Claims
- 1. A roof tile comprising:an upper surface; a lower surface; a top edge; a bottom edge; an underlocking side edge; an overlocking side edge; a pair of nail holes provided in said upper surface and spaced a first distance from said top edge; a first generally rectangular cut-out portion formed along a portion of said underlocking side edge and extending through said roof tile from said upper surface to said lower surface and from said bottom edge in the direction of said top edge; and a second generally rectangular cut-out portion formed along a portion of said overlocking side edge and extending through said roof tile from said upper surface to said lower surface and from said bottom edge in the direction of said top edge, wherein said first cut-out portion and said second cut-out portion extend substantially the same distance from said bottom edge along said respective side edges.
- 2. A roof tile as claimed in claim 1 wherein said upper surface is substantially planar.
- 3. A roof tile as claimed in claim 1 wherein said lower surface is contoured.
- 4. A roof tile as claimed in claim 1 wherein said pair of nail holes extend through said roof tile between said upper surface and said lower surface.
- 5. A roof tile as claimed in claim 1 wherein said first cut-out portion is formed substantially within an underlock portion formed along said underlocking side edge.
- 6. A roof tile as claimed in claim 1 wherein said second cut-out portion is formed substantially within an overlock portion formed along said overlocking side edge.
- 7. A staggered roof tile layout comprising a plurality of roof tiles arranged in series of tile rows, wherein at least one of said tile rows includes an alternating succession of a first roof tile type and a second roof tile type, and wherein:said first roof tile type comprises an upper surface, a lower surface, a top edge, a bottom edge, an underlocking side edge, an overlocking side edge, a pair of nail holes provided in said upper surface and spaced a first distance from said top edge, and a generally rectangular cut-out portion formed along a portion of one of said underlocking and overlocking side edges and extending through said roof tile from said upper surface to said lower surface and from said bottom edge in the direction of said top edge, wherein said cut-out portion extends a given distance from said bottom edge along said side edge; said second roof tile type comprises an upper surface, a lower surface, a top edge, a bottom edge, an underlocking side edge, an overlocking side edge, a longitudinal tile axis extending from said bottom edge to said top edge, a first set of nail holes provided in said upper surface, spaced a first distance from said top edge, and a second set of nail holes provided in said upper surface, spaced a second distance from said first set of nail holes along said longitudinal tile axis, wherein said second distance is substantially equal to said given distance extended by said cut-out portion; and said underlocking side edge of said first roof tile type engages an overlocking side edge of an adjacent tile of said second roof tile type.
- 8. A roof tile as claimed in claim 7 wherein said first set of nail holes and said second set of nail holes are aligned along said longitudinal tile axis.
- 9. A staggered roof tile layout comprising a plurality of roof tiles arranged in series of tile rows, wherein at least one of said tile rows includes an alternating succession of a first roof tile type and a second roof tile type, and wherein:said first roof tile type comprises an upper surface, a lower surface, a top edge, a bottom edge, an underlocking side edge, and an overlocking side edge; said second roof tile type comprises an upper surface, a lower surface, a top edge, a bottom edge, an underlocking side edge, an overlocking side edge, a pair of nail holes provided in said upper surface and spaced a first distance from said top edge, a first generally rectangular cut-out portion formed along a portion of said underlocking side edge and extending through said roof tile from said upper surface to said lower surface and from said bottom edge in the direction of said top edge; and a second generally rectangular cut-out portion formed along a portion of said overlocking side edge and extending through said roof tile from said upper surface to said lower surface and from said bottom edge in the direction of said top edge, wherein said first cut-out portion and said second cut-out portion extend substantially the same distance from said bottom edge along said respective side edges, said underlocking side edge of said first roof tile type engages an overlocking side edge of an adjacent tile of said second roof tile type; said overlocking side edge of said first roof tile type engages an underlocking side edge of an adjacent tile of said second roof tile type; said underlocking side edge of said second roof tile type engages an overlocking side edge of an adjacent tile of said first roof tile type; said overlocking side edge of said second roof tile type engages an underlocking side edge of an adjacent tile of said first roof tile type; said first cut-out portion of said second roof tile type extends from said bottom edge of said tile of said second type as far as said bottom edge of an adjacent tile of said first type, whereby said bottom edge of said adjacent tile of said first type is substantially aligned with a top-most extent of said first cut-out formed in said tile of said second type and is substantially misaligned relative to said bottom edge of said adjacent tile of said second type; and said second cut-out portion of said second roof tile type extends from said bottom edge of said tile of said second type as far as said bottom edge of an adjacent tile of said first type, whereby said bottom edge of said adjacent tile of said first type is substantially aligned with a top-most extent of said second cut-out formed in said tile of said second type and is substantially misaligned relative to said bottom edge of said adjacent tile of said second type.
- 10. A staggered roof tile layout as claimed in claim 9 wherein said first roof tile type further comprisesa longitudinal tile axis extending from said bottom edge to said top edge, a first set of nail holes provided in said upper surface and spaced a first distance from said top edge, and a second set of nail holes provided in said upper surface and spaced a second distance from said first set of nail holes along said longitudinal tile axis.
- 11. A staggered roof tile layout as claimed in claim 10 wherein said first set of nail holes and said second set of nail holes are separated along said longitudinal tile axis by a distance that is equal to the extent of said first and second cut-out portions along said respective tile edges.
- 12. A staggered roof tile layout as claimed in claim 9 wherein said roof tiles of said first and second types define substantially identical lengths from said respective top edges to said respective bottom edges, such that respective top edges of said first roof tile type and said second roof tile typo are misaligned along said tile row.
- 13. A staggered roof tile layout as claimed in claim 9 wherein said first roof tile type and said second roof tile type define a show surface, wherein each roof tile includes a groove formed in said show surface, and wherein the position of said groove in adjacent roof tiles of said roof tile layout varies.
- 14. A cubed product comprising a plurality of stacked layers of roof tiles of a first structural roof tile type and a second structural roof tile type, wherein each layer of the cubed product includes equal quantities of said first tile type and said second tile type, wherein said cubed product defines a series of columns and rows of said first roof tile type and said second roof tile type, wherein adjacent roof tiles in each of said columns comprise structurally different roof tile types, and wherein adjacent roof tiles in each of said rows comprise structurally different roof tile types.
- 15. A cubed product as claimed in claim 14 wherein said first roof tile type and said second roof tile type define respective show surfaces, wherein each roof tile includes a groove formed in said respective show surfaces, and wherein a position of said groove in a tile of said first roof tile type differs from a position of said groove in a tile of said second roof tile type.
- 16. A cubed product as claimed in claim 14 wherein:said first roof tile type comprises an upper surface, a lower surface, a top edge, a bottom edge, an underlocking side edge, and an overlocking side edge; and said second roof tile type comprises an upper surface, a lower surface, a top edge, a bottom edge, an underlocking side edge, an overlocking side edge, a first generally rectangular cut-out portion formed along a portion of said underlocking side edge and extending through said roof tile from said upper surface to said lower surface and from said bottom edge in the direction of said top edge, and a second generally rectangular cut-out portion formed along a portion of said overlocking side edge and extending through said roof tile from said upper surface to said lower surface and from said bottom edge in the direction of said top edge, wherein said first cut-out portion and said second cut-out portion extend substantially the same distance from said bottom edge along said respective side edges.
- 17. A roof tile comprising:an upper surface; a lower surface; a top edge; a bottom edge; an underlocking side edge; an overlocking side edge; a pair of nail holes provided in said upper surface and spaced a first distance from said top edge; a first cut-out portion formed along a portion of said underlocking side edge and extending through said roof tile from said upper surface to said lower surface and from said bottom edge in the direction of said top edge; and a second cut-out portion formed along a portion of said overlocking side edge and extending through said roof tile from said upper surface to said lower surface and from said bottom edge in the direction of said top edge.
