Claims
- 1. A vehicle doorbeam comprising:
a body including a pair of lateral edges, said lateral edges crimped upon themselves to define a groove, said body fabricated of a body material; and a hat-shaped reinforcing insert including a pair of feet each within one of said grooves, whereby said insert is crimped within said body, said insert fabricated of an insert material having a higher strength than said body material.
- 2. The doorbeam of claim 1 wherein said insert is a Martinsite steel.
- 3. The doorbeam of claim 1 wherein said body and said insert include means for physically locating said insert on said body.
- 4. A doorbeam comprising:
a hat-shaped reinforcing insert having a pair of opposite feet, said insert fabricated of a relatively high strength material; and a body having a pair of opposite edges crimped about said opposite feet, said body fabricated of a relatively low strength material.
- 5. The doorbeam of claim 4 wherein said body and said insert includes means for physically locating said insert on said body.
- 6. The doorbeam of claim 4 wherein said body includes two opposing ends, and further comprising an end bracket attached to each of said ends, said end brackets adapted for attachment to a vehicle door frame.
- 7. The doorbeam of claim 4 wherein said insert is fabricated of Martinsite steel.
- 8. The impact beam of claim 4 wherein:
said body includes a pair of opposite ends; and said insert is located between said opposite ends, said body being longer than said insert, said reinforcing beam slidable within said slot upon impact.
- 9. A door impact beam for use in a vehicle door comprising:
a steel base member including a central portion and a pair of opposed ends adapted to be secured to the door, said central portion having a pair of opposing lateral edges between said opposed ends; and a hat-shaped steel reinforcing member stronger than said based member, said reinforcing member spanning the width between said lateral edges of said base member, said reinforcing member including a pair of flanges secured within said lateral edges of said base member, said base member and said reinforcing member having cooperating transverse profiles.
- 10. A method of fabricating a vehicle door beam comprising:
forming a body having lateral edges; forming a hat-shaped insert having lateral edges; placing said insert on said body; and crimping the lateral edges of said body over the lateral edges of said insert.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein said second forming step includes roll-forming.
- 12. The method of claim 11 wherein said first forming step stamping.
- 13. The method of claim 11 wherein said first forming step includes roll-forming.
- 14. The method of claim 10 wherein said first forming step includes forming a registration means for physically cooperating with the hat-shaped insert to facilitate positioning of the insert on the body.
- 15. The method of claim 10 wherein said second forming step includes forming the insert of Martinsite steel.
- 16. The method of claim 10 wherein said first forming step includes forming brackets on the ends of the body, the brackets being adapted for attachment to a vehicle door.
