Claims
- 1. A process for preparing at least one of a carboxylic acid and its anhydride comprising reacting and oxidizing an aldehyde having from 3 to about 21 carbon atoms with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a rhodium complex catalyst consisting essentially of rhodium stabilized by a pentavalent Group V ligand represented by the formula ##STR2## wherein each of R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 is a straight-chain saturated hydrocarbon group having from 5 to 8 carbon atoms, said reaction being conducted at a temperature of from about 40 to about 90.degree. C. and at a superatmospheric pressure of from about 1 to about 2 atmospheres gauge.
- 2. A process according to claim 1, wherein said pentavalent Group V ligand is trioctylphosphine oxide.
- 3. A process according to claim 1, wherein said reaction is conducted in an inert organic solvent.
- 4. A process according to claim 3, wherein said inert organic solvent is a member selected from the group consisting of a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon having from about 9 to about 20 carbon atoms, benzene and an aromatic hydrocarbon substituted by at least one saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon group having from 1 to about 15 carbon atoms.
- 5. A process according to claim 3, wherein the concentration of catalytically-active rhodium in said solvent is from about 25 to about 1200 parts per million, calculated as the free metal.
- 6. A process according to claim 3, wherein the concentration of ligand in the liquid reaction medium is from about 0.0008 to about 0.08 Molar, based upon the total liquid reaction medium.
- 7. A process according to claim 3, wherein said reaction is conducted at a substantially constant pressure between about 1 and about 2 atmospheres gauge and in the presence of carbon monoxide.
- 8. A process according to claim 3, wherein said aldehyde is propionaldehyde, wherein said acid is propionic acid and wherein said anhydride is propionic anhydride.
- 9. A process according to claim 8, wherein said inert organic solvent is toluene.
- 10. A process according to claim 9, wherein said pentavalent phosphorus ligand is trioctylphosphine oxide.
