Claims
- 1. Apparatus for supporting and feeding web material from a roll having a support core to a utilization means that draws the web material thereto, said apparatus comprising;
- a frame,
- means for supporting the frame in a manner to enable the frame to be moved about,
- arm means carrying chuck means for receiving the roll core for support of the web material roll,
- means for supporting the arm means from the frame,
- drive means for engaging the outer periphery of the roll to drive the roll,
- means for supporting the drive means from the frame,
- roller means receiving the web material from the roll for support and guiding of the web material between the roll and utilization means,
- means for supporting the roller means from the frame,
- control means for sensing the draw rate of the web material into the utilization means to in turn control the rate of the drive of the drive means,
- wherein said arm means comprises a pair of arms and further comprising a carriage having separate physically operable means to enable horizontal and vertical motion of said arms,
- wherein said drive means includes belt means having direct surface contact with said web material roll and a drive motor the speed of rotation of which is controlled from said control means,
- wherein said roller means comprises a plurality of rollers and means supporting the rollers from a top of the frame,
- wherein the roller means is supported at the top of the frame to form a web material loop between the roller means and the utilization means,
- wherein said control means includes means for sening the depth of the web material loop to in turn control the drive means to maintain a substantially constant web material loop depth,
- wherein said means for sensing comprises an ultrasonic detector positioned under said web material loop, and
- wherein a support bar is pivotally connected to said frame for holding said detector.
- 2. Apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein said drive means includes a drive motor, the speed of rotation of which is controlled by said control means, said means for supporting the drive means being pivotally connected at one end to said upright support means at a pivot point located at a height over the top of the full web material roll.
- 3. Apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein the roller means comprises a plurality of rollers and means supporting the rollers from a top of the upright support means, the roller means being disposed to form a web material loop between the roller means and the utilization means.
- 4. Apparatus as set forth in claim 3 wherein said control means includes means for sensing the depth of the web material loop to in turn control the drive means to maintain a substantially constant web material loop depth.
- 5. Apparatus for supporting and feeding web material from a roll having a support core to a utilization means that draws the web material thereto, said apparatus comprising;
- a frame means having a base with wheel means for support and movement of the frame so as to make the frame means portable,
- arm means including a pair of spacedly disposed arms,
- chuck means supported at the free ends of said arms for receiving the roll core for support of the web material roll,
- means for supporting said arm means from said frame means with the arms extending therefrom in spaced apart relative parallel position and disposed over the frame means base,
- drive means including a drive belt for engaging the outer periphery of the roll to drive the roll,
- means for supporting the drive means from the frame means including a support member for support of the drive belt and pivotally connected at one end thereof to said frame means at a position over said arms,
- roller means receiving the web material from the roll for support in guiding of the web material between the roll and utilization means,
- upright support means extending from said base,
- means for supporting the roller means at a location from the upright support means and that is over the position of the arms,
- control means for sensing the draw of the web material into the utilization means to in turn control the rate of the drive of the drive means, and
- torque means engaging the web material between the roll and the utilization means to provide tensioning of the web material as taken from the roll.
- 6. Apparatus as set forth in claim 5 wherein said upright support means extends from said base at one side thereof.
- 7. Apparatus as set forth in claim 5 wherein said arms extend from said upright support means.
- 8. Apparatus as set forth in claim 5 wherein said frame base is comprised of a pair of base legs that are disposed substantially in parallel to each other and horizontally and having the wheel means comprised of at least one wheel attached to each leg.
- 9. Apparatus as set forth in claim 5 wherein said means for supporting the arm means comprises a carriage disposed for translation in the frame.
- 10. Apparatus as set forth in claim 9 wherein said base legs and arms are all disposed in a substantially parallel arrangement with the arms being spaced more closely together than the legs, means supporting the carriage in the frame in a manner to permit vertical movement of the carriage to raise and lower the web material roll, a jack means for operating the carriage to raise the web material roll, a release means for operating the carriage to lower the web material roll, said jack means being foot operated including a foot actuating pedal.
- 11. Apparatus for supporting and manipulating web material transferred between a roll having a support core and a utilization means, said apparatus comprising; frame means having a base with wheel means for support and movement of the frame so as to make the frame means portable, and upright support means extending from said base, arm means including a pair of spacedly disposed arms, chuck means supported at the free ends of the arms for receiving a roll core for support of a web material roll, means for supporting the arm means from the frame means with the arms extending therefrom in a spaced apart relative parallel position and disposed over the frame means base, drive means including a drive member for engaging the outer periphery of the web material roll to drive the roll, means for supporting the drive means from the frame means including a support member for support of the drive member, and pivotally connected at one end thereof to the frame means at a position over the arm means, roller means contacting the web material for supporting and guiding the web material between the web material roll and the utilization means, means for supporting the roller means at a location extending from the upright support means and disposed at a position over the arm means, control means for sensing the movement of the web material between the web material roll and the utilization means to, in turn, control the rate of the drive means, and torque means engaging the web material between the web material roll and the utilization means to provide tensioning of the web material as it moves between the web material roll and the utilization means.
- 12. An apparatus as set forth in claim 11 wherein the torque means includes a torque motor having a torque roller that drives the web material connected thereto and a trolley roller that contacts the web material on a side opposite the torque roller.
- 13. Apparatus as set forth in claim 11 wherein said upright support means extends from one side of said base.
- 14. Apparatus as set forth in claim 13 wherein said means for supporting the arm means is disposed from a location on said upright support means.
- 15. Apparatus as set forth in claim 11 wherein said frame base is comprised of a pair of base legs that are disposed substantially in parallel to each other and horizontally and having the wheel means comprised of at least one wheel attached to each leg.
- 16. Apparatus as set forth in claim 14 wherein said arm means comprises a pair of spacedly disposed arms having the web material roll disposed therebetween and each supporting therefrom a chuck for engaging the ends of the roll core.
- 17. Apparatus as set forth in claim 13 wherein said means for supporting the arm means comprises a carriage disposed for translation in the frame.
- 18. Apparatus as set forth in claim 17 including means for supporting the carriage in the frame in a manner to permit vertical movement of the carriage to raise and lower the web material roll.
- 19. Apparatus as set forth in claim 18 including a jack means for operating the carriage to raise the web material roll.
- 20. Apparatus as set forth in claim 19 including a release means for operating the carriage to lower the web material roll.
- 21. Apparatus as set forth in claim 20 wherein said jack means is foot operated including a foot actuating pedal.
- 22. Apparatus as set forth in claim 11 including means for moving the arms horizontally toward and away from each other to respectively engage and disengage the web material roll.
- 23. Apparatus as set forth in claim 11 including means for vertically raising and lowering the web material roll relative to the frame.
- 24. Apparatus as set forth in claim 22 wherein said means for moving the arms comprises a lead screw means that moves the arms equally in unison.
- 25. Apparatus as set forth in claim 15 wherein the base legs are longer than the arms and wherein there are also wheels provided at the base under the upright support means.
- 26. Apparatus as set forth in claim 15 wherein the base legs and arms are all disposed in a substantially parallel arrangement with the arms being spaced more closely together than the legs.
- 27. Apparatus as set forth in claim 11 wherein said drive means includes a drive motor with rotational speed which is controlled by said control means.
- 28. Apparatus as set forth in claim 11 wherein said means for supporting the drive means comprises an elongated support member with one end pivotally connected to the upright support means at a pivot point located at a position over the top of a full web material roll.
- 29. Apparatus as set forth in claim 28 including weight means positioned on the elongated support member at the free end thereof.
- 30. Apparatus as set forth in claim 29 wherein said drive member includes moving drive belt means having direct surface contact with said web material roll.
- 31. Apparatus as set forth in claim 30 including roller means positioned on the elongated member for carrying said drive belt.
- 32. Apparatus as set forth in claim 28 including means for releasably locking the elongated support member in an upper pivoted position out of engagement with the web material roll.
- 33. Apparatus as set forth in claim 11 wherein said roller means comprises a plurality of rollers and means supporting the rollers from the uppermost part of the upright support means.
- 34. Apparatus as set forth in claim 11 wherein the roller means is supported at the top of the upright support means to form a web material loop between the roller means and the utilization means.
- 35. Apparatus as set forth in claim 34 wherein said control means includes means for sensing the depth of the web material loop to, in turn, control the drive means to maintain a substantially constant web material loop depth.
- 36. Apparatus as set forth in claim 35 wherein said means for sensing comprises an ultrasonic detector positioned under said web material loop.
- 37. Apparatus as set forth in claim 36 wherein said control means includes means for sensing the delay period of ultrasonic signals from said ultrasonic detector to provide an analog control signal for said drive means.
- 38. Apparatus as set forth in claim 11 including means, disposed adjacent to the web material between the web material roll and the utilization means, for sensing a break in the web material.
- 39. Apparatus as set forth in claim 11 including means disposed adjacent to the web material, between said roll and said utilization means, for sensing a mill splice in the web material.
- 40. Apparatus for supporting and manipulating web material transferred between a roll having a support core and a utilization means, said apparatus comprising; frame means having a base with wheel means for support and movement of the frame so as to make the frame means portable, and upright support means extending from said base, arm means including a pair of spacedly disposed arms, chuck means supported at the free ends of the arms for receiving a roll core for support of a web material roll, means for supporting the arm means from the frame means with the arms extending therefrom in a spaced apart relative parallel position and disposed over the frame means base, drive means including a drive member for engaging the outer periphery of the web material roll to drive the roll, means for supporting the drive means from the frame means including a support member for support of the drive member, and pivotally connected at one end thereof to the frame means at a position over the arm means, roller means contacting the web material for supporting and guiding the web material between the web material roll and the utilization means, means for supporting the roller means at a location extending from the upright support means and disposed at a position over the arm means, control means for sensing the movement of the web material between the web material roll and the utilization means to, in turn, control the rate of the drive means,
- wherein said roller means comprises a plurality of rollers and means supporting the rollers from the uppermost part of the upright support means,
- wherein the roller means is supported at the top of the upright support means to form a web material loop between the roller means and the utilization means,
- wherein said control means includes means for sensing the depth of the web material loop to, in turn, control the drive means to maintain a substantially constant web material loop depth,
- wherein said means for sensing comprises an ultrasonic detector positioned under said web material loop, and
- wherein a support bar is pivotally connected to said frame for holding said detector.
- 41. Apparatus for supporting and manipulating web material transferred between a roll having a support core and a utilization means, said apparatus comprising; frame means having a base with wheel means for support and movement of the frame so as to make the frame means portable, and upright support means extending from said base, arm means including a pair of spacedly disposed arms, chuck means supported at the free ends of the arms for receiving a roll core for support of a web material roll, means for supporting the arm means from the frame means with the arms extending therefrom in a spaced apart relative parallel position and disposed over the frame means base, drive means including a drive member for engaging the outer periphery of the web material roll to drive the roll, means for supporting the drive means from the frame means including a support member for support of the drive member, and pivotally connected at one end thereof to the frame means at a position over the arm means, roller means contacting the web material for supporting and guiding the web material between the web material roll and the utilization means, means for supporting the roller means at a location extending from the upright support means and disposed at a position over the arm means, control means for sensing the movement of the web material between the web material roll and the utilization means to, in turn, control the rate of the drive means, and a support loop member for receiving the web material and support bar means extending from said upright support means and supporting said support loop member to form a web material loop between said upright support means and said support loop member, said support bar means extending from said upright support means in a direction opposite to the direction that the arms extend from said upright support means.
- 42. An apparatus as set forth in claim 41 wherein the support loop member includes a shoe for supporting the web material and a tensioning means for applying pressure to a side of the web material opposite that contacted by the shoe.
- 43. An apparatus as set forth in claim 42 wherein the tensioning means comprises a brush.
- 44. Apparatus for supporting and feeding web material from a roll having a support core to a utilization means that draws the web material thereto, said apparatus comprising;
- a frame,
- means for supporting the frame in a manner to enable the frame to be moved about,
- arm means carrying chuck means for receiving the roll core for support of the web material roll,
- means for supporting the arm means from the frame,
- drive means for engaging the roll to drive the roll,
- means for supporting the drive means from the frame,
- roller means receiving the web material from the roll for supporting and guiding of the web material between the roll and utilization means,
- means for supporting the roller means from the frame,
- control means for sensing the draw rate of the web material into the utilization means to, in turn, control the rate of the drive of the drive means,
- wherein said arm means comprises a pair of arms and further comprising a carriage having a separate physically operable means to enable horizontal and vertical motion of said arms,
- wherein said drive means includes a drive motor, the speed of rotation of which is controlled from said control means,
- wherein said roller means comprises a plurality of rollers and means supporting the rollers from the top of the frame,
- wherein the roller means is supported at the top of the frame to form a web material loop between the roller means and the utilization means,
- wherein said control means includes means for sensing the depth of the web material loop to, in turn, control the drive means to maintain a substantially constant web material loop depth,
- wherein said means for sensing comprises an ultrasonic detector positioned under said web material loop, and
- wherein a support bar is pivotally connected to said frame for holding said detector.
- 45. Apparatus for supporting and manipulating web material transferred between a roll having a support core and a utilization means, said apparatus comprising:
- frame means having a base with wheel means for support and movement of the frame so as to make the frame means portable, and upright support means extending from said base,
- arm means including a pair of spacedly disposed arms,
- chuck means supported at the free ends of the arms for receiving a roll core for support of a web material roll,
- means for supporting the arm means from the frame means with the arms extending therefrom in a spaced apart relative parallel position and disposed over the frame means base,
- drive means including a drive member for engaging the web material roll to drive the roll,
- means for supporting the drive means from the frame means,
- roller means contacting the web material for supporting and guiding the web material between the web material roll and the utilization means,
- means for supporting the roller means at a location extending from the upright support means and disposed at a position over the arm means,
- control means for sensing the movement of the web material between the web material roll and the utilization means to, in turn, control the rate of the drive means, and
- torque means engaging the web material between the web material roll and the utilization means to provide tensioning of the web material as it moves between the web material roll and the utilization means.
- 46. An apparatus as set forth in claim 45 wherein the torque means includes a torque motor having a torque roller that drives the web material connected thereto and a trolley roller that contacts the web material on a side opposite the torque roller.
- 47. An apparatus as set forth in claim 46 wherein the trolley roller includes means for biasing the trolley roller against the web material.
- 48. Apparatus as set forth in claim 45 wherein said upright support means extends from one side of said base.
- 49. Apparatus as set forth in claim 48 wherein said means for supporting the arm means is disposed from a location on said upright support means.
- 50. Apparatus as set forth in claim 45 wherein said frame base is comprised of a pair of base legs that are disposed substantially parallel to each other and horizontally, and having the wheel means comprised of at least one wheel attached to each leg.
- 51. Apparatus as set forth in claim 49 wherein said arm means comprises a pair of spacably disposed arms having the web material roll disposed therebetween and each supporting therefrom a chuck for engaging the ends of the roll core.
- 52. Apparatus as set forth in claim 48 wherein said means for supporting the arm means comprises a carriage disposed for translation in the frame.
- 53. Apparatus as set forth in claim 52 including means for supporting the carriage in the frame in the manner to permit vertical movement of the carriage to raise and lower the web material roll.
- 54. Apparatus as set forth in claim 53 including a jack means for operating the carriage to raise the web material roll.
- 55. Apparatus as set forth in claim 54 including a release means for operating the carriage to lower the web material roll.
- 56. Apparatus as set forth in claim 55 wherein said jack means is foot operated including a foot actuating pedal.
- 57. Apparatus as set forth in claim 45 including means for moving the arms horizontally toward and away from each other to respectively engage and disengage the web material roll.
- 58. Apparatus as set forth in claim 45 including means for vertically raising and lowering the web material roll relative to the frame.
- 59. Apparatus as set forth in claim 57 wherein said means for moving the arms comprises a lead screw means that moves the arms equally in unison.
- 60. Apparatus as set forth in claim 50 wherein the base legs are longer than the arms and wherein there are also wheels provided at the base under the upright support means.
- 61. Apparatus as set forth in claim 50 wherein the base legs and arms are all disposed in the substantially parallel arrangement with the arms being spaced more closely together than the legs.
- 62. Apparatus as set forth in claim 45 wherein said roller means comprises a plurality of rollers and means supporting the rollers from the uppermost part of the upright support means.
- 63. Apparatus as set forth in claim 45 wherein the roller means is supported at the top of the upright support means to form a web material loop between the roller means and the utilization means.
- 64. Apparatus as set forth in claim 63 wherein said control means includes means for sensing the depth of the web material loop to, in turn, control the drive means to maintain a substantially constant web material loop depth.
- 65. Apparatus as set forth in claim 64 wherein said means for sensing comprises an ultrasonic detector positioned under said web material loop.
- 66. Apparatus as set forth in claim 65 wherein said control means includes means for sensing the delay of ultrasonic signals from said ultrasonic detector to provide an analog control signal for said drive means.
- 67. Apparatus as set forth in claim 45 including means, disposed adjacent to the web material between the web material roll and the utilization means, for sensing a break in the web material.
- 68. Apparatus as set forth in claim 45 including means, disposed adjacent to the web material, between said roll and said utilization means, for sensing a mill splice in the web material.
- 69. Apparatus for supporting and manipulating web material transferred between a roll having a support core and a utilization means, said apparatus comprising:
- frame means having a base with wheel means for support and movement of the frame so as to make the frame means portable, and upright support means extending from the base,
- arm means including a pair of spacedly disposed arms,
- chuck means supported at the free ends of the arms for receiving a roll core for support of a web material roll,
- means for supporting the arm means from the frame means with the arms extending therefrom in a spaced apart relative parallel position and disposed over the frame means base,
- drive means including a drive member for engaging the web material roll to drive the roll,
- means for supporting the drive means from the frame means,
- roller means contacting the web material for supporting and guiding the web material between the web material roll and the utilization means,
- means for supporting the roller means at a location extending from the upright support means and disposed at a position over the arm means,
- control means for sensing the movement of the web material between the web material roll and the utilization means to, in turn, control the rate of the drive means,
- wherein the roller means is supported at the top of the upright support means to form a web material loop between the roller means and the utilization means,
- wherein the control means includes means for sensing the depth of the web material loop to, in turn, control the drive means to maintain a substantially constant web material loop depth,
- wherein the means for sensing comprises an ultrasonic detector positioned under the web material loop, and
- wherein a support bar is pivotally connected to the frame for holding the detector.
- 70. Apparatus for supporting and manipulating web material transferred between a roll having a support core and a utilization means, said apparatus comprising:
- frame means having a base with wheel means for support and movement of the frame so as to make the frame means portable, and upright support means extending from the base,
- arm means including a pair of spacedly disposed arms,
- chuck means supported at the free ends of the arms for receiving a roll core for support of a web material roll,
- means for supporting the arm means from the frame means with the arms extending therefrom in a spaced apart relative parallel position and disposed over the frame means base,
- drive means including a drive member for engaging the web material roll to drive the roll,
- means for supporting the drive means from the frame means,
- roller means contacting the web material for supporting and guiding the web material between the web material roll and the utilization means,
- means for supporting the roller means at a location extending from the upright support means and disposed at a position over the arms means,
- control means for sensing the movement of the web material between the web material roll and the utilization means to, in turn, control the rate of the drive means and,
- a support loop member for receiving the web material and support bar means extending from the upright support means and supporting the support loop member to form a web material loop between the upright support means and the support loop member, the support bar means extending from the upright support means in a direction opposite to the direction that the arms extend from the upright support means.
- 71. An apparatus as set forth in claim 70 wherein the support loop member includes a shoe for supporting the web material and a tensioning means for applying pressure to a side of the web material opposite that contacted by the shoe.
- 72. An apparatus as set forth in claim 71 wherein the tensioning means comprises a brush.
- 73. Apparatus for supporting and manipulating web material transferred between a roll having a support core and a utilization means, said apparatus comprising:
- frame means having a base with wheel means for support and movement of the frame so as to make the frame means portable,
- arm means including a pair of spacedly disposed arms,
- means supported at the free ends of the arms for receiving a roll core for support of a web material roll,
- means for supporting the arm means from the frame means with the arms extending therefrom in a spaced apart relative position and disposed over the frame means base,
- drive means, supported from the frame means, including a drive member for engaging the web material roll to drive the roll,
- means for contacting, supporting and guiding the web material between the web material roll and the utilization means,
- control means for sensing the movement of the web material between the web material roll and the utilization means to, in turn, control the rate of the drive means, and
- a support loop member for receiving the web material and support bar means extending from the frame means and supporting the support loop member to form a web material loop between the frame means and the support loop member, the support bar means extending from the frame means in a direction opposite to the direction that the arms extend from the frame means.
- 74. Apparatus for supporting and manipulating web material transferred between a roll having a support core and a utilization means, said apparatus comprising:
- frame means having a base with wheel means for support and movement of the frame so as to make the frame means portable,
- arm means including a pair of spacedly disposed arms,
- means supported at the free ends of the arms for receiving a roll core for support of a web material roll,
- means for supporting the arm means from the frame means with the arms extending therefrom in a spaced apart relative position and disposed over the frame means base,
- drive means, supported from the frame means, including a drive member for engaging the web material roll to drive the roll,
- means for contacting, supporting and guiding the web material between the web material roll and the utilization means,
- control means for sensing the movement of the web material between the web material roll and the utilization means to, in turn, control the rate of the drive means, and
- torque means engaging the web material between the web material roll and the utilization means to provide tensioning of the web material as it moves between the web material roll and the utilization means.
- 75. Apparatus as set forth in claim 74 wherein the torque means includes a driven torque roller then engages the web material to provide tensioning of the web material, and a further roller that contacts the web material on a side opposite the torque roller.
- 76. Apparatus as set forth in claim 75 wherein set torque means further includes a torque motor for driving the torque roller.
- 77. Apparatus as set forth in claim 76 wherein said frame means includes an upright support member extending from the base, said torque means supported at the top end of the upright support means.
- 78. Apparatus as set forth in claim 74 wherein said torque means includes a torque roller means adapted for drive of the web material in the same direction as caused by said drive means so as to maintain tautness of the web material as it moves between the material roll and the torque means.
- 79. An apparatus as set forth in claim 77 wherein the trolley roller includes means for biasing the trolley against the web material.
- 80. Apparatus for supporting and feeding web material from a roll having a support core to a utilization means that draws the web material thereto, said apparatus comprising;
- a frame,
- means for supporting the frame in a manner to enable the frame to be moved about,
- arm means carrying chuck means for receiving the roll core for support of the web material roll,
- means for supporting the arm means from the frame
- drive means for engaging the roll to drive the roll,
- means for supporting the drive means from the frame,
- roller means receiving the web material from the roll for supporting and guiding of the web material between the roll and utilization means,
- means for supporting the roller means from the frame,
- control means for sensing the draw rate of the web material into the utilization means to, in turn, control the rate of the drive of the drive means,
- torque means engaging the web material between the web material roll and the utilization means to provide tensioning of the web material as it moves between the web material roll and the utilization means,
- wherein the arm means comprises a pair of arms and further comprising a carriage having separate physically operable means to enable horizontal and vertical motion of the arms,
- wherein the drive means includes a drive motor, the speed of rotation of which is controlled from the control means,
- wherein the roller means comprises a plurality of rollers and means supporting the rollers from the top of the frame, and
- wherein the roller means is supported at the top of the frame to form a web material loop between the roller means and the utilization means.
- 81. An apparatus as set forth in claim 80 wherein the torque means includes a torque motor having an torque roller that drives the web material connected thereto and a trolley roller that contacts the web material on a side opposite the torque roller.
- 82. An apparatus as set forth in claim 81 wherein the trolley roller includes means for biasing the trolley roller against the web material.
- 83. Apparatus for supporting and feeding web material from a roll having a support core to a utilization means that draws the web material thereto, said apparatus comprising;
- a frame,
- means for supporting the frame in a manner to enable the frame to be moved about,
- arm means carrying chuck means for receiving the roll core for support of the web material roll,
- means for supporting the arm means from the frame,
- drive means for engaging the roll to drive the roll,
- means for supporting the drive means from the frame,
- roller means receiving the web material from the roll for supporting and guiding of the web material between the roll and utilization means,
- means for supporting the roller means from the frame,
- control means for sensing the draw rate of the web material into the utilization means to, in turn, control the rate of the drive of the drive means,
- a support loop member for receiving the web material and support bar means extending from the upright support means and supporting the support loop member to form a web material loop between the upright support means and the support loop member, the support bar means extending from the upright support means in a direction opposite to the direction that the arms extend from the upright support means,
- wherein the arm means comprises a pair of arms and further comprising a carriage having separate physically operable means to enable horizontal and vertical motion of the arms,
- wherein the drive means includes a drive motor, the speed of rotation of which is controlled from the control means,
- wherein the roller means comprises a plurality of rollers and means supporting the rollers from the top of the frame, and
- wherein the roller means is supported at the top of the frame to form a web material loop between the roller means and the utilization means.
