Claims
- 1. A wireless system and protocol for a communications network comprising:
a plurality of communication nodes wherein at least one node is a coordinating node operative to coordinate communication between said plurality of communication nodes and wherein at least one other node is operative to detect a loss of said coordinating node and to function as said coordinating node after detecting the loss.
- 2. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one other node is operative to construct a polling list by monitoring communications sent to said plurality of communication nodes by said coordinating node.
- 3. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one other node is operative to construct a polling list by monitoring poll frames sent to said plurality of communication nodes by said coordinating node.
- 4. The system of claim 1 wherein suitability of the at least one other node to function as said coordinating node is based on how many of said plurality of communication nodes said coordinating node is in communication with.
- 5. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one other node is operative to estimate or determine how many of said plurality of nodes said coordinating node is in communication with by monitoring responses sent from said plurality of nodes in response to receiving communications from said coordinating node.
- 6. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one other node is operative to estimate or determine how many of said plurality of nodes said coordinating node is in communication with by monitoring responses sent from said plurality of nodes in response to receiving poll frames from said coordinating node.
- 7. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one other node is operative to determine how many of said plurality of nodes are controlled by said coordinating node from a traffic indication map received from said coordinating node.
- 8. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one other node determines that said coordinating node is lost by monitoring beacon frames sent from the coordinating node.
- 9. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one other node determines that said coordinating node is lost by monitoring periodic communications sent from the coordinating node.
- 10. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one other node determines that said coordinating node is lost by monitoring poll frames sent from the coordinating node.
- 11. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one other node determines that said coordinating node is lost by monitoring time between poll frames sent from the coordinating node.
- 12. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one other node is operative to function as said coordinating node after expiration of a time period wherein said time period is a function of how many of said plurality of nodes the at least one other node is in communication with.
- 13. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one other node is operative to function as said coordinating node after expiration of a time period wherein said time period is a function of the number of responses sent from said plurality of nodes in response to communications sent by said coordinating node.
- 14. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one other node is operative to detect an internal error state wherein the at least one other node will not attempt to function as said coordinating node when said internal error state is detected.
- 15. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one other node is operative to function as said coordinating node with a portion of said plurality of nodes.
- 16. The system of claim 1 wherein said coordinating node coordinates a contention-free period for said plurality of communication nodes.
- 17. The system of claim 16 wherein said coordinating node provides a collision period for said plurality of communication nodes.
- 18. A wireless system and protocol for a communications network in a vehicular environment comprising:
a plurality of communication nodes disposed on a vehicle wherein at least one node is a coordinating node operative to coordinate communication between said plurality of communication nodes and wherein at least one other node is operative to detect a loss of said coordinating node and to function as said coordinating node after detecting the loss.
