Claims
- 1. A linear motor comprising:
- a linearly movable output member;
- an electric motor having a rotatable output shaft;
- a cam eccentrically mounted on the output shaft and rotatable therewith, the cam providing a rotary drive force to advance the output member;
- mechanical means, selectively engaged with the cam, for engaging the output member during a predetermined angular portion of each single complete rotation of the cam and transmitting the rotary drive force of the cam to the output member to advance the output member a predetermined linear distance during each single rotation of the cam; and
- means, coupled to the output member, for retaining the output member in an incremental advance position without any movement of the output member in a direction opposite from the direction of advance of the output member so that each predetermined linear distance of advance of the output member is accumulative over successive complete rotations of the cam.
- 2. A linear motor comprising:
- a linearly movable output member;
- an electric motor having a rotatable output shaft;
- a cam eccentrically mounted on the output shaft and rotatable therewith, the cam providing a rotary drive force to advance the output member;
- a first latch means, counted on the output member and pivotal between a first and a second position by selective engagement with the cam, for fixedly engaging the output member when pivoted to the second position during a predetermined angular portion of each single complete rotation of the cam and transmitting the rotary drive force of the cam to the output member to advance the output member a predetermined linear distance during each single rotation of the cam and for allowing free movement of the output member therethrough when in the first position; and
- means, coupled to the output member, for retaining the output member in an incremental advance position.
- 3. The linear motor of claim 2 further comprising:
- biasing means for biasing the first latch means to the first position in which the output member is freely movable with respect to the first latch means.
- 4. A linear motor comprising:
- a linearly movable output member;
- an electric motor having a rotatable output shaft;
- a cam eccentrically mounted on the output shaft and rotatable therewith, the cam providing a rotary drive force to advance the output member;
- mechanical means, selectively engaged with the cam, for engaging the output member during a predetermined angular portion of each single complete rotation of the cam and transmitting the rotary drive force of the cam to the output member to advance the output member a predetermined linear distance during each single rotation of the cam; and
- means, coupled to the output member, for retaining the output member in an incremental advance position, the retaining means including retaining latch means mounted on the output member and movable between first and second positions, for engaging and latching the output member in a fixed position when pivoted to the second position and for allowing free movement of the output member therethrough when in the first position.
- 5. The linear motor of claim 4 further comprising:
- means for biasing the retaining latch means to a second position in which the retaining latch means is fixedly engaged with the output member to prevent movement of the output member in a second direction.
- 6. A linear motor comprising:
- a linearly movable output member;
- first and second spaced latch member coupled to the output member, the first latch member being movable between first and second positions;
- biasing means for biasing the first latch member to the first position in which the output member is freely movable with respect to the first latch member;
- the second latch member being movable between first and second positions;
- means for biasing the second latch member to the second position in which the second latch member is fixedly engaged with the output member preventing movement of the output member in a second direction; and
- selectively energizable means for engaging and moving the first latch member to the second position in which the first latch member is fixedly engaged with the output member and for continuing to move the first latch member, when engaged with the output member, and the output member for a predetermined linear advance distance in the first direction, the selectively energizable means including a motor having a rotatable output shaft and an eccentric cam mounted on the output shaft and providing mechanical drive force directly to the first latch member to advance the output member, the cam being engageable with the first latch member to move the first latch member into engagement with the output member during a predetermined angular portion of each single rotation of the output shaft.
- 7. The linear motor of claim 6 further comprising:
- a yoke slidably mounted about the output member between the first and second latch members and movable between first and second positions; and
- shift biasing means, responsive to the position of the yoke in the first and second positions, for biasing one of the first and second latch members to a first position, independent of the selectively energizable means for engaging and moving the first latch member, in which the one of the first and second latch members is responsive to the selectively energizable means for engaging and moving the first latch member for movement to the second position and for biasing the other of the first and second latch members to the second position into engagement with the output member to prevent movement of the output member in a second direction opposite from the first direction of incremental advance movement of the output member and for biasing, when the yoke is in the second position, the other of first and second latch members to the second position and the one of the first and second latch members to the first position in which the second latch member is responsive to the selectively energizable means for engaging and moving the first latch member for engaging and incrementally advancing the output member in the second direction and the first latch member engages the output member to prevent movement of the output member in a first direction opposite from the second direction.
- 8. The linear motor of claim 7 wherein the shift biasing means comprises:
- a pair of coil springs, each mounted between the yoke and one of the first and second latch members, the pair of springs having a greater biasing force than the means for biasing the first and second latch members to respectively overcome the biasing force of the means for biasing the first and second latch members.
- 9. The linear motor of claim 8 wherein:
- the means for biasing the first and second latch members comprise coil springs, each having a predetermined length, when fully expanded, sufficient to generate substantially no net force on the associated first and second latch members when the other of the first and second latch members is biased to the second position by the shift biasing means.
- 10. The linear motor of claim 3 further comprising:
- means for controlling the position of the yoke between one of the first and second positions.
- 11. The linear motor of claim 10 wherein the controlling means comprises:
- first and second, oppositely arranged, unidirectional means, connected to the output shaft of the motor and rotatable therewith, for moving the yoke to one of the first and second positions upon rotation of the output shaft in one of two opposed directions;
- the first unidirectional means drivingly engaging the yoke upon rotation of the output shaft of the motor only in a first direction to move the yoke to the first position; and
- the second unidirectional means drivingly engaging the yoke upon rotation of the output shaft of the motor only in a second direction opposite to the first direction to move the yoke to the second position.
- 12. The linear motor of claim 11 wherein the first and second unidirectional means each comprises:
- a cam mounted on the output shaft of the motor and having a spiral-shaped exterior surface;
- a lobe formed on the cam and extending radially outward from the exterior surface and forming a detent with the exterior surface;
- a drive pin mounted in the yoke; and
- means for biasing the drive pin normally outward from the yoke for engagement with the detent of the cam upon rotation of the cam in only one of two opposed direction.
- 13. A linear motor comprising:
- a linear movable output member;
- an electric motor having a rotatable output shaft;
- a cam eccentrically mounted on the output shaft and rotatable therewith, the cam providing a rotary drive force to advance the output member;
- mechanical means, selectively engaged with the cam, for engaging the output member during a predetermined angular portion of each single complete rotation of the cam and transmitting the rotary drive force of the cam to the output member to advance the output member a predetermined linear distance during each single rotation of the cam;
- an electromagnetic solenoid formed of a core and a coil, a plunger movably disposed within the core and movable from a first extended position with respect to the core and a second position in which the plunger is drawn into the core by a magnetic attraction with the core when electric current is applied to the coil, the plunger being movable a predetermined distance from the first to the second position; and
- unidirectional latch means, coupled to the output member and engaged by the plunger, when the plunger is in the second position, for engaging the output member and preventing the output member from moving in a direction opposite from the direction of incremental advance of the output member such that each predetermined linear distance of advance of the output member is accumulative over successive complete rotations of the cam.
