaying a first document represented in a physical markup representation and containing at least one hypertext link; in response to a user input selecting a first hypertext link in the first document, accessing an external document represented in a semantic markup representation, the first hypertext link having an original state pointing to the external document; converting the semantic markup representation of the external document into a physical markup representation; and incorporating the physical markup representation of the external document into the first document.
- 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:modifying the first hypertext link from the original state to a second state having an internal link pointed to the physical markup representation of the external document in the first document.
- 3. The method of claim 2, further comprising:saving information about the original state of the first hypertext link.
- 4. The method of claim 3, further comprising:in response to an action deleting a portion of the first document that included the physical markup representation of the external document, using the information saved about the original state of the first hypertext link to reset the first hypertext link to the original state.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the external document comprises a primary document and one or more auxiliary documents.
- 6. A method for displaying hypertext data, the method comprising:displaying a first document represented in a first markup representation and containing at least one hypertext link; in response to a user input selecting a first hypertext link in the first document, accessing an external document represented in a second markup representation, the first hypertext link having an original state pointing to the external document; converting the second markup representation of the external document into a first markup representation of the external document; incorporating the first markup representation of the external document into the first document; creating a digest of the external document; and using the digest of the external document to determine whether the first markup representation of the external document has already been incorporated into the first document.
- 7. The method of claim 6, wherein using the digest of the external document comprises comparing the digest of the external document to digests of documents previously incorporated into the first document.
- 8. A method for displaying hypertext data, the method comprising:displaying a first document represented in a first markup representation and containing at least one hypertext link; in response to a user input selecting a first hypertext link in the first document, accessing an external document represented in a second markup representation, the first hypertext link having an original state pointing to the external document, wherein the external document comprises a primary document and one or more auxiliary documents; converting the second markup representation of the external document into a first markup representation of the external document; incorporating the first markup representation of the external document into the first document; and creating a digest of each auxiliary document; and using the digest of each auxiliary document to determine whether a first markup representation of the auxiliary document has already been incorporated into the first document.
- 9. A method for displaying hypertext data, the method comprising:displaying a first document represented in a first markup representation and containing at least one hypertext link; in response to a user input selecting a first hypertext link in the first document, accessing an external document represented in a second markup representation, the first hypertext link having an original state pointing to the external document, wherein the external document comprises a primary document and one or more auxiliary documents, wherein one or more auxiliary documents are image documents; converting the second markup representation of the external document into a first markup representation of the external document; incorporating the first markup representation of the external document into the first document; determining if a URL for the one or more auxiliary documents refers to a document that has already been incorporated into the first document; and if a URL for an auxiliary document refers to a document already incorporated into the first document, then retrieving from the first document an indirect object reference to the corresponding document.
- 10. A method for displaying hypertext data, the method comprising:displaying a first document represented in a first markup representation and containing at least one hypertext link; in response to a user input selecting a first hypertext link in the first document, accessing an external document represented in a second markup representation, the first hypertext link having an original state pointing to the external document, wherein the external document comprises a primary document and one or more auxiliary documents; converting the second markup representation of the external document into a first markup representation of the external document; incorporating the first markup representation of the external document into the first document; creating a digest of each auxiliary document; and using the digest of each auxiliary document to determine whether a first markup representation of the external document has already been incorporated into the first document.
- 11. A method for displaying hypertext data, the method comprising:displaying a first document represented in a first markup representation and containing at least one hypertext link; in response to a user input selecting a first hypertext link in the first document, accessing an external document represented in a second markup representation, the first hypertext link having an original state pointing to the external document, wherein the external document comprises a primary document and one or more auxiliary documents; converting the second markup representation of the external document into a first markup representation of the external document; incorporating the first markup representation of the external document into the first document; creating a digest of each auxiliary document; creating a composite digest of the primary document, the composite digest being a digest of a concatenation of the digests of each auxiliary digest and the contents of the primary document; and using the composite digest to determine whether a first markup representation of the external document has already been incorporated into the first document.
- 12. A method for displaying hypertext data, the method comprising:displaying a first document represented in a first markup representation and containing at least one hypertext link; in response to a user input selecting a first hypertext link in the first document, accessing an external document represented in a second markup representation, the first hypertext link having an original state pointing to the external document; converting the second markup representation of the external document into a first markup representation of the external document; creating a digest of the external document; using the digest of the external document to determine whether the first markup representation of the external document has already been incorporated into the first document; if the first markup representation of the external document has not already been incorporated into the first document, then incorporating the first markup representation of the external document into the first document.
- 13. A computer program product, tangibly stored on a machine-readable medium, comprising instructions operable to cause a programmable processor to:display a first document represented in a physical markup representation and containing at least one hypertext link; in response to a user input selecting a first hypertext link, access an external document represented in a semantic markup representation, the first hypertext link having an original state pointing to the external document; convert the semantic markup representation of the external document into a physical markup representation; and incorporate the physical markup representation of the external document into the first document.
- 14. The computer program product of claim 13, further comprising instructions to:modify the first hypertext link from the original state to a second state having an internal link pointed to the physical markup representation of the external document in the first document.
- 15. The computer program product of claim 14, further comprising instructions to:save information about the original state of the first hypertext link.
- 16. The computer program product of claim 15, further comprising instructions to:in response to an action deleting a portion of the first document that included the physical markup representation of the external document, use the information saved about the original state of the first hypertext link to reset the first hypertext link from an internal link that pointed to the deleted portion to the original state.
- 17. The computer program product of claim 13, wherein the external document comprises a primary document and one or more auxiliary documents.
- 18. The computer program product of claim 17, wherein one or more auxiliary documents are image documents, further comprising instructions to:determine if a URL for the one or more auxiliary documents refers to a document that has already been incorporated into the first document; and if a URL for an auxiliary document refers to a document already incorporated into the first document, then retrieve from the first document an indirect object reference to the corresponding document.
- 19. The computer program product of claim 17, further comprising instructions to:create a digest for each auxiliary document; and use the digest for each auxiliary document to determine whether the physical markup representation of the external document has already been incorporated into the first document.
- 20. A computer program product, tangibly stored on a machine-readable medium, comprising instructions operable to cause a programmable processor to:display a first document represented in a first markup representation and containing at least one hypertext link; in response to a user input selecting a first hypertext link, access an external document represented in a second markup representation, the first hypertext link having an original state pointing to the external document; convert the second markup representation of the external document into a first markup representation of the external document; incorporate the first markup representation of the external document into the first document; create a digest of the external document; and use the digest of the external document to determine whether the first markup representation of the external document has already been incorporated into the first document.
- 21. A computer program product, tangibly stored on a machine-readable medium, comprising instructions operable to cause a programmable processor to:display a first document represented in a first markup representation and containing at least one hypertext link; in response to a user input selecting a first hypertext link, access an external document represented in a second markup representation, the first hypertext link having an original state pointing to the external document, wherein the external document comprises a primary document and one or more auxiliary documents; convert the second markup representation of the external document into a first markup representation of the external document; incorporate the first markup representation of the external document into the first document; create a digest for each auxiliary document; and use the digest for each auxiliary document to determine whether the first markup representation of the auxiliary document has already been incorporated into the first document.
- 22. A computer program product, tangibly stored on a machine-readable medium, comprising instructions operable to cause a programmable processor to:display a first document represented in a first markup representation and containing at least one hypertext link; in response to a user input selecting a first hypertext link, access an external document represented in a second markup representation, the first hypertext link having an original state pointing to the external document, wherein the external document comprises a primary document and one or more auxiliary documents; convert the second markup representation of the external document into a first markup representation of the external document; incorporate the first markup representation of the external document into the first document; create a digest for each auxiliary document; create a composite digest of the primary document, the composite digest being a digest of a concatenation of the digests for each auxiliary digest and the contents of the primary document; and use the composite digest to determine whether a first markup representation of the external document has already been incorporated into the first document.
- 23. A computer program product, tangibly stored on a machine-readable medium, comprising instructions operable to cause a programmable processor to:display a first document represented in a first markup representation and containing at least one hypertext link; in response to a user input selecting a first hypertext link in the first document, access an external document represented in a second markup representation, the first hypertext link having an original state pointing to the external document; convert the second markup representation of the external document into a first markup representation of the external document; create a digest of the external document; use the digest of the external document to determine whether the first markup representation of the external document has already been incorporated into the first document; if the first markup representation of the external document has not already been incorporated into the first document, then incorporate the first markup representation of the external document into the first document.
