Claims
- 1. An automatic rewinding machine for receiving a web material for winding on cores to form logs, said web material being in continuous motion and having spaced apart lines of perforations, the machine comprising a web material feeder by which said web material is moved, a winding cradle constructed and arranged to contact a log during at least a portion of the winding of the web material on a core, a core inserter, and a movable web material separator which periodically pinches said web material between said web material separator and said web material feeder when a peripheral speed of said web material separator is lower than a speed at which the web material is moving to thereby cause said web material to separate along a line of said lines of perforations at a point in the web material located between a newly inserted core and a nearly completed log.
- 2. An automatic rewinding machine for receiving a web material in continuous motion and for winding the web material on cores to form logs, the machine comprising a web material feeder by which said web material is moved, a winding cradle constructed and arranged to contact a log during at least a portion of the winding of the web material on a core, a core inserter, and a movable web material separator which periodically pinches said web material between said web material separator and said web material feeder when a peripheral speed of said web material separator is lower than a speed at which the web material is moving to thereby cause said web material to separate at a point in the web material located between a newly inserted core and a nearly completed log.
- 3. An automatic rewinding machine for receiving a web material for winding on cores to form logs, said web material being in continuous motion and having spaced apart lines of perforations, the machine comprising a first winding roller around which said web material is moved; a second winding roller; and a third winding roller; said first winding roller, said second winding roller and said third winding roller positioned for simultaneously contacting a log during at least a portion of the winding of the web material on a core; a core inserter; and a movable web material separator which periodically pinches said web material between said web material separator and said first winding roller when a peripheral speed of said web material separator and a speed at which the web material is moving are different, to thereby cause said web material to separate along a line of said lines of perforations at a point in said web material located between a newly inserted core and a nearly completed log.
- 4. An automatic rewinding machine for receiving a web material in continuous motion and for winding the web material on cores to form logs, the machine comprising a web material feeder by which said web material is moved, a winding cradle constructed and arranged to contact a log during at least a portion of the winding of the web material on a core, a core inserter, and a movable web material separator which periodically pinches said web material between said web material separator and said web material feeder when a peripheral speed of said web material separator and a speed at which the web material is moving are different, to thereby cause said web material to separate at a point in the web material located between a newly inserted core and a nearly completed log.
- 5. An automatic rewinding machine for receiving a web material for winding the web material on cores to form logs, said web material being in continuous motion at a web feeding speed and having spaced apart lines of perforations, the machine comprising a web material feeder, a winding cradle constructed and arranged to contact a log during at least a portion of the winding of the web material on a core, a core inserter, and a movable web material separator, said web material separator moving at a speed lower than said web feeding speed and said web material separator periodically pushing the web material toward said web material feeder to impede movement of said web material and cause said web material to separate along a line of said lines of perforations at a point in said web material located between said web material separator and a nearly completed log.
- 6. An automatic rewinding machine for receiving a web material in continuous motion at a web feeding speed and for winding the web material on cores to form logs, the machine comprising a web material feeder, a winding cradle constructed and arranged to contact a log during at least a portion of the winding of the web material on a core, a core inserter, and a movable web material separator, said web material separator moving at a speed lower than said web feeding speed and said web material separator periodically pushing the web material towards said web material feeder to impede movement of said web material and cause said web material to separate at a point in said web material located between said web material separator and a nearly completed log.
- 7. The automatic rewinding machine of claim 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 further comprising a core introduction surface on which a new core is introduced.
- 8. The automatic rewinding machine of claim 3 further comprising a core introduction surface on which a new core is introduced, said core introduction surface being curved and extending from a point where a new core is released by said core inserter to a nip formed between said first winding roller and said second winding roller.
- 9. The automatic rewinding machine of claim 7 wherein said core introduction surface comprises a plurality of strips.
- 10. The automatic rewinding machine of claim 8 wherein said core introduction surfaced comprises a plurality of strips.
- 11. The automatic rewinding machine of claim 7 wherein said core introduction surface is spaced apart from said web material feeder a distance which is less than an outside diameter of a new core.
- 12. An automatic rewinding machine for forming logs of web material wound on cores, said web material having spaced apart lines of perforations, the machine comprising a web material feeder, a winding cradle, core inserter, and a web material separator positioned to operate between a point of release of a new core and a position of a nearly completed log, said web material separator periodically pinching said web material between said web material separator and said web material feeder when a peripheral speed of said web material separator is less than a speed at which the web material is moving to thereby cause said web material to separate along a line of said lines of perforations at a point in said web material located between said web material separator and said nearly completed log, and a core introduction surface on which said new core is introduced comprising a plurality of strips, said web material separator comprising a plurality of web engagement devices spaced apart from each other and constructed and arranged to pass between said strips of the core introduction surface.
- 13. An automatic rewinding machine for forming logs of web material wound on cores, said web material having spaced apart lines of perforations, the machine comprising a first winding roller, a second winding roller and a third winding roller; a core inserter; and a web material separator positioned to operate between a point of release of a new core and a position of a nearly completed log, said web material separator periodically pinching said web material between a point of release/of said web material separator and said first winding roller when a peripheral speed of said web material separator is less than a speed at which the web material is moving to thereby cause said web material to separate along a line of said lines of perforations at a point in said web material located between said new core and said web material separator, and a core introduction surface on which said new core is introduced comprising a plurality of strips, said web material separator comprising a plurality of web engagement devices spaced apart from each other and constructed and arranged to pass between said strips of the core introduction surface.
- 14. An automatic rewinding machine for forming logs of web material wound on cores, said web material having spaced apart lines of perforations, the machine comprising a web material feeder, a winding cradle, a core inserter, and a web material separator positioned to operate between a point of release of a new core and a position of a nearly completed log, said web material separator periodically pinching said web material between said web material separator and said web material feeder when a peripheral speed of said web material separator and a speed at which the web material is moving are different, to thereby cause said web material to separate along a line of said lines of perforations at a point in the web material located between said new core and said nearly completed log, and a core introduction surface on which said new core is introduced comprising a plurality of strips, said web material separator comprising a plurality of web engagement devices spaced apart from each other and constructed and arranged to pass between said strips of the core introduction surface.
- 15. The automatic rewinding machine according to claim 14, wherein said web engagement devices are constructed and arranged to contact said web material during separation of said web material at a peripheral speed which is less than the speed of the web material but greater than zero and pinch said web material against said web material feeder which is positioned above said web engagement devices.
- 16. The automatic rewinding machine according to claim 12, 13, 14 or 15 wherein said web engagement devices contact said web material once per log cycle.
- 17. A surface winder for winding a web material on a series of cores comprising a frame defining a web material path having an entering end and a discharge end, a first winding roller on one side of said path adjacent said entering end, a second winding roller on an opposite side of said path spaced downstream from said entering end, a third winding roller on said one side of said path downstream of said first winding roller, a stationary surface on said frame on an opposite side of said path and spaced apart from said first winding roller to form a channel therebetween, a core inserter wherein the channel is disposed to accept a core from the core inserter and to provide that a core within the channel pushes the web material against said first winding roller along at least a portion of said path based on spacing between said stationary surface and said first winding roller, and an intermittently rotating web material separator having pads for pushing the web material against a surface of said first winding roller downstream of said core when speed of said pads and speed at which the web material is moving are different to thereby provide tension and separation of the web material at a point in the web material located between said core and a nearly completed log.
- 18. An automatic rewinding machine for receiving a web material for winding the web material on cores to form logs, said web material being in continuous motion at a web feeding speed and having spaced part lines of perforations, the machine comprising a first winding roller, a second winding roller, and a third winding roller; said first winding roller, said second winding roller and said third winding roller being positioned for simultaneously contacting a log during at least a portion of the winding of the web material on a core; a core inserter; and a movable web material separator which moves at a speed different from said web feeding speed and which periodically contacts said web material downstream of a newly inserted core thereby causing said web material to separate along a line of said lines of perforations at a point in said web material located between said newly inserted core and a nearly completed log.
- 19. An automatic rewinding machine for receiving a web material for winding the web material on cores to form logs, said web material being in continuous motion at a web feeding speed and having spaced part lines of perforations, the machine comprising a web material feeder, a winding cradle constructed and arranged to contact a log during at least a portion of the winding of the web material on a core, a core inserter, and a movable web material separator which moves at a speed lower than said web feeding speed and which periodically contacts said web material downstream of a newly inserted core thereby causing said web material to separate along a line of said lines of perforations at a point in the web material located between said web material separator and a nearly completed log.
- 20. An automatic rewinding machine for receiving a web material for winding the web material on cores to form logs, said web material being in continuous motion at a web feeding speed and having spaced apart lines of perforations, the machine comprising a web material feeder, a winding cradle constructed and arranged to contact a log during at least a portion of the winding of the web material on a core, a core inserter, and a movable web material separator which moves at a speed different from said web feeding speed and which periodically contacts said web material downstream of a newly inserted core thereby causing said web material to separate along a line of said lines of perforations at a point in said web material located between said newly inserted core and a nearly completed log.
- 21. The automatic rewinding machine of claim 18, 19 or 20 further comprising a core introduction surface on which a new core is introduced.
- 22. The automatic rewinding machine of claim 18 further comprising a core introduction surface, said core introduction surface being curved and extending from a point where a new core is released by said core inserter to a nip formed between said first winding roller and said second winding roller.
- 23. The automatic rewinding machine of claim 21 wherein said core introduction surface comprises a plurality of strips.
- 24. The automatic rewinding machine of claim 22 wherein said core introduction surface is apart from said first winding roller a distance less than an outside diameter of a new core.
- 25. An automatic rewinding machine for receiving a web material in continuous motion and for winding the web material on cores to form logs, the machine comprising a web material feeder on which said web material is moved, a winding cradle which contacts a log during at least a portion of the winding of the web material on a core, a core inserter, and a movable web material separator which periodically contacts said web material at a point in the web material which is located between a newly inserted core and a nearly completed log, said web material separator coacting with said web material feeder to separate said web material at a point in the web material located between said newly inserted core and said nearly completed log.
- 26. A rewinding machine according to claim 25, wherein said web material separator is provided with a cutting blade which coacts with a channel in said web feeder.
- 27. An automatic rewinding machine for receiving a web material in continuous motion and for winding the web material on cores to form logs, the machine comprising a first winding roller around which said web material is moved, a second winding roller, and a third winding roller; said first winding roller, said second winding roller and said third winding roller positioned for simultaneously contacting a log during at least a portion of the winding of the web material on a core; a core inserter; and a movable web material separator which coacts with said first winding roller to separate said web material at a point in said web material located between a newly inserted core and a nearly completed log.
- 28. A rewinding machine according to claim 27, wherein said web material separator is provided with a cutting blade which coacts with a channel in said first winding roller.
- 29. A method of winding a web material on a series of cores, said method comprising advancing said web material at a speed along a path around an outer surface of a web material feeder and onto a log being wound, introducing a core into a channel formed between said web material feeder and a surface spaced from said web material feeder wherein the core pushes the web material against said web material feeder at an upstream portion of said path, and periodically actuating a web material separator which is spaced from said web material feeder before and after web material separation to pinch the web material against said web material feeder at a portion of said path downstream from where said core is introduced while said web material separator is moving at a speed less than a speed of the web material to cause said web material to separate downstream of said web material separator.
- 30. A method of winding a web material on a series of the cores, the method comprising advancing said web material at a speed along a path around an outer surface of a first winding roller and onto a log being wound, introducing a core into a channel formed between said first winding roller and a surface spaced from said first winding roller, the core pinching the web material against said first winding roller at an upstream portion of said path, and periodically actuating a web material separator which is spaced from said first winding roller before and after web separation to pinch the web material against said first winding roller at a portion of said path downstream from where said core is introduced while said web material separator is moving at a speed different from a speed of the web material to thereby cause said web material to separate at a point in the web material located between said core and a nearly completed log.
- 31. A method of winding a web material on a series of cores, the method comprising advancing said web material at a speed along a path around on outer surface of a web material feeder and onto a log being wound, introducing a core into a channel formed between said web material feeder and a surface spaced from said web material feeder, the core pinching the web material against said web material feeder at an upstream portion of said path, and periodically actuating a web material separator spaced from said web material feeder before and after web material separation to pinch the web material against said web material feeder at a portion of said path downstream from where said core is introduced while said web material separator is moving at a speed different from a speed of the web material to thereby cause said web material to separate at a point in the web material located between said core and a nearly complete log.
- 32. A method of winding a web material on a series of cores, said web material having longitudinally spaced transversely extending lines of perforations, the method comprising advancing said web material at a speed along a path around an outer surface of a web material feeder and onto a log being wound, introducing a core and bringing said core into contact with said web material driven around said web material feeder so that the core pinches the web material against said web material feeder at an upstream portion of said path, and periodically actuating a web material separator spaced from said web material feeder before and after web material separation to pinch said web material against said web material feeder at a portion of said path downstream from where said core is introduced while said web material separator is moving at a speed less than a speed of the web material to thereby cause said web material to separate downstream of said web material separator.
- 33. A method of winding a web material on a series of cores, said web material having longitudinally spaced transversely extending lines of perforations, and the method comprising advancing said web material at a speed along a path around an outer surface of a first winding roller and onto a log being wound, introducing a core and bringing said core into contact with said web material driven around said first winding roller so that the core pinches the web material against said first winding roller at an upstream portion of said path, and periodically actuating a web material separator spaced from said first winding roller before and after web material separation to pinch said web material against said first winding roller at a portion of said path downstream from where said core is introduced while said web material separator is moving at a speed different from a speed of the web material to thereby cause said web material to separate at a point in said web material located between said core and a nearly completed log.
- 34. A method of winding a web material on a series of cores, said web material having longitudinally spaced transversely extending lines of perforations, the method comprising advancing said web material at a speed along a path around an outer surface of a web material feeder and onto a log being wound, introducing a core and bringing said core into contact with said web material driven around said web material feeder so that the core pinches the web material against said web material feeder at an upstream portion of said path, and periodically actuating a web material separator spaced from said web material feeder before and after web material separation to pinch said web material against said web material feeder at a portion of said path downstream from where said core is introduced while said web material separator is moving at a speed different from a speed of the web material and thereby causing said web material to separate at a point in said web material located between said core and a nearly completed log.
