Claims
- 1. A reusable oil filter for mounting on an engine having a filtered oil tube and an unfiltered oil port, the reusable fluid filter comprising:
- (a) a one-piece cylindrical canister having an inner wall and a central axis, a closed end and an open end;
- (b) a body having an inside face and an outside face, the body adapted to sealingly close the open end of the canister
- (c) a cylindrical, reusable filter comprising a woven mesh, the filter on the body, the filter extending into the canister defining an unfiltered fluid compartment and a filtered fluid compartment, the unfiltered fluid compartment between the filter and the inner wall of the canister, the filtered fluid compartment separated from the unfiltered fluid compartment by the filter;
- (d) an oil inlet in the body in fluid communication with the unfiltered oil port in the engine and the unfiltered fluid compartment;
- (e) wherein said oil inlet includes a central axis, wherein a plane coincident with the central axis of said inlet intersects the central axis of said canister at a point exteriorly of and adjacent to the outside face of said body to form a first acute interior angle therewith, and wherein a plane coincident with the central axis of said inlet and parallel to the central axis of said canister forms a second acute interior angle with a plane that is tangent to a cylindrical reference surface coaxially surrounding the central axis of said canister and intersecting the central axis of said inlet port at said outside face, whereby said oil inlet causes a swirling fluid motion in the unfiltered fluid compartment around the filter;
- (f) an outlet in the body extending from the filtered fluid compartment to the filtered oil tube; and
- (g) a contaminant trap space in the closed end of the canister; wherein the filter comprises a plurality of cleanable cylindrical filter screens, an inner filter screen surrounding the follow core, the inner filter screen having a plurality of filter mesh openings of a predetermined size, an outer filter screen having filter mesh openings which are larger than the inner filter screen, to thereby provide a multistage filter element for progressively filtering contaminants of increasingly smaller size from the fluid as it passes from the unfiltered fluid compartment to the hollow core.
- 2. The invention of claim 1, the woven mesh further comprising a plurality of warp wires extending substantially parallel to the axis of the canister, the warp wires having a size.
- 3. The invention of claim 2, the woven mesh further comprising a plurality of shute wires woven in a substantially perpendicular relationship with the warp wires to define a plurality of filter openings in the filter element for allowing oil to pass through the filter element, the filter openings having a size smaller than a predetermined contaminant particle in the oil.
- 4. The invention of claim 3 wherein the filter openings further comprise an elongated shape to resist lodging one or more contaminant particles in one of the plurality of filter openings.
- 5. The invention of claim 1 further comprising a plate in the canister between the unfiltered fluid compartment and the contaminant trap to reduce the turbulent swirling of fluid in the contaminant trap, the plate having openings between the trap and the unfiltered fluid chamber to permit contaminant particles in the oil to settle into the trap and to reduce the turbulence of fluid in the trap to retain contaminant particles in the trap.
- 6. The invention of claim 5 wherein the filter element is supported between the plate and the body.
- 7. The invention of claim 1 further comprising an adapter ring threadably connected to the outlet in the body, internal threads on the adapter ring for threadably connecting to the engine.
- 8. The invention of claim 1 further comprising a deflectable anti-siphon valve on the body extending over the inlet.
- 9. The invention of claim 8 wherein the anti-siphon valve comprises a baffle on the body extending over the inside face.
- 10. The invention of claim 1 further comprising a nipple on the filter proximate to the body, the nipple in fluid communication with the filtered fluid compartment, the nipple extending into and engaging the outlet to connect the filter to the body.
- 11. A reusable oil filter for mounting on an engine having a filter oil tube for receiving filtered oil and an unfiltered fluid port for directing oil from the engine to the reusable oil filter, the reusable oil filter comprising:
- (a) a one-piece cylindrical canister having an inner wall and a central axis, a closed end and an open end;
- (b) a body having an inside face and an outside face, the body adapted to sealingly close the open end of the canister having the inside face in the canister;
- (c) a cylindrical reusable filter comprising a woven mesh, the filter removably attached to the body and extending into the canister defining an unfiltered fluid compartment between the filter and the inner wall of the canister and a filtered fluid compartment, the woven mesh having a plurality of filter openings, each filter opening having a nonrectangular shape;
- (d) an inlet in the body extending from the outside face to the unfiltered oil compartment, wherein said oil inlet includes a central axis, wherein a plane coincident with the central axis of said inlet intersects the central axis of said canister at a point exteriorly of and adjacent to the outside face of said body to form a first acute interior angle therewith, and wherein a plane coincident with the central axis of said inlet and parallel to the central axis of said canister forms a second acute interior angle with a plane that is tangent to a cylindrical reference surface coaxially surrounding the central axis of said canister and intersecting the central axis of said inlet port at said outside face, whereby said oil inlet causes a swirling fluid motion in the unfiltered fluid compartment around the filter;
- (e) an outlet in the body extending from the inside face to the outside face and in communication with the filtered fluid compartment and the filtered oil tube; and
- (f) a contaminant trap space in the closed end of the canister; wherein the filter comprises a plurality of cleanable cylindrical filter screens, an inner filter screen surrounding the hollow core and attached to the filter sleeve, the inner filter screen having a plurality of filter mesh openings of a predetermined size, an outer filter screen having filter mesh openings which are larger than the inner filter screen, to thereby provide a multistage filter element for progressively filtering contaminants of increasingly smaller size from the fluid as it passes from the unfiltered fluid compartment to the hollow core.
- 12. The invention of claim 11 further comprising a plate between the contaminant trap and the unfiltered fluid compartment having openings extending from the unfiltered fluid compartment into the contaminant trap to allow particles to enter the trap and reduce turbulence and swirling of oil in the contaminant trap.
- 13. The invention of claim 11, the woven mesh further comprising a plurality of warp wires extending in a substantially parallel relationship to the axis of the canister, a plurality of shute wires woven in a substantially perpendicular relationship with the warp wires.
- 14. The invention of claim 11 further comprising a filter element top on the filter, the filter element top having a nipple extending into the outlet, a cap O-ring mounted in the outlet and bearing against the nipple to sealingly connect the filter to the body.
- 15. A method of filtering particles from oil comprising:
- (a) mounting a filter in a cylindrical canister having a central axis and forming an unfiltered fluid compartment between the canister and the filter;
- (b) providing a body having an inside face and an outside face for closing an open end of the canister with the inside face in the canister, providing an inlet in the body extending from the outside face to the unfiltered oil compartment, wherein said oil inlet includes a central axis, wherein a plane coincident with the central axis of said inlet intersects the central axis of said canister at a point exteriorly of and adjacent to the outside face of said body to form a first acute interior angle therewith, and wherein a plane coincident with the central axis of said inlet and parallel to the central axis of said canister forms a second acute interior angle with a plane that is tangent to a cylindrical reference surface coaxially surrounding the central axis of said canister and intersecting the central axis of said inlet port at said outside face, and directing oil into the unfiltered fluid compartment through said inlet;
- (c) swirling the fluid around the filter to urge particles to remain suspended in the oil;
- (d) allowing particles to enter a contaminant trap space; and
- (e) separating the contaminant trap space from the unfiltered fluid compartment for reducing swirling and retaining particles in the contaminant trap space.
- 16. A reusable oil filter for mounting on an engine having a filtered oil tube and an unfiltered oil port, the reusable fluid filter comprising:
- (a) a one-piece cylindrical canister having an inner wall and a central axis, a closed end and an open end;
- (b) a body having an inside face and an outside face, the body adapted to sealingly close the open end of the canister;
- (c) a cylindrical, reusable filter comprising a woven mesh, the filter on the body, the filter extending into the canister defining an unfiltered fluid compartment and a filtered fluid compartment, the unfiltered fluid compartment between the filter and the inner wall of the canister, the filtered fluid compartment separated from the unfiltered fluid compartment by the filter;
- (d) an outlet in the body coaxially aligned with the central axis, extending from the filtered fluid compartment to the filtered oil tube;
- (e) an inlet in the body extending from the outside face to the unfiltered oil compartment, wherein said oil inlet includes a central axis, wherein a plane coincident with the central axis of said inlet intersects the central axis of said canister at a point exteriorly of and adjacent to the outside face of said body to form a first acute interior angle of about sixty degrees therewith, and wherein a plane coincident with the central axis of said inlet and parallel to the central axis of said canister forms a second acute interior angle of about sixty degrees with a plane that is tangent to a cylindrical reference surface coaxially surrounding the central axis of said canister and intersecting the central axis of said inlet port at said outside face, whereby said oil inlet causes a swirling fluid motion in the unfiltered fluid compartment around the filter; and,
- (f) a contaminant trap in the closed end of the canister.
- 17. A reusable oil filter for mounting on an engine having a filter oil tube for receiving filtered oil and an unfiltered fluid port for directing oil from the engine to the reusable oil filter, the reusable oil filter comprising:
- (a) a one-piece cylindrical canister having an inner wall and a central axis, a closed end and an open end;
- (b) a body having an inside face and an outside face, the body adapted to sealingly close the open end of the canister having the inside face in the canister;
- (c) a cylindrical reusable filter comprising a woven mesh, the filter removably attached to the body and extending into the canister defining an unfiltered fluid compartment between the filter and the inner wall of the canister and a filtered fluid compartment, the woven mesh having a plurality of filter openings, each filter opening having a nonrectangular shape along a tangent to the filter;
- (d) an outlet in the body, coaxially aligned with the central axis, extending from the inside face to the outside face and in communication with the filtered fluid compartment and the filtered oil tube;
- (e) an inlet in the body extending from the outside face to the unfiltered oil compartment, wherein said oil inlet includes a central axis, wherein a plane coincident with the central axis of said inlet intersects the central axis of said canister at a point exteriorly of and adjacent to the outside face of said body to form a first acute interior angle of about sixty degrees therewith, and wherein a plane coincident with the central axis of said inlet and parallel to the central axis of said canister forms a second acute interior angle of about sixty degrees with a plane that is tangent to a cylindrical reference surface coaxially surrounding the central axis of said canister and intersecting the central axis of said inlet port at said outside face, whereby said oil inlet causes a swirling fluid motion in the unfiltered fluid compartment around the filter; and,
- (f) a contaminant trap in the closed end of the canister.
- 18. A reusable fluid filter comprising:
- (a) a canister, the canister having an outer wall, an inner wall, a central axis, a closed end, and an open end a support plate in the closed end;
- (b) a reusable filter element removably mounted in the canister, the filter element having two ends, an outside wall and an inside wall defining a hollow core, a filter element top on one end of the filter element having a fluid exit opening adjacent the hollow core, the filter element sealingly mounted on the support plate whereby the support plate supports the filter element in the canister; and
- (c) an adapter body, the adapter body having an inside face and an outside face, a sealing means attaching the canister to the inside face of the adapter body, a fluid outlet aperture extending through the adapter body, the filter element fluid outlet sealingly attached to the adapter body, an unfiltered fluid compartment defined between the outside wall of the filter element and the inner wall of the canister, a plurality of fluid inlet orifices in the body extending from the outside face to the unfiltered oil compartment, wherein each said oil inlet orifice includes a respective central axis, wherein a plane coincident with the central axis of a respective said inlet orifice intersects the central axis of said canister at a point exteriorly of and adjacent to the outside face of said body to form a first acute interior angle therewith, and wherein a plane coincident with the central axis of a respective said inlet orifice and parallel to the central axis of said canister forms a second acute interior angle with a plane that is tangent to a cylindrical reference surface coaxially surrounding the central axis of said canister and intersecting the central axis of the respective said inlet port at said outside face, whereby said oil inlet causes a swirling fluid motion in the unfiltered fluid compartment around the filter.
