Claims
- 1. A road towed ferry, comprising:
a central hull; a plurality of outboard hulls that are adjustable relative to said central hull between a road tow configuration and a ferry configuration; and wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry is adapted to be towed on a road by a tow vehicle; and wherein in the ferry configuration the ferry is adapted to ferry a load of up to at least about 16 tons over water.
- 2. The road towed ferry of claim 1, wherein in the ferry configuration the ferry is adapted to ferry a load of up to at least about 19 tons over water.
- 3. The road towed ferry of claim 1, wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry further comprises:
a width of no more than about 102 inches; a length of no more than about 48 feet; a total height of no more than about 14 feet; and a total weight of no more than about thirty four thousand pounds.
- 4. The road towed ferry of claim 1, wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry further comprises:
a width of no more than about 123 inches; a height of no more than about 9 feet; a length of no more than about 55.4 feet; and a total weight of no more than about 38,061 pounds.
- 5. The road towed ferry of claim 1, wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry further comprises:
a width of no more than about 18 feet; a height of no more than about 13 feet; and a length of no more than about 88 feet.
- 6. The road towed ferry of claim 1, further comprising:
a kingpost that is adapted to move said plurality of outboard hulls between the ferry configuration and the road tow configuration.
- 7. The road towed ferry of claim 1, further comprising:
a ballast system that is adapted to change the center of gravity of said ferry longitudinally and laterally in the ferry configuration.
- 8. The road towed ferry of claim 1, further comprising:
a plurality of hinged gunwales coupled to said plurality of outboard hulls.
- 9. The road towed ferry of claim 1, wherein in the ferry configuration the ferry is further adapted to ferry on water a towing vehicle that is adapted to tow the ferry in the tow configuration.
- 10. The road towed ferry of claim 1, wherein in the ferry configuration:
the central hull comprises a top surface that is adapted to carry a load; and said outboard hulls are adapted to carry a load.
- 11. The road towed ferry of claim 1, further comprising:
a kedging winch that is adapted to assist the ferry in kedging in the ferry configuration.
- 12. The road towed ferry of claim 1, further comprising:
a wheel assembly coupled to said central hull.
- 13. The road towed ferry of claim 12, wherein in the ferry configuration said wheel assembly is substantially non retractable.
- 14. A road towed ferry, comprising:
an adjustable hull system that is adjustable between a tow configuration and a ferry configuration; wherein in the tow configuration, the ferry has a width of no more than about 102 inches, a length of no more than about 48 feet; a height of no more than about 14 feet; and a total weight of about thirty four thousand pounds or less; and wherein in the ferry configuration the ferry is adapted to ferry over water a load of up to at least about 16 tons.
- 15. The road towed ferry of claim 14, wherein in the tow configuration the ferry comprises:
a width of no more than about 123 inches; a height of no more than about 9 feet; a length of no more than about 55.4 feet; and a total weight of no more than about 38,061 pounds.
- 16. The road towed ferry of claim 14, wherein in the tow configuration, the ferry comprises:
a width of no more than about 18 feet; a height of no more than about 13 feet; and a length of no more than about 88 feet.
- 17. The road towed ferry of claim 14, wherein in the ferry configuration the ferry is adapted to ferry over water a load of up to at least about 19 tons.
- 18. The road towed ferry of claim 14, further comprising:
a kingpost that is adapted to move said hull system between the ferry configuration and the road tow configuration.
- 19. The road towed ferry of claim 14, further comprising:
a ballast system adapted to change the center of gravity of said ferry longitudinally and laterally in the ferry configuration.
- 20. The road towed ferry of claim 14, further comprising:
a plurality of hinged gunwales coupled to said hull system.
- 21. The road towed ferry of claim 14, wherein in the ferry configuration the ferry is further adapted to ferry over water a towing vehicle that is adapted to tow the ferry in the tow configuration.
- 22. The road towed ferry of claim 14, wherein said hull system further comprises:
a central hull with a top surface; a plurality of outboard hulls; and wherein in the road tow configuration, said top surface is adapted to carry a load; and wherein said outboard hulls are adapted to carry a load.
- 23. The road towed ferry of claim 14, further comprising:
a kedging winch that is adapted to assist the ferry in kedging in the ferry configuration.
- 24. The road towed ferry of claim 14, further comprising a wheel assembly coupled to said hull system.
- 25. The road towed ferry of claim 24, wherein in the ferry configuration said wheel assembly is substantially non retractable.
- 26. A road towed ferry, comprising:
a hull system that is adjustable between a road tow configuration and a ferry configuration; wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry has a width of no more than about 123 inches, a height of no more than about 9 feet, a length of no more than about 55.4 feet, and a total weight of no more than about 38,061 pounds; and wherein in the ferry configuration the ferry is adapted to ferry over water a load of up to at least about 16 tons.
- 27. The road towed ferry in claim 26, wherein:
in the road tow configuration the ferry comprises a width of no more than about 102 inches, a length of no more than about 48 feet; a total height no more than about 14 feet; and a total weight of no more than about thirty four thousand pounds.
- 28. The road towed ferry of claim 26, wherein in the ferry configuration the ferry is adapted to ferry over water a load of up to at least about 19 tons.
- 29. The road towed ferry of claim 26, wherein the hull system comprises:
a central hull; and a plurality of outboard hulls that are adjustable relative to the central hull between first and second respective positions that correspond with the road tow and ferry configurations, respectively.
- 30. The road towed ferry of claim 29, further comprising:
a removable kingpost adapted to move said hull system between the ferry configuration and the road tow configuration.
- 31. The road towed ferry of claim 26, further comprising:
a ballast system adapted to change the center of gravity of said ferry longitudinally and laterally in the ferry configuration.
- 32. The road towed ferry of claim 26, further comprising a plurality of hinged gunwales coupled to said hull system.
- 33. The road towed ferry of claim 26, wherein:
in the ferry configuration the ferry is further adapted to ferry over water a towing vehicle that is adapted to tow the ferry in the road tow configuration.
- 34. The road towed ferry of claim 26, wherein said hull system further comprises:
a central hull with a top surface; a plurality of outboard hulls in said hull system; wherein in the road tow configuration said top surface is adapted to carry a load; and wherein in the ferry configuration said outboard hulls are adapted to carry a load.
- 35. The road towed ferry of claim 26, further comprising:
a kedging winch that is adapted to assist the ferry in kedging in the ferry configuration.
- 36. The road towed ferry of claim 26, further comprising a wheel assembly coupled to said hull system.
- 37. The road towed ferry of claim 36, wherein in the ferry configuration said wheel assembly is substantially non retractable.
- 38. A road towed ferry comprising:
a hull system that is adjustable between a road tow configuration and a ferry configuration; a wheel assembly coupled to said hull system; wherein said wheel assembly is substantially non retractable; wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry is adapted to be towed on a road by a tow vehicle; and wherein in the ferry configuration the ferry is adapted to ferry a load of up to at least about 16 tons over water.
- 39. The road towed ferry in claim 38, wherein in the ferry configuration the ferry is adapted to ferry a load of up to at least about 19 tons over water.
- 40. The road towed ferry in claim 38, wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry comprises:
a width of no more than about 102 inches; a length of no more than about 48 feet; a height of no more than about 14 feet; and a total weight of no more than about thirty four thousand pounds.
- 41. The road towed ferry of claim 38, wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry comprises:
a width of no more than about 123 inches; a height of no more than about 9 feet; a length of no more than about 55.4 feet; and a total weight of no more than about 38,061 pounds.
- 42. The road towed ferry of claim 38, wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry comprises:
a width of no more than about 18 feet; a height of no more than about 13 feet; and a length of no more than about 88 feet.
- 43. The road towed ferry of claim 38, wherein said hull system further comprises:
a central hull; and a plurality of outboard hulls that are adjustable relative to the central hull between first respective positions and second respective positions corresponding to the road tow and ferry configurations, respectively.
- 44. The road towed ferry of claim 43, further comprising:
a removable kingpost adapted to move said outboard hulls between the first and second respective positions.
- 45. The road towed ferry of claim 38, further comprising:
a ballast system that is adapted to change the center of gravity of said ferry longitudinally and laterally in the ferry configuration.
- 46. The road towed ferry of claim 38, further comprising a plurality of hinged gunwales coupled to said hull system.
- 47. The road towed ferry of claim 38, wherein in the ferry configuration the ferry is adapted to ferry over water a towing vehicle that is adapted to tow the ferry on a road in the tow configuration.
- 48. The road towed ferry of claim 38, wherein said hull system further comprises:
a central hull with a top surface; a plurality of outboard hulls in said hull system; wherein in the road tow configuration said top surface is adapted to carry a load; and wherein in the ferry configuration said outboard hulls are adapted to carry a load.
- 49. The road towed ferry of claim 38, further comprising:
a kedging winch that is adapted to assist the ferry in kedging in the ferry configuration.
- 50. The road towed ferry of claim 38, wherein said wheel assembly comprises two axles.
- 51. The road towed ferry of claim 38, wherein said wheel assembly comprises three axles.
- 52. A road towed ferry, comprising:
an adjustable hull system that is adjustable between a road tow configuration and a ferry configuration; a wheel assembly coupled to said hull system; at least one motor coupled to said wheel assembly; wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry is adapted to be towed on a road by a tow vehicle; and wherein in the ferry configuration the ferry is adapted to ferry a load over water.
- 53. The road towed ferry in claim 52, wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry comprises:
a width of about 102 inches or less; a length of about 48 feet or less; a height of 14 feet or less; and a total weight of about thirty four thousand pounds or less.
- 54. The road towed ferry of claim 52, wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry comprises:
a width of about 123 inches or less; a height of about 9 feet or less; a length of about 55.4 feet or less; and a total weight of about 38,061 pounds or less.
- 55. The road towed ferry of claim 52, wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry comprises:
a width of about 18 feet or less; a height of about 13 feet or less; and a length of about 88 feet or less.
- 56. The road towed ferry of claim 52, wherein said hull system further comprises:
a central hull; and a plurality of outboard hulls that are adjustable relative to the central hull between first and second respective positions corresponding to the road tow and ferry configurations, respectively.
- 57. The road towed ferry of claim 56, further comprising:
a removable kingpost adapted to move said outboard hulls between the first and second respective positions.
- 58. The road towed ferry of claim 52, further comprising:
a ballast system adapted to change the center of gravity of said ferry longitudinally and laterally in the ferry configuration.
- 59. The road towed ferry of claim 52, further comprising a plurality of hinged gunwales coupled to said hull system.
- 60. The road towed ferry of claim 52, wherein in the ferry configuration the ferry is adapted to ferry over water a towing vehicle that is adapted to tow the ferry on a road in the road tow configuration.
- 61. The road towed ferry of claim 52, wherein the hull system further comprises:
a central hull with a top surface; a plurality of outboard hulls; wherein in the road tow configuration said top surface is adapted to carry a load; and wherein in the ferry configuration said outboard hulls are adapted to carry a load.
- 62. The road towed ferry of claim 52, further comprising:
a kedging winch that is adapted to assist the ferry in kedging in the ferry configuration.
- 63. The road towed ferry of claim 52, wherein said wheel assembly comprises two axles.
- 64. The road towed ferry of claim 52, wherein said wheel assembly comprises three axles.
- 65. The road towed ferry of claim 52, wherein said motor is electric.
- 66. The road towed ferry of claim 52, wherein said motor is hydraulic.
- 67. A road towed ferry comprising:
a hull system that is adjustable between a road tow configuration that is adapted to be towed on a road by a tow vehicle and a ferry configuration that is adapted to ferry a load over water; and a ballast system that is adapted to change the center of gravity of said ferry longitudinally and laterally in the ferry configuration.
- 68. The road towed ferry in claim 67, wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry comprises:
a width of about 123 inches or less; a height of about 9 feet or less; a length of about 55.4 feet or less; and a total weight of about 38,061 pounds or less.
- 69. The road towed ferry of claim 67, wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry comprises:
a width of about 18 feet or less; a height of about 13 feet or less; and a length of about 88 feet or less.
- 70. The road towed ferry in claim 67, wherein:
in the road tow configuration the ferry comprises a width of about 102 inches or less, a length of about 48 feet or less, a total height of about 14 feet or less, and a total weight of about thirty four thousand pounds or less; and in the ferry configuration the ferry is adapted to ferry a load of up to at least about 16 tons over water.
- 71. The road towed ferry of claim 67, wherein in the ferry configuration the ferry is adapted to ferry a load of up to at least about 19 tons over water.
- 72. The road towed ferry of claim 67, wherein the hull system comprises:
a central hull; and a plurality of outboard hulls that are adjustable relative to the central hull between first and second respective positions corresponding to the road tow and ferry configurations, respectively.
- 73. The road towed ferry of claim 72, further comprising:
a removable kingpost that is adapted to move said outboard hulls between their first and second respective positions.
- 74. The road towed ferry of claim 67, further comprising a plurality of hinged gunwales coupled to said hull system.
- 75. The road towed ferry of claim 67, wherein in the ferry configuration the ferry is adapted to ferry a tow vehicle that is adapted to tow the ferry on a road in the road tow configuration.
- 76. The road towed ferry of claim 67, wherein said hull system comprises:
a central hull with a top surface; a plurality of outboard hulls; wherein in the road tow configuration said top surface is adapted to carry a load; and wherein in the ferry configuration said outboard hulls are adapted to carry a load.
- 77. The road towed ferry of claim 67, further comprising:
a kedging winch that is adapted to assist the ferry in kedging in the ferry configuration.
- 78. The road towed ferry of claim 67, further comprising:
a wheel assembly coupled to said hull system.
- 79. The road towed ferry of claim 78, wherein in the ferry configuration said wheel assembly is substantially non-retractable.
- 80. A road towed ferry, comprising:
a central hull; a plurality of outboard hulls that are adjustable relative to said central hull between first and second respective positions corresponding between a road tow configuration and a ferry configuration for the ferry, respectively; a hydraulic ballast system that is adapted to change the center of gravity of said ferry longitudinally and laterally in the ferry configuration; wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry is adapted to be towed on a road by a tow vehicle; and wherein in the ferry configuration the ferry is adapted to ferry the tow vehicle over water.
- 81. The road towed ferry in claim 80, wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry comprises:
a width of about 123 inches or less; a height of about 9 feet or less; a length of about 55.4 feet or less; and a total weight of about 38,061 pounds or less.
- 82. The road towed ferry of claim 80, wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry comprises:
a width of about 18 feet or less; a height of about 13 feet or less; and a length of about 88 feet or less.
- 83. The road towed ferry in claim 80, wherein:
in the road tow configuration the ferry comprises a width of about 102 inches or less, a length of about 48 feet or less, a total height of about 14 feet or less, and a total weight of about thirty four thousand pounds or less; and wherein in the ferry configuration the ferry is adapted to ferry a load of up to at least about 16 tons over water.
- 84. The road towed ferry of claim 80, wherein in the ferry configuration the ferry is adapted to ferry a load of up to at least about 19 tons over water.
- 85. The road towed ferry of claim 80, further comprising:
a removable kingpost adapted to move said outboard hulls between their first and second respective positions.
- 86. The road towed ferry of claim 80, further comprising a plurality of hinged gunwales coupled to said outboard hulls.
- 87. The road towed ferry of claim 80, wherein in the ferry configuration the ferry is adapted to ferry over water a tow vehicle that is adapted to tow the ferry over a road in the road tow configuration.
- 88. The road towed ferry of claim 80, wherein:
said central hull comprises a top surface; in the road tow configuration said top surface is adapted to carry a load; and in the ferry configuration said outboard hulls are adapted to carry a load.
- 89. The road towed ferry of claim 80, further comprising:
a kedging winch that is adapted to assist the ferry in kedging in the ferry configuration.
- 90. The road towed ferry of claim 80, further comprising a wheel assembly coupled to said hull system.
- 91. The road towed ferry of claim 90, wherein in the ferry configuration said wheel assembly is substantially non-retractable.
- 92. A road towed ferry comprising:
a hull system that is adjustable between a road tow configuration and a ferry configuration; a plurality of adjustable gunwales coupled to said hull system; wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry is adapted to be towed over a road by a tow vehicle; and wherein in the ferry configuration the ferry is adapted to ferry a load over water.
- 93. The road towed ferry of claim 92, wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry further comprises:
a width of about 102 inches or less; a length of about 48 feet or less; a total height of about 14 feet or less; and a total weight of about thirty four thousand pounds or less.
- 94. The road towed ferry of claim 92, wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry further comprises:
a width of about 123 inches or less; a height of about 9 feet or less; a length of about 55.4 feet or less; and a total weight of about 38,061 pounds or less.
- 95. The road towed ferry of claim 92, wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry further comprises:
a width of about 18 feet or less; a height of about 13 feet or less; and a length of about 88 feet or less.
- 96. The road towed ferry of claim 92, wherein in the ferry configuration the ferry is adapted to ferry a load of up to at least about 16 tons over water.

- 98. The road towed ferry of claim 92, further comprising:
a removable kingpost adapted to move said hull system between a ferry configuration and a road towing configuration.
- 99. The road towed ferry of claim 92, further comprising:
a ballast system that is adapted to change the center of gravity of said ferry longitudinally and laterally in the ferry configuration.
- 100. The road towed ferry of claim 92, wherein in the ferry configuration the ferry is adapted to ferry a tow vehicle that is adapted to tow the ferry over a road in the tow configuration.
- 101. The road towed ferry of claim 92, wherein the hull system further comprises:
a central hull with a top surface; a plurality of adjustable outboard hulls in said hull system; wherein in the road tow configuration said top surface is adapted to carry a load; and wherein in the ferry configuration said outboard hulls are adapted to carry a load.
- 102. The road towed ferry of claim 92, further comprising:
a kedging winch that is adapted to assist the ferry in kedging in the ferry configuration.
- 103. The road towed ferry of claim 92, further comprising a wheel assembly coupled to said hull system.
- 104. The road towed ferry of claim 103, wherein in the ferry configuration said wheel assembly is substantially non retractable.
- 105. A watercraft, comprising:
a hull system with a central hull and an outboard hull that is adjustable relative to the central hull between first and second positions; a hull lock system cooperating with the central hull and outboard hull and comprising a protrusion and a cooperating receiver; wherein one of the protrusion and receiver is located on the central hull; wherein the other of the protrusion and receiver is located on the outboard hull; and wherein the protrusion and receiver are adapted to be engaged in the first position and to be disengaged in the second position.
- 106. The watercraft of claim 105, wherein the receiver comprises a keyway fitting that is adapted to receive the protrusion in a lock-and-key relationship.
- 107. The watercraft of claim 105, wherein:
the hull system comprises a plurality of said outboard hulls that are each adjustable relative to said central hull between respective first and second positions; the watercraft further comprises a plurality of said hull lock systems; and each of the outboard hulls cooperates with at least one of said hull lock systems with respect to the central hull.
- 108. The watercraft of claim 105, wherein:
the first and second positions correspond with ferry and road tow configurations, respectively; in the ferry configuration the watercraft is adapted to ferry a load over water; and in the road tow configuration the watercraft is adapted to be towed over a road with a tow vehicle; such that the watercraft is adapted for use as a road towed ferry.
- 109. A road towed ferry system, comprising:
an armored vehicle having a weight of at least about 16 tons; and a ferry that cooperates with the armored vehicle and is adjustable between a road-tow configuration and a ferry configuration; wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry is adapted to be towed over a road by the armored vehicle; and wherein in the ferry configuration the ferry is adapted to ferry the armored vehicle over water.
- 110. The system of claim 109, wherein the armored vehicle weighs at least about 19 tons.
- 111. The road towed ferry of claim 109, wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry further comprises:
a width of about 102 inches or less; a length of about 48 feet or less; a total height of about 14 feet or less; and a total weight of about thirty four thousand pounds or less.
- 112. The road towed ferry of claim 109, wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry further comprises:
a width of about 123 inches or less; a height of about 9 feet or less; a length of about 55.4 feet or less; and a total weight of about 38,061 pounds or less.
- 113. The road towed ferry of claim 109, wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry further comprises:
a width of about 18 feet or less; a height of about 13 feet or less; and a length of about 88 feet or less.
- 114. A road towed ferry, comprising:
a hull system with a central hull and a plurality of outboard hulls that are each adjustable between first and second respective positions that correspond with road tow and ferry configurations for the ferry; a wheel system coupled to the central hull; a kedging winch coupled to the central hull; a ballast system coupled to the hull system and adapted to adjust the center of gravity of the ferry in the ferry configuration; a gunwale system that cooperates with the hull system and includes a plurality of gunwales that each has an adjustable position between the road tow and ferry configurations; and a propulsion system cooperating with the hull system; wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry is adapted to be towed over a road by a tow vehicle; and wherein in the ferry configuration the ferry is adapted to ferry a load of up to at least about 16 tons over water.
- 115. The ferry of claim 114, wherein in the ferry configuration the ferry is adapted to ferry a load of up to at least about 19 tons over water.
- 116. The road towed ferry of claim 114, wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry further comprises:
a width of about 102 inches or less; a length of about 48 feet or less; a total height of about 14 feet or less; and a total weight of about thirty four thousand pounds or less.
- 117. The road towed ferry of claim 114, wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry further comprises:
a width of about 123 inches or less; a height of about 9 feet or less; a length of about 55.4 feet or less; and a total weight of about 38,061 pounds or less.
- 118. The road towed ferry of claim 114, wherein in the road tow configuration the ferry further comprises:
