Claims
- 1. An elastomeric packer for use in rotary blowout preventers, comprising:
- (a) a tubular elastomeric sleeve mounted within a rotary blowout preventer for rotational movement about a vertical axis, wherein a drill pipe is longitudinally received within said sleeve and sealably engaged by an inner surface thereof for sliding vertical movement therethrough; and
- (b) a plurality of grippers embedded within said tubular sleeve and extending flush with said inner surface thereof to contact said drill pipe and frictionally engage the same, wherein said grippers have a coefficient of friction sufficient to secure said sleeve to said drill pipe for concomitant rotation therewith.
- 2. An elastomeric packer as described in claim 1 wherein said sleeve has defined therein a plurality of inwardly opening receptacles in which said plurality of grippers are received and secured.
- 3. An elastomeric packer as described in claim 2 wherein each said gripper comprises:
- (a) an elongated portion extending within said sleeve from said inner surface thereof and having an outer face substantially flush therewith; and
- (b) an enlarged diameter portion integrally connected to said elongated portion opposite said outer face, wherein said sleeve is molded about each said gripper to secure said gripper therein.
- 4. An elastomeric packer as described in claim 1 further comprising means connected to said rotary blowout preventer and encircling said elastomeric sleeve for urging said sleeve inwardly to contact said drill pipe in sealing contact therewith and for urging said grippers in contact with said drill pipe with sufficient force to engage the drill pipe for concomitant rotation therewith.
- 5. An elastomeric packer as described in claim 1 wherein said grippers are more rigid than said elastomeric sleeve.
- 6. An elastomeric packer as described in claim 1 wherein grippers have a greater coefficient of friction than said elastomeric sleeve.
- 7. An annular packer for use in a rotary blowout preventer, comprising an elastomeric sleeve mounted within said blowout preventer for rotary movement about a vertical axis and having a plurality of hardened grippers mounted within said sleeve and extending flush with an inner surface thereof, wherein a drill pipe received within said sleeve is frictionally engaged by said grippers to facilitate concomitant rotation of said sleeve therewith without preventing longitudinal movement of said drill pipe through said sleeve.
- 8. An annular packer as described in claim 7 wherein said grippers are detachably and reattachably connected to said elastomeric sleeve.
- 9. A non-slip packer for rotary blowout preventers, comprising an elastomeric sleeve rotably mounted within a blowout preventer for sealably engaging a drill pipe extending therethrough, wherein said sleeve has means connected thereto for gripping said drill pipe and securing said sleeve thereto for concomitant rotary motion therewith without preventing longitudinal movement of said drill pipe through said sleeve.
- 10. A non-slip packer as described in claim 9 wherein said gripping means comprises a plurality of hardened grippers detachably and reattachably connected to said sleeve and extending flush with an inner surface thereof, wherein said grippers are hydraulically urged in contact with said sleeve by means connected to said rotary blowout preventer for urging said elastomeric sleeve in sealing contact with said drill pipe.
- 11. A non-slip packer as described in claim 10 wherein said grippers have a substantially planar outer surface to facilitate maximum frictional contact with said drill pipe.
- 12. A non-slip packer as described in claim 10 wherein said grippers are more rigid and less susceptible to wear than said elastomeric sleeve.
- 13. A non-slip packer as described in claim 10 wherein said urging means is connected to said rotary blowout preventer and encircles said sleeve to urge said sleeve and said grippers in contact with said drill pipe, wherein the combined frictional forces exerted by said plurality of grippers on said drill pipe is greater than the frictional force exerted by said elastomeric sleeve.
- 14. A non-slip packer as described in claim 10 wherein said inner surface has a uniform diameter.
- 15. A non-slip packer as described in claim 10 wherein said grippers are a molded mixture of epoxy resin and selected granular material.
- 16. A non-slip packer as described in claim 10 wherein said grippers are constructed of a ferrous based metal.
