Claims
- 1. A container comprising:
- a generally rectangular bottom:
- generally rectangular opposed first and second side and end walls extending upwardly from the bottom;
- a pivot member on an upper edge of the first side wall;
- a lid comprising first and second panels, each panel having first and second side edges and a hinge edge, the first side edges detachably and pivotally secured to the pivot member; and
- a hinge extending along the hinge edges of each of the first and second panels to operatively connect the first and second panels.
- 2. A container in accordance with claim 1 wherein the hinge comprises at least one pivot pin formed along the hinge edge of the first panel and at least one pin housing formed along the hinge edge of the second panel, each pin housing adapted to receive a corresponding pivot pin to operably connect the first and second panels.
- 3. A container in accordance with claim 1 wherein the pivot member comprises a pair of pivot pins fixedly secured to the first side wall.
- 4. A container in accordance with claim 3 wherein the pivot member further comprises a plurality of legs spaced along and interconnecting the pivot pins and the first side wall.
- 5. A container in accordance with claim 3 further comprising a plurality of fingers formed on the first side edges to detachably and pivotally secure the lid to the pivot pins.
- 6. A container in accordance with claim 1, further comprising a plurality of engaging members on the first and second panels of the lid proximate the first side edges.
- 7. A container in accordance with claim 6, wherein the engaging members each comprise a projection extending outwardly from one of the first side edges.
- 8. A container in accordance with claim 6, further comprising a plurality of engaged members on the pivot member, the engaged members cooperating with the engaging members to prevent detachment of the lid from the container while the lid is in a closed position and while the lid is in an open position less than approximately 180.degree. from its closed position.
- 9. A container in accordance with claim 8, wherein the engaged members each comprise a recess formed on the pivot member.
- 10. A container in accordance with claim 1 wherein the pivot member is formed of one-piece construction with the first side wall.
- 11. A container in accordance with claim 1 further comprising a fastener on at least one of the second side edges and a shoulder on the second side wall, the fastener adapted to releasably engage the shoulder when the lid of the container is in a closed position.
- 12. A container in accordance with claim 11 wherein the fastener comprises at least one resilient flange.
- 13. A container in accordance with claim 12, wherein the at least one resilient flange comprises a first portion extending downwardly from one of the second side edges, and a second portion having an exterior surface angled inwardly and upwardly from the first portion and terminating in a lip.
- 14. A container in accordance with claim 13, wherein the shoulder is angled downwardly and outwardly from the second side wall.
- 15. A container in accordance with claim 14, wherein the flange and the shoulder overlap one another when the lid is proximate the container in a closed position.
- 16. A container in accordance with claim 1, wherein the first side edges are pivotally secured to the pivot member from a point where the lid is in a closed position to a point approximately 180.degree. from its closed position, at which point the lid is detachable from the pivot member.
- 17. A container in accordance with claim 1 further comprising a plurality of supports extending along upper portions of the side and end walls, wherein the end walls and side walls are tapered upwardly and outwardly from the bottom and a space is formed between an upper surface of the bottom of the container and a lower surface of the bottom of a second container when the second container is nested within the container by engagement of the supports of the second container with upper surfaces of the side and end walls of the container.
- 18. A container in accordance with claim 17 wherein the container and the second container are nested in a ratio of about 4 to 1.
- 19. A container in accordance with claim 1 wherein corners formed by the intersection of the end and side walls are substantially rounded.
- 20. A container in accordance with claim 1 further comprising:
- at least one foot formed on a lower surface of the bottom; and
- at least one recess formed in an upper surface of the lid, the recess adapted to receive the at least one foot of a second container stacked upon the container when the lid of the container is closed.
- 21. A container in accordance with claim 1 further comprising at least one tab projecting from the hinge edge of at least one of the panels, and at least one recess formed on at least the other of the two panels, each tab extending beyond the hinge edge of the other of the two panels when the two panels are operatively connected to engage a corresponding recess and prevent rotation of the hinge in one direction beyond a point where the two panels of the lid are in substantially the same plane.
- 22. A container in accordance with claim 1 further comprising an apron formed along the side and end edges of the lid, the apron having a double wall construction.
- 23. A container in accordance with claim 1 wherein a plurality of apertures is formed in at least one of the bottom, the lid, the end walls, the side walls, and corners formed by the intersection of the side and end walls to ventilate the container.
- 24. A container comprising
- a generally rectangular bottom:
- generally rectangular opposed first and second side and end walls extending upwardly from the bottom;
- a pivot member on an upper edge of the first side wall;
- a lid comprising first and second panels, the lid having first and second side edges, the first side edges detachably and pivotally secured to the pivot member;
- a hinge extending from the first side edge to the second side edge of the lid to operatively connect the two panels of the lid;
- a shoulder on an upper edge of the second side wall; and
- a fastener on at least one of the second side edges, the fastener formed to releasably engage the shoulder.
- 25. A container in accordance with claim 24 wherein the hinge comprises at least one pivot pin formed along a hinge edge of the first panel and at least one pin housing formed along a hinge edge of the second panel, each pin housing adapted to receive a corresponding pivot pin to operatively connect the first and second panels.
- 26. A container in accordance with claim 24 wherein the pivot member comprises a pair of pivot pins fixedly secured to the first side wall.
- 27. A container in accordance with claim 24 further comprising a plurality of fingers formed on the first side edges to detachably and pivotally secure the lid to the pivot member.
- 28. A container in accordance with claim 24, further comprising a plurality of engaging members on the lid proximate the first side edges.
- 29. A container in accordance with claim 28, wherein the engaging members each comprise a projection extending outwardly from one of the first side edges.
- 30. A container in accordance with claim 28, further comprising a plurality of engaged members on the pivot member, the engaged members cooperating with the engaging members to prevent detachment of the lid from the container while the lid is in a closed position and while the lid is in an open position less than approximately 180.degree. from its closed position.
- 31. A container in accordance with claim 30, wherein the engaged members each comprise a recess formed on the pivot member.
- 32. A container in accordance with claim 24, wherein the first side edges are pivotally secured to the pivot member from a point where the lid is in a closed position to a point approximately 180.degree. from its closed position, at which point the lid is detachable from the pivot member.
- 33. A method of nesting a plurality of containers one within another, each container comprising a generally rectangular bottom, generally rectangular opposed first and second side and end walls extending upwardly and outwardly from the bottom such that another container can be nested within the container leaving a space between an upper surface of the bottom of the container and a lower surface of the bottom of the another container, a pivot member on an upper edge of the first side wall, a lid comprised of two panels, each panel having first and second side edges, the first side edges detachably and pivotally secured to the pivot member, and a hinge extending from the first side edge to the second side edge of the lid to operatively connect the two panels of the lid, the method comprising the steps of:
- detaching a lid from a container;
- folding the lid 180.degree. about its hinge;
- holding the lid such that the planes of upper and lower surfaces of the lid are substantially parallel to the plane of the surface of the bottom;
- rotating the lid 90.degree. in the planes of its upper and lower surfaces;
- placing the lid on the bottom of the container;
- nesting another container within the container; and
- repeating each of these steps for each of the plurality of containers.
- 34. A lid for use with a container for housing produce, the container having a generally rectangular bottom, generally rectangular opposed first and second side and end walls extending upwardly from the bottom, and a pivot member on an upper edge of the first side wall, the lid comprising in combination:
- first and second panels, each panel having first and second side edges and a hinge edge, the first side edges detachably and pivotally secured to the pivot member; and
- a hinge extending along the hinge edges of each of the first and second panels to operatively connect the first and second panels.
- 35. A lid in accordance with claim 34 wherein the hinge comprises at least one pivot pin formed along the hinge edge of the first panel and at least one pin housing formed along the hinge edge of the second panel, each pin housing adapted to receive a corresponding pivot pin to operatively connect the first and second panels.
- 36. A lid in accordance with claim 34 further comprising a fastener on at least one of the second side edges adapted to releasably engage the second side wall of the container when the lid of the container is in a closed position.
- 37. A lid in accordance with claim 36 wherein the fastener comprises at least one resilient flange.
- 38. A lid in accordance with claim 34 further comprising at least one tab projecting from the hinge edge of at least one of the panels, and at least one recess formed on at least the other of the two panels, each tab extending beyond the hinge edge of the other of the two panels when the two panels are operatively connected to engage a corresponding recess and prevent rotation of the hinge in one direction beyond a point where the two panels of the lid are in substantially the same plane.
- 39. A lid in accordance with claim 34 further comprising a plurality of fingers formed on the first side edges to detachably and pivotally secure the lid to the pivot member.
