Claims
- 1. A label applicator of the type for separating labels from a continuous carrier strip and applying the labels to an object positioned at the applicator, the applicator, comprising:a frame; a supply roll operably mounted to the frame for supplying the carrier strip having the labels thereon; means for removing the labels from the carrier strip; a rewind roll operably mounted to the frame for rewinding the carrier strip after the labels have been removed therefrom, the supply and rewind rolls configured to move the carrier strip through the applicator; and a rewind assembly having a motor, a pivoting arm and a sensing assembly cooperating with the pivoting arm, the sensing assembly adapted to sense the presence or absence of a sensed element as the pivoting arm moves from a first home position to a position other than the home position, the sensing assembly operably connected to the rewind roll motor to actuate the motor upon movement of the arm away from the home position, and wherein the sensing assembly includes a magnet sensor and the sensed element is a magnet.
- 2. The label applicator in accordance with claim 1 wherein the motor is a servomotor.
- 3. The label applicator in accordance with claim 1 including a biasing element for biasing the pivoting arm toward the home position.
- 4. The label applicator in accordance with claim 3 including an arm stop for engaging the pivoting arm and defining the home position.
- 5. The label applicator in accordance with claim 1 wherein the sensing element is mounted to the frame.
- 6. The label applicator in accordance with claim 1 wherein the rewind roller motor drives the rewind roll at a variable speed and wherein a speed at which the rewind roller motor drives the rewind roller is dependent upon a change in a distance the pivoting arm is located from the home position.
- 7. The label applicator in accordance with claim 6 wherein the rewind roller motor drives the rewind roller at a higher speed with an increase in the distance the pivoting arm is located from the home position.
- 8. A label applicator of the type for separating labels from a continuous carrier strip and applying the labels to an object positioned at the applicator, the applicator, comprising:a frame; a supply roll operably mounted to the frame for supplying the carrier strip having the labels thereon; means for removing the labels from the carrier strip; a rewind roll operably mounted to the frame for rewinding the carrier strip after the labels have been removed therefrom, the supply and rewind rolls configured to move the carrier strip through the applicator; and a rewind assembly having a motor, a pivoting arm and a sensing assembly cooperating with the pivoting arm, the sensing assembly including a sensing element adapted to sense the presence or absence of a sensed element as the pivoting arm moves from a first home position to a position other than the home position, the sensing assembly operably connected to the rewind roll motor to actuate the motor upon movement of the arm away from the home position, wherein the sensed element is mounted to the pivoting arm.
- 9. A label applicator of the type for separating labels from a continuous carrier strip and applying the labels to an object positioned at the applicator, the applicator, comprising:a frame; a supply roll operably mounted to the frame for supplying the carrier strip having the labels thereon; means for removing the labels from the carrier strip; a rewind roll operably mounted to the frame for rewinding the carrier strip after the labels have been removed therefrom, the supply and rewind rolls configured to move the carrier strip through the applicator; and a rewind assembly having a motor, a pivoting arm and a sensing assembly cooperating with the pivoting arm, the sensing assembly adapted to sense the presence or absence of a sensed element as the pivoting arm moves from a first home position to a position other than the home position, the sensing assembly operably connected to the rewind roll motor to actuate the motor upon movement of the arm away from the home position, wherein the pivoting arm is pivotally mounted at a first end to the frame proximal to the rewind roll and includes a guide at a second end and wherein the sensed element is mounted to the arm intermediate the first and second ends.
- 10. The label applicator in accordance with claim 9 wherein the guide is a roller.
- 11. A label applicator of the type for separating labels from a continuous carrier strip and applying the labels to an object positioned at the applicator, the applicator, comprising:a frame; a supply roll operably mounted to the frame for supplying the carrier strip having the labels thereon; means for removing the labels from the carrier strip; a tamp pad for receiving a label and carrying the label to the object; a rewind roll operably mourned to the frame for rewinding the carrier strip after the labels have been removed therefrom, the supply and rewind rolls configured to move the carrier strip through the applicator; a controller; and a rewind assembly having a variable speed servomotor, a biased pivoting arm and a sensing assembly cooperating with the pivoting arm, the sensing assembly including a sensing element mounted to the frame and a sensed element mounted to the pivoting arm, the sensing element adapted to sense the presence or absence of the sensed element as the pivoting arm moves from a first home position to a position other than the home position, the pivoting arm being biased toward the home position, the sensing element operably connected to the controller, the controller being configured to generate a signal to the rewind roll motor to actuate the motor upon movement of the arm away from the home position, the rewind roller motor driving the rewind roll at a variable speed, wherein a speed at which the rewind roller motor drives the rewind roller is dependent upon a change in a distance the pivoting arm is located from the home position.
- 12. The label applicator in accordance with claim 11 wherein the rewind roller motor drives the rewind roller at a higher speed with an increase in the distance the pivoting arm is located from the home position.
- 13. The label applicator in accordance with claim 11 wherein the sensing element is a magnet sensor and the sensed element is a magnet.
- 14. The label applicator in accordance with claim 11 wherein the pivoting arm includes a roller at an end of the arm for guiding the carrier strip.
- 15. A rewind control and drive system for a label applicator of the type for separating labels from a continuous carrier strip and applying the labels to an object positioned at the applicator, the applicator having a frame, a supply roll operably mounted to the frame for supplying the carrier strip having the labels thereon, a separator for removing the labels from the carrier strip and a tamp pad for receiving a label and carrying the label to the object, the control and drive system comprising:a rewind roll operably mounted to the frame for rewinding the carrier strip after the labels have been removed therefrom, the supply and rewind rolls configured to move the carrier strip through the applicator; a controller; and a rewind assembly having a variable speed servomotor, a biased pivoting arm and a sensing assembly cooperating with the pivoting arm, the sensing assembly including a sensing element mounted to the frame and a sensed element mounted to the pivoting arm, the sensing element adapted to sense the presence or absence of the sensed element as the pivoting arm moves from a first home position to a position other than the home position, the pivoting arm being biased toward the home position, the sensing element operably connected to the controller, the controller being configured to generate a signal to the rewind roll motor to actuate the motor upon movement of the arm away from the home position, the rewind roller motor driving the rewind roll at a variable speed, wherein a speed at which the rewind roller motor drives the rewind roller is dependent upon a change in a distance the dancer arm is located from the home position.
- 16. The rewind control and drive system in accordance with claim 15 wherein the rewind roller motor drives the rewind roller at a higher speed with an increase in the distance the dancer arm is located from the home position.
- 17. The rewind control and drive system in accordance with claim 15 wherein the sensing element is a magnet sensor and the sensed element is a magnet.
- 18. The rewind control and drive system in accordance with claim 15 wherein the pivoting arm includes a roller at an end of the arm for guiding the carrier strip.
