Claims
- 1. A machine for bending an orthodontic appliance into a desired configuration, comprising:a first gripper tool having a first gripping structure for releasably holding said orthodontic appliance; an elongate moveable arm having a proximal portion mounted a distance away from said first gripper tool and a free distal end portion, said moveable arm constructed such that said free distal portion of said moveable arm is capable of independent movement relative to said first gripper tool about at least two independently controllable axes; a second gripping tool mounted to said distal portion of said moveable arm having a second gripping structure for releasably holding said orthodontic appliance; and a control system operative of said moveable arm and said first and second gripping tools so as to cause said first and second gripping tools to grip said orthodontic appliance while said gripping tools are separated from each other and to cause said second gripping tool to move relative to said first gripping tool about at least one of said at least two independently controllable axes to thereby bend said orthodontic appliance a desired amount; wherein said moveable arm is capable moving said second gripping tool relative to said first gripping tool about three translation axes and three rotation axes.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said apparatus further comprises a force sensor system for detecting forces generated by said orthodontic appliance after said orthodontic appliance has been bent by said first and second gripping tools.
- 3. A machine for bending an orthodontic appliance into a desired configuration, comprising:a first gripper tool having a first gripping structure for releasably holding said orthodontic appliance; an elongate moveable arm having a proximal portion mounted a distance away from said first gripper tool and a free distal end portion, said moveable arm constructed such that said free distal portion of said moveable arm is capable of independent movement relative to said first gripper tool about at least two independently controllable axes; a second gripping tool mounted to said distal portion of said moveable arm having a second gripping structure for releasably holding said orthodontic appliance; and a control system operative of said moveable arm and said first and second gripping tools so as to cause said first and second gripping tools to grip said orthodontic appliance while said gripping tools are separated from each other and to cause said second gripping tool to move relative to said first gripping tool about at least one of said at least two independently controllable axes to thereby bend said orthodontic appliance a desired amount; wherein said apparatus further comprises a force sensor system for detecting forces generated by said orthodontic appliance after said orthodontic appliance has been bent by said first and second gripping tools; and wherein said force system comprises a first force sensor coupled to said first gripping tool and a second force sensor coupled to said second gripping tool.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein said first and second force sensors have unequal levels of sensitivity.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said apparatus further comprises a heating system for applying heat to said orthodontic appliance while said orthodontic appliance is being bent by said first and second gripping tools.
- 6. A machine for bending an orthodontic appliance into a desired configuration, comprising:a first gripper tool having a first gripping structure for releasably holding said orthodontic appliance; an elongate moveable arm having a proximal portion mounted a distance away from said first gripper tool aud a free distal end portion, said moveable arm constructed such that said free distal portion of said moveable arm is capable of independent movement relative to said first gripper tool about at least two independently controllable axes; a second gripping tool mounted to said distal portion of said moveable arm having a second gripping structure for releasably holding said orthodontic appliance; and a control system operative of said moveable arm and said first and second gripping tools so as to cause said first and second gripping tools to grip said orthodontic appliance while said gripping tools are separated from each other and to cause said second gripping tool to move relative to said first gripping tool about at least one of said at least two independently controllable axes to thereby bead said orthodontic appliance a desired amount; wherein said apparatus further coniprises a heating system for applying heat to said orthodontic appliance while said orthodontic appliance is being bent by said first and second gripping tools and wherein said heating system comprises a resistive heating system supplying an electric current to said orthodontic appliance either during a bending movement of said arm, or while said orthodontic appliance is held in a bent condition.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein said first and second gripping tools are heated above ambient temperature while said orthodontic appliance is being bent.
- 8. A machine for bending an orthodontic appliance into a desired configuration, comprising:a first gripper tool having a first gripping structure for releasably holding said orthodontic appliance; an elongate moveable arm having a proximal portion mounted a distance away from said first gripper tool and a free distal end portion, said moveable arm constructed such that said free distal portion of said moveable arm is capable of independent movement relative to said first gripper tool about at least two independently controllable axes; a second gripping tool mounted to said distal portion of said moveable arm having a second gripping structure for releasably holding said orthodontic appliance; and a control system operative of said moveable arm and said first and second gripping tools so as to cause said first and second gripping tools to grip said orthodontic appliance while said gripping tools are separated from each other and to cause said second gripping tool to move relative to said first gripping tool about at least one of said at least two independently controllable axes to thereby bend said orthodontic appliance a desired amount; wherein said control system operates to move said arm and said first and second gripping tools so as to cause said second gripping tool to draw said orthodontic appliance from said first gripping tool along a translation axis in a series of incremental movements, and wherein a bend is formed in said orthodontic appliance between at least some of said incremental movements.
- 9. A machine for bending an orthodontic appliance into a desired configuration, comprising:a first gripper tool having a first gripping structure for releasably holding said orthodontic appliance; an elongate inoveable arm having a proximal portion mounted a distance away from said first gripper tool and a free distal end portion, said moveable arm constructed such that said free distal portion of said moveable arm is capable of independent movement relative to said first gripper tool about at least two independently controllable axes; a second gripping tool mounted to said distal portion of said moveable arm having a second gripping structure for releasably holding said orthodontic appliance; and a control system operative of said moveable arm and said first and second gripping tools so as to cause said first and second gripping tools to grip said orthodontic appliance while said gripping tools are separated from each other and to cause said second gripping tool to move relative to said first gripping tool about at least one of said at least two independently controllable axes to thereby bend said orthodontic appliance a desired amount; wherein said arm is capable of motion along three translation axes and three rotational axes, and wherein said bends comprise a twist in said orthodontic appliance.
- 10. A machine for bending an orthodontic appliance into a desired configuration, comprising:a first gripper tool having a first gripping structure for releasably holding said orthodontic appliance; an elongate moveable arm having a proximal portion mounted a distance away from said first gripper tool and a free distal end portion, said moveable arm constructed such that said free distal portion of said moveable arm is capable of independent movement relative to said first gripper tool about at least two independently controllable axes; a second gripping tool mounted to said distal portion of said mnoveable arm having a second gripping structure for releasably holding said orthodontic appliance; and a control system operative of said moveable arm and said first and second gripping tools so as to cause said first and second gripping tools to grip said orthodontic appliance while said gripping tools are separated from each other and to cause said second gripping tool to move relative to said first gripping tool about at least one of said at least two independently controllable axes to thereby bend said orthodontic appliance a desired amount; wherein said arm is capable of motion along three translation axes and three rotational axes, and wherein said bends comprise a combination of a bend and a twist.
- 11. A machine for bending an orthodontic appliance into a desired configuration, comprising:a first gripper tool having a first gripping structure for releasably holding said orthodontic appliance; an elongate moveable arm having a proximal portion mounted a distance away from said first gripper tool and a free distal end portion, said moveable arm constructed such that said free distal portion of said moveable arm is capable of independent movement relative to said first gripper tool about at least two independently controllable axes; a second gripping tool mounted to said distal portion of said moveable arm having a second gripping structure for releasably holding said orthodontic appliance; and a control system operative of said moveable arm and said first and second gripping tools so as to cause said first and second gripping tools to grip said orthodontic appliance while said gripping tools are separated from each other and to cause said second gripping tool to move relative to said first gripping tool about at least one of said at least two independently controllable ages to thereby bend said orthodontic appliance a desired amount; wherein said apparatus further comprises a force sensor system for detecting forces generated by said orthodontic appliance after said orthodontic appliance has been bent by said first and second gripping tools, and wherein said control system moves said moveable arm relative to said first gripping tool in response to forces detected by said force sensor system in order to over-bend said orthodontic appliance, wherein said bend in said orthodontic appliance is deemed complete when said orthodontic appliance has been bent said desired amount and the forces measured by said force sensor system are below a predetermined threshold.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11, further comprises a machine-readable memory, and wherein information as to the movement to create the over-bend in said orthodontic appliance is stored in said memory.
- 13. A machine for bending an orthodontic appliance into a desired configuration, comprising:a first gripper tool having a first gripping structure for releasably holding said orthodontic appliance; an elongate moveable arm having a proximal portion mounted a distance away from said first gripper tool and a free distal end portion, said moveable arm constructed such that said free distal portion of said moveable arm is capable of independent movement relative to said first gripper tool about at least two independently controllable axes; a second gripping tool mounted to said distal portion of said moveable arm having a second gripping structure for releasably holding said orthodontic appliance; and a control system operative of said moveable arm and said first and second gripping tools so as to cause said first and second gripping tools to grip said orthodontic appliance while said gripping tools are separated from each other and to cause said second gripping tool to move relative to said first gripping tool about at least one of said at least two independently controllable axes to thereby bend said orthodontic appliance a desired amount; wherein said control system operates said moveable arm to over-bend said orthodontic appliance based on a finite elements analysis of said orthodontic appliance.
- 14. A machine for bending an orthodontic appliance into a desired configuration, comprising:a first gripper tool having a first gripping structure for releasably holding said orthodontic appliance; an elongate inoveable ama having a proximal portion mounted a distance away from said first gripper tool and a free distal end portion, said moveable arm constructed such that said free distal portion of said moveable arm is capable of independent movement relative to said first gripper tool about at least two independently controllable axes; a second gripping tool mounted to said distal portion of said moveable arm having a second gripping structure for releasably holding said orthodontic appliance; and a control system operative of said moveable arm and said first and second gripping tools so as to cause said first and second gripping tools to grip said orthodontic appliance while said gripping tools are separated from each other and to cause said second gripping tool to move relative to said first gripping tool about at least one of said at least two independently controllable axes to thereby bend said orthodontic appliance a desired amount; wherein said apparatus further comprises an optical sensor system detecting the shape of said orthodontic appliance after said bend in said orthodontic appliance has been made.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein one of said first and second gripping tools opens after said orthodontic appliance has been bent by said first and second gripping tools thereby allowing said orthodontic appliance to assume a shape in a released state, and wherein said optical sensor system detects said released shape of said orthodontic appliance, and wherein said control system moves the opened gripper tool to grip again the orthodontic appliance in its released shape.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein said robot further comprises a force sensor system for detecting forces generated by said orthodontic appliance after said orthodontic appliance has been bent by said first and second gripping tools,wherein said moveable arm is operated to move said orthodontic appliance to a zero-force position in which the forces detected by said force system are below a predetermined threshold after said bend has been placed in said orthodontic appliance, and wherein said optical sensor system detects said shape of said orthodontic appliance in said zero-force position.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein said optical sensor system comprises a camera.
- 18. A machine for bending an orthodontic appliance into a desired conliguration, comprising:a first gripper tool having a first gripping structure for releasably holding said orthodontic appliance; an elongate moveable arm having a proximal portion mounted a distance away from said first gripper tool and a free distal end portion, said moveable arm constructed such that said free distal portion of said moveable arm is capable of independent movement relative to said first gripper tool about at least two independently controllable axes; a second gripping tool mounted to said distal portion of said moveable arm having a second gripping structure for releasably holding said orthodontic appliance; and a control system operative of said moveable arm and said first and second gripping tools so as to cause said first and second gripping tools to grip said orthodontic appliance while said gripping tools are separated from each other and to cause said second gripping tool to move relative to said first gripping tool about at least one of said at least two independently controllable axes to thereby bend said orthodontic appliance a desired amount; wherein said orthodontic appliance comprises a shape memory alloy and wherein said robot further comprises a resistive heating system for heating said orthodontic appliance during bending or while said orthodontic appliance is placed in a bent condition so as to have said orthodontic appliance retain said bend.
- 19. A machine for bending an orthodontic appliance into a desired configuration, comprising:a first gripper tool having a first gripping structure for releasably holding said orthodontic appliance; an elongate moveable arm having a proximal portion mounted a distance away from said first gripper tool and a free distal end portion, said moveable arm constructed such that said free distal portion of said moveable arm is capable of independent movement relative to said first gripper tool about at least two independently controllable axes; a second gripping tool mounted to said distal portion of said moveable arm having a second gripping structure for releasably holding said orthodontic appliance; and a control system operative of said moveable arm and said first and second gripping tools so as to cause said first and second gripping tools to grip said orthodontic appliance while said gripping tools are separated from each other and to cause said second gripping tool to move relative to said first gripping tool about at least one of said at least two independently controllable axes to thereby bend said orthodontic appliance a desired amount; wherein said orthodontic appliance comprises an orthodontic wire, and wherein said robot further comprises a supply of straight wires, and wherein said robot automatically accesses said supply by said second gripping tool gripping a straight wire from said supply, said second gripping tool feeding said straight wire into said first gripping structure of said first gripping tool.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein said first gripping structure of said first gripping tool comprises two opposing gripping fingers moveable between open and closed positions, and wherein in said opened position a gap is formed between said two gripping fingers for insertion of said straight wire into said first gripping tool.
- 21. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein said gripping fingers comprise a plurality of gripping contours so as to permit said gripping fingers to grip wires of different cross-sectional shapes without having to change the gripping tools.
- 22. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein said gripping fingers apply a varying gripping force to said wire, whereby said wire can slide through said gripper if the forces acting on said gripping tool by said wire exceed a predetermined limit.
- 23. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein said supply comprises a magazine storing a plurality of said straight wires separated from each other.
- 24. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein said supply comprises a conveyor system carrying said wires separated from each other.
- 25. The apparatus claimed in any one of claims 1-10, 14-18, wherein said orthodontic appliance comprises an orthodontic wire.
- 26. A machine for bending a medical device into a desired configuration, comprisinga first gripping tool and a second gripping tool, each of said gripping tools having a gripping structure for releasably holding said medical device; two moveable arms, each having a free distal end portion adapted to mount said first and second gtipping tools to said first and second moveable arms, respectively; at least one of said two moveable arms capable of independent movement relative to the other of said arms about at least two different axes; a control system operative of said moveable arms and the gripping tools to grip the medical device while said gripping tools are separated from each other and to cause the gripping tools to move relative to each other about at least two axes to thereby bend said medical device a desired amount; wherein at least one said moveable arms is capable moving relative to the other of said moveable arms about three translation axes and three rotation axes.
- 27. A machine for bending a medical device into a desired configuration, comprisinga first gripping tool and a second gripping tool, each of said gripping tools having a gripping structure for releasably holding said medical device; two moveable arms, each having a free distal end portion adapted to mount said first and second gripping tools to said first and second moveable arms, respectively; at least one of said two moveable arms capable of independent movement relative to the other of said arms about at least two different axes; a control system operative of said moveable arms and the gripping tools to grip the medical device while said gripping tools are separated from each other and to cause the gripping tools to move relative to each other about at least two axes to thereby bend said medical device a desired amount; wherein said apparatus further comprises a force sensor system for detecting forces generated by said medical device after said medical device has been bent by said first and second gripping tools.
- 28. The apparatus of claim 27, wherein said force system comprises a first force sensor coupled to said first gripping tool and a second force sensor coupled to said second gripping tool.
- 29. The apparatus of claim 28, wherein said first and second force sensors have unequal levels of sensitivity.
- 30. The apparatus of claim 27, wherein said apparatus further comprises a heating system for applying heat to said medical device while said medical device is being bent by said first and second gripping tools.
- 31. A machine for bending a medical device into a desired configuration, comprisinga first gripping tool and a second gripping tool, each of said gripping tools having a gripping structure for releasably holding said medical device; two moveable arms, each having a free distal end portion adapted to mount said first and second gripping tools to said first and second moveable arms, respectively; at least one of said two moveable arms capable of independent movement relative to the other of said arms about at least two different axes; a control system operative of said moveable arms and the gripping tools to grip the medical device while said gripping tools are separated from each other and to cause the gripping tools to move relative to each other about at least two axes to thereby bend said medical device a desired amount; wherein said apparatus further comprises a heating system for applying heat to said medical device while said medical device is being bent by said first and second gripping tools; wherein said heating system comprises a resistive heating system supplying an electric current to said medical device either during a bending movement of said arm, or while said medical device is held in a bent condition.
- 32. A machine for bending a medical device into a desired configuration, comprisinga first gripping tool and a second gripping tool, each of said gripping tools having a gripping structure for releasably holding said medical device; two moveable arms, each having a free distal end portion adapted to mount said first and second gripping tools to said first and second moveable arms, respectively; at least one of said two moveable arms capable of independent movement relative to the other of said arms about at least two different axes; a control system operative of said moveable arms and the gripping tools to grip the medical device while said gripping tools are separated from each other and to cause the gripping tools to move relative to each other about at least two axes to thereby bend said medical device a desired amount; wherein said apparatus further comprises a heating system for applying heat to said medical device while said medical device is being bent by said first and second gripping tools; and wherein said first and second gripping tools axe heated above ambient temperature while said orthodontic appliance is being bent.
- 33. A machine for bending a medical device into a desired configuration, comprisinga first gripping tool and a second gripping tool, each of said gripping tools having a gripping structure for releasably holding said medical device; two moveable arms, each having a free distal end portion adapted to mount said first and second gripping tools to said first and second moveable arms, respectively; at least one of said two moveable arms capable of independent movement relative to the other of said arms about at least two different axes; a control system operative of said moveable arms and the gripping tools to grip the medical device while said gripping tools are separated from each other and to cause the gripping tools to move relative to each other about at least two axes to thereby bend said medical device a desired amount; wherein said control system operates to move one said first and second gripping tools so as to cause said second gripping tool to draw said medical device from said first gripping tool along a translation axis in a series of incremental movements, and wherein a bend is formed in said medical device between at least some of said incremental movements.
- 34. A machine for bending a medical device into a desired configuration, comprisinga first gripping tool and a second gripping tool, each of said gripping tools having a gripping structure for releasably holding said medical device; two moveable arms, each having a free distal end portion adapted to mount said first and second gripping tools to said first and second moveable arms, respectively; at least one of said two moveable arms capable of independent movement relative to the other of said arms about at least two different axes; a control system operative of said moveable arms and the gripping tools to grip the medical device while said gripping tools are separated from each other and to cause the gripping tools to move relative to each other about at least two axes to thereby bend said medical device a desired amount; wherein said arm is capable of motion along three translation axes and three rotational axes, and wherein said bends comprise a twist in said medical device.
- 35. A machine for bending a medical device into a desired configuration, comprisinga first gripping tool and a second gripping tool, each of said gripping tools having a gripping structure for releasably holding said medical device; two moveable arms, each having a free distal end portion adapted to mount said first and second gripping tools to said first and second moveable arms, respectively; at least one of said two moveable arms capable of independent movement relative to the other of said arms about at least two different axes; a control system operative of said moveable arms and the gripping tools to grip the medical device while said gripping tools are separated from each other and to cause the gripping tools to move relative to each other about at least two axes to thereby bend said medical device a desired amount; wherein said arms are capable of motion along three translation axes and three rotational axes relative to the other, and wherein said bends comprise a combination of a bend and a twist.
- 36. A machine for bending a medical device into a desired configuration, comprisinga first gripping tool and a second gripping tool, each of said gripping tools having a gripping structure for releasably holding said medical device; two moveable arms, each having a free distal end portion adapted to mount said first and second gripping tools to said first and second moveable arms, respectively; at least one of said two moveable arms capable of independent movement relative to the other of said arms about at least two different axes; a control system operative of said moveable arms and the gripping tools to grip the medical device while said gripping tools are separated from each other and to cause the gripping tools to move relative to each other about at least two axes to thereby bend said medical device a desired amount; wherein said apparatus further comprises a force sensor system for detecting forces generated by said medical device after said medical device has been bent by said first and second gripping tools, and wherein said control system moves at least one of said moveable arms relative to the other in response to forces detected by said force sensor system in order to over-bend said medical device, wherein said bend in said medical device is deemed complete when said medical device been bent said desired amount and the forces measured by said force sensor system are below a predetermined threshold.
- 37. The apparatus of claim 36, further comprises a machine-readable memory, and wherein information as to the movement to create the over-bend in said medical device is stored in said memory.
- 38. A machine for bending a medical device into a desired configuration, comprisinga first gripping tool and a second gripping tool, each of said gripping tools having a gripping structure for releasably holding said medical device; two moveable arms, each having a free distal end portion adapted to mount said first and second gripping tools to said first and second moveable arms, respectively; at least one of said two moveable arms capable of independent movement relative to the other of said arms about at least two different axes; a control system operative of said moveable arms and the gripping tools to grip the medical device while said gripping tools are separated from each other and to cause the gripping tools to move relative to each other about at least two axes to thereby bend said medical device a desired amount; wherein said control system operates said moveable arm to over-bend said medical device based on a finite elements analysis of said medical device.
- 39. A machine for bending a medical device into a desired configuration, comprisinga first gripping tool and a second gripping tool, each of said gripping tools having a gripping structure for releasably holding said medical device; two moveable arms, each having a free distal end portion adapted to mount said first and second gripping tools to said first and second moveable arms, respectively; at least one of said two moveable arms capable of independent movement relative to the other of said arms about at least two different axes; a control system operative of said moveable arms and the gripping tools to grip the medical device while said gripping tools are separated from each other and to cause the gripping tools to move relative to each other about at least two axes to thereby bend said medical device a desired amount; wherein said apparatus further comprises an optical sensor system detecting the shape of said medical device after said bend in said medical device has been made.
- 40. The apparatus of claim 39, wherein one of said first and second gripping tools opens after said medical device has been bent by said first and second gripping tools thereby allowing said medical device to assume a shape in a released state, and wherein said optical sensor system detects said released shape of said medical device, and wherein said control system moves the opened gripper tool to grip again the medical device in its released shape.
- 41. The apparatus of claim 39, wherein said apparatus further comprises a force sensor system for detecting forces generated by said medical device after said medical device has been bent by said first and second gripping tools,wherein at least one of said moveable arm is operated to move said medical device to a zero-force position in which the forces detected by said force system are below a predetermined threshold after said bend has been placed in said medical device, and wherein said optical sensor system detects said shape of said medical device in said zero-force position.
- 42. The apparatus of claim 39, wherein said optical sensor system comprises a camera.
- 43. A machine for bending a medical device into a desired configuration, comprisinga first gripping tool and a second gripping tool, each of said gripping tools having a gripping structure for releasably holding said medical device; two moveable arms, each having a free distal end portion adapted to mount said first and second gripping tools to said first and second moveable arms, respectively; at least one of said two moveable arms capable of independent movement relative to the other of said arms about at least two different axes; a control system operative of said moveable arms and the gripping tools to grip the medical device while said gripping tools are separated from each other and to cause the gripping tools to move relative to each other about at least two axes to thereby bend said medical device a desired amount; wherein said medical device comprises a shape memory material and wherein said apparatus further comprises a resistive heating system for heating said shape memory material during bending or while said orthodontic appliance is placed in a bent condition so as to have said shape memory material retain said bend.
- 44. A machine for bending a medical device into a desired configuration, comprisinga first gripping tool and a second gripping tool, each of said gripping tools having a gripping structure for releasably holding said medical device; two moveable arms, each having a free distal end portion adapted to mount said first and second gripping tools to said first and second moveable arms, respectively; at least one of said two moveable arms capable of independent movement relative to the other of said arms about at least two different axes; a control system operative of said moveable arms and the gripping tools to grip the medical device while said gripping tools are separated from each other and to cause the gripping tools to move relative to each other about at least two axes to thereby bend said medical device a desired amount; wherein said medical device comprises an orthodontic wire, and wherein said apparatus further comprises a supply of straight wires, and wherein said apparatus automatically accesses said supply by one of said first or second gripping tools gripping a straight wire from said supply, said gripping tool feeding said straight wire into the gripping structure of the other of said first or second gripping tools.
- 45. The apparatus of claim 44, wherein said first gripping structure of said first gripping tool comprises two opposing gripping fingers moveable between open and closed positions, and wherein in said opened position a gap is formed between said two gripping fingers for insertion of said straight wire into said first gripping tool.
- 46. The apparatus of claim 45, wherein said gripping fingers comprise a plurality of gripping contours so as to permit said gripping fingers to grip wires of different cross-sectional shapes without having to change gripping tools.
- 47. The apparatus of claim 45, wherein said gripping fingers apply a varying gripping force to said wire, whereby said wire can slide through said gripper if the forces acting on said gripping tool by said wire exceed a predetermined limit.
- 48. The apparatus of claim 45, wherein said supply comprises a magazine storing a plurality of said straight wires separated from each other.
- 49. The apparatus of claim 45, wherein said supply comprises a conveyor system carrying said wires separated from each other.
- 50. The apparatus claimed in any one of claims 26-43, wherein said medical device comprises an orthodontic wire.
- 51. An automated fixation plate bending system, comprising:a first gripping tool; an elongate moveable arm having a first end, a distal end and a second gripping tool mounted to said distal end of said moveable arm; said first gripping tool gripping a fixation plate at one location thereof and said second gripping tool gripping said fixation plate at a second location; and a control system operating said moveable arm so as to move said moveable arm relative to said first gripping tool while said first and second gripping tools grip said fixation plate to thereby form a bend in said fixation plate having a desired configuration; wherein said fixation plate comprises an elongate member having a plurality of apertures for receiving screws, and wherein the control system determines the shape for a bend for said fixation plate from a scan of a patient.
- 52. An automated bending system for a medical appliance, comprising:a bending machine comprising a first gripping tool and an elongate moveable arm having a first end, a distal end and a second gripping tool mounted to said distal end of said moveable arm, said bending machine adapted for gripping a medical appliance at one location thereof with said first gripping tool and at a second location thereof with said second gripping tool; and a control system operating said moveable arm of said bending machine so as to move said moveable arm relative to said first gripping tool while said first and second gripping tools grip said medical appliance to thereby form a bend in said medical appliance having a desired configuration; wherein each of said first and second gripping tools comprise a pair of opposing gripping fingers moveable between open and closed positions, said gripping fingers for gripping said medical appliance; and wherein the first and second gripping tools further comprise a force sensing system coupled to said gripping fingers for detecting forces imparted by said medical appliance after a bend has been placed in said medical device.
- 53. An automated bending system for a medical appliance, comprising:a bending machine comprising a first gripping tool and an elongate moveable arm having a first end, a distal end and a second gripping tool mounted to said distal end of said moveable arm, said bending machine adapted for gripping a medical appliance at nee location thereof with said first gripping tool and at a second location thereof with said second gripping tool; and a control system operating said moveable arm of said bending machine so as to move said moveable arm relative to said first gripping tool while said first and second gripping tools grip said medical appliance to thereby form a bend in said medical appliance having a desired configuration; wherein each of said first and second gripping tools comprise a pair of opposing gripping fingers moveable between open and closed positions, said gripping fingers for gripping said medical appliance; and an optical sensor system detecting the shape of said medical appliance during bending or after said bend in said medical appliance has been made.
- 54. The system of claim 52, wherein said moveable arm comprises a six-axis robot arm.
- 55. The system of claim 52, wherein said medical appliance is selected from the group of appliances consisting of retainers, wires, fixation plates, compression plates, implants, prostheses, surgical tools, orthotic devices, endodontic devices, Herbst appliances, osteosynthesis devices, expansion screws and spectacle frames.
- 56. An automated bending system for a medical appliance, comprising:a bending machine comprising a first gripping tool and an elongate moveable arm having a first end, a distal end and a second gripping tool mounted to said distal end of said moveable arm, said bending machine adapted for gripping a medical appliance at one location thereof with said first gripping tool and at a second location thereof with said second gripping tool; and a control system operating said moveable arm of said bending machine so as to move said moveable arm relative to said first gripping tool while said first and second gripping tools grip said medical appliance to thereby form a bend in said medical appliance having a desired configuration; wherein said bending machine further comprises a resistive heating system for supplying a current to said medical appliance to thereby heat said medical appliance.
- 57. An automated bending system for a medical appliance, comprising:a bending machine comprising a first gripping tool and an elongate moveable arm having a first end, a distal end and a second gripping tool mounted to said distal end of said moveable arm, said bending machine adapted for gripping a medical appliance at one location thereof with said first gripping tool and at a second location thereof with said second gripping tool; and a control system operating said moveable arm of said bending machine so as to move said moveable arm relative to said first gripping tool while said first and second gripping tools grip said medical appliance to thereby form a bend in said medical appliance having a desired configuration; wherein the desired shape of said medical appliance is obtained from an in-vivo scanning of an anatomical structure of the patient, conversion of the scanning of the anatomical structure into a virtual model, and computer manipulation of either the virtual model or a virtual appliance with respect to the virtual model to thereby derive the desired shape of said medical appliance.
- 58. The system of claim 52, further comprising a second moveable arm having a distal end thereof and wherein said first griping tool is mounted to the distal end of said second moveable arm.
- 59. A method for bending an orthodontic archwire into a desired configuration, comprising:placing said orthodontic archwire into a first gripper tool having a first gripping structure for releasably holding said orthodontic archwire and gripping said archwire; gripping said archwire with a second gripping tool mounted to a free distal portion of an elongate moveable arm, said arm having a proximal portion mounted a distance away from said first gripper tool, said moveable arm constructed such that said free distal portion of said moveable arm is capable of independent movement relative to said first gripper tool about at least two independently controllable axes; providing in said second gripping tool a second gripping structure for releasably holding said orthodontic archwire; using a control system operative of said moveable arm and said first and second gripping tools so as to cause said first and second gripping tools to grip, said orthodontic archwire while said gripping tools are separated from each other and to move said second gripping tool relative to said first gripping tool about at least one of said at least two independently controllable axes to thereby bend said orthodontic archwire a desired amount; and further comprising a temperature measurement system for measuring the temperature of at least one of said gripping tools or said appliance.
