Claims
- 1. A rolling flat die operable on a blank to produce a threaded element having self-locking threads comprising a flat die moveable in a linear forward direction to engage said blank and form said self-locking threads on said blank, said flat die having a forward section and a rear section, said forward section having a first plurality of first thread-forming parts parallel to one another, each of said first thread-forming parts having a first outer crest end and a first inner root end, said first outer crest ends being spaced from one another by a first die pitch, said first outer crest ends being spaced from said first inner root ends by a first die depth, said rear section having a plurality of second thread-forming parts parallel to one another and parallel to said first thread-forming parts, each of said second thread-forming parts having a second outer crest end and a second inner root end, said second outer crest ends being spaced from one another by a second die pitch, said second outer crest ends being spaced from said second inner root ends by a second die depth, said second die pitch being twice said first die pitch, said second die depth being greater than said first die depth, whereby said forward section of said flat die is operable to form a helical first groove in said blank with said first groove having a first groove pitch and a first groove depth corresponding respectively to said first die pitch and said first die depth, said rear section of said flat die being operable to superimpose a second deeper groove over alternate first grooves such that said second deeper groove defines the flanks of a thread with said second deeper groove having a second groove pitch which is twice that of said first groove pitch and with the outer crest ends of said thread having a self-locking center groove defined by said first groove.
- 2. A rolling flat die according to claim 1 further comprising an intermediate die section between said forward and rear die sections, said intermediate die section having a plurality of intermediate thread-forming parts parallel to one another, each of said intermediate thread-forming parts having an inclined crest end which extends between every other of said first outer crest ends of said first thread-forming parts and each one of said second outer crest ends of said second thread-forming parts, said inclined crest ends being progressively inclined and extending from said first outer crest ends to said second outer crest ends.
- 3. A rolling flat die according to claim 1, wherein said forward section of said flat die has a beginning die part portion, said beginning die part portion having a plurality of beginning thread-forming parts parallel to one another, each of said beginning thread-forming parts having inclined crest ends which extend to each of said first outer crest ends, said inclined crest ends being progressively inclined in approaching said first outer crest ends.
- 4. A rolling flat die according to claim 1, wherein said first thread-forming parts are inverted V-shaped parts having an inverted V-shaped cross-sectional configuration.
- 5. A rolling flat die according to claim 4, wherein said inverted V-shaped parts are contiguous to one another such as to provide a common inner root end of two juxtaposed inverted V-shaped parts.
- 6. A rolling flat die according to claim 4, wherein said inverted V-shaped parts are spaced from one another such that the first inner root ends of two juxtaposed inverted V-shaped parts are spaced from one another.
- 7. A rolling flat die according to claim 1, wherein said second thread-forming parts have an inner and an outer portion, said outer portion having V-shaped side walls, said inner portion having generally parallel side walls.
- 8. A rolling flat die according to claim 1, wherein said flat die has a flat planar base, said first outer crest ends and said second outer crest ends being equally spaced from said flat planar base.
- 9. A rolling flat die according to claim 1, wherein said flat die has a flat planar base, said second outer crest ends being spaced further from said flat planar base than said first outer crest ends.
- 10. A rolling flat die according to claim 4 further comprising heat exchange means in said flat die for effecting a temperature change in said flat die.
- 11. A rolling flat die according to claim 10, wherein said heat exchange means comprises a cooling means.
- 12. A rolling flat die according to claim 10, wherein said heat exchange means comprises a heating means.
