Claims
- 1. A sprinkler comprising:
a nozzle housing assembly having a plurality of nozzles fixed around an inner circumference in the nozzle housing assembly; and a rotatable cylindrical sleeve disposed around the nozzle housing assembly and having one or more openings to allow a corresponding number of selected nozzles among the plurality of nozzles to each discharge a stream for irrigation away from the nozzle housing assembly.
- 2. A sprinkler as set forth in claim 1, wherein the nozzle housing assembly is rotationally driven for distributing water around the nozzle housing assembly.
- 3. A sprinkler as set forth in claim 1, wherein
said nozzle housing assembly has a top thereon, and said cylindrical sleeve includes a device operable from the top of said nozzle housing assembly for rotating said cylindrical sleeve.
- 4. A sprinkler as set forth in claim 3, wherein said cylindrical sleeve further includes an internal ring gear, and wherein said device is a drive gear connected to said ring gear to actuate said ring gear.
- 5. A rotary drive sprinkler comprising:
a sprinkler housing for receiving a supply of water; and a nozzle assembly for directing water from the sprinkler housing, said nozzle assembly having
a rotatable outer cylindrical housing sleeve with at least one nozzle stream opening formed therein, and an internal nozzle housing having a plurality of nozzles therearound, wherein said outer cylindrical housing sleeve can be turned with respect to said internal nozzle housing to align a selected nozzle with a nozzle stream opening, said plurality of nozzles being circumferentially aligned with said at least one nozzle stream opening so that each nozzle can be selected for operation.
- 6. A rotary drive sprinkler as set forth in claim 5, said internal nozzle housing having
a cylindrical outer surface, a plurality of openings provided around said internal nozzle housing, and a flexible nozzle strip having the plurality of nozzles therearound, said flexible nozzle strip being wrapped around said internal nozzle housing with each of the nozzles being aligned with a respective opening in said internal nozzle housing, and said outer cylindrical housing sleeve being in contact with said flexible nozzle strip.
- 7. A rotary drive sprinkler as set forth in claim 6, wherein each of said nozzles on said flexible nozzle strip extends radially outwardly into a respective opening around the internal nozzle housing.
- 8. A rotary drive sprinkler as set forth in claim 6, further comprising an indicator on a top surface of the nozzle assembly indicating the nozzle selected for directing water from the sprinkler.
- 9. A rotary drive sprinkler as set forth in claim 6, wherein said outer cylindrical housing sleeve has gear teeth formed thereon, said sprinkler further comprising a drive gear mounted in said nozzle assembly for meshing with said gear teeth to rotate said outer cylindrical housing sleeve.
- 10. A rotary drive sprinkler as set forth in claim 5, wherein
said nozzle assembly has a top thereon, and said rotatable outer cylindrical housing sleeve includes
a cylindrical member extending upwardly to the top of the nozzle assembly, and a nozzle identification pointer to indicate which of the plurality of nozzles is in communication with the at least one nozzle stream opening.
- 11. A rotary drive sprinkler as set forth in claim 10, further comprising a nozzle selector shaft which is accessible from the top of the nozzle assembly for turning said rotatable outer cylindrical housing sleeve from within the nozzle housing to select a nozzle.
- 12. A rotary drive sprinkler as set forth in claim 11, wherein said nozzle assembly further includes an arc set cylindrical member.
- 13. A rotary drive sprinkler as set forth in claim 5, further comprising a stream breakup screw in the nozzle assembly to shorten the range of water directed from the sprinkler and to increase close-in water fallout.
- 14. A rotary driver sprinkler as set forth in claim 5, wherein said internal nozzle housing includes an internal water flow chamber for providing water flow to each nozzle.
- 15. A sprinkler as set forth in claim 1, further comprising a stream deflector located in said nozzle housing assembly to be movable into a selected nozzle to deflect the discharged stream downwardly to produce a lower nozzle stream exit angle.
- 16. A sprinkler comprising:
a nozzle housing having a flow path for directing water therefrom; a rotationally fixed group of nozzles in the nozzle housing flow path and circumferentially spaced around the nozzle housing; and a rotationally mounted cylindrical sleeve with one or more exit openings around the outside of the nozzle housing assembly for selecting a desired nozzle.
- 17. A sprinkler as set forth in claim 16, wherein the nozzle housing is rotationally driven.
- 18. A sprinkler as set forth in claim 17, wherein said nozzle housing can be rotated so that a stream of water exiting the desired nozzle covers a 360° arc of coverage.
- 19. A rotary drive sprinkler as set forth in claim 16, further comprising a nozzle deflection cam operated by a rotational shaft for deflecting a selected nozzle to obtain a stream angle change for the selected nozzle.
- 20. A rotary drive sprinkler comprising:
a sprinkler housing for receiving a supply of water; and a nozzle assembly for directing water therefrom, said nozzle assembly including
an outer cylindrical housing having a plurality of nozzle stream openings and a nozzle placed in each nozzle stream opening, wherein said outer cylindrical housing is rotatable to align a selected nozzle with an internal flow supply received in the sprinkler housing.
- 21. A rotary drive sprinkler comprising:
a sprinkler housing for receiving a supply of water; and a nozzle assembly for directing water therefrom, said nozzle assembly including
a plurality of nozzles around an outside circumference thereof, an internal flow connection passage providing a flow connection between the sprinkler housing and the plurality of nozzles, and a shaft accessible from the outside of said nozzle housing for rotating said nozzle assembly relative to said flow connection passage to align a selected nozzle with said flow connection passage.
- 22. A rotary drive sprinkler as set forth in claim 21, wherein the nozzle assembly further includes an indicator visible from the outside of said nozzle assembly to indicate which nozzle is selected for connection to the flow connection passage.
- 23. A rotary drive sprinkler comprising:
a sprinkler housing for receiving a supply of water; and a nozzle assembly for directing water therefrom, said nozzle assembly including
a rotatable inner cylindrical housing having a plurality of nozzles provided therearound, and an outer housing around said rotatable inner cylindrical housing having at least one nozzle stream opening formed therein, wherein said inner cylindrical housing can be turned with respect to said outer housing to align a selected nozzle with a nozzle stream opening, and wherein said plurality of nozzles are circumferentially aligned with said nozzle stream opening so that each nozzle can be selected for operation.
- 24. A rotating nozzle sprinkler comprising:
a plurality of rotationally selectable nozzles circumferentially spaced around the sprinkler; and a detent arm for generating a tactile indicator to aid in nozzle selection and/or to hold the selected nozzle in a proper rotational position after selection.
- 25. A rotary drive sprinkler including a nozzle housing assembly which comprises:
a plurality of rotationally selectable and circumferentially spaced nozzles around the nozzle housing assembly; a nozzle stream opening formed in the nozzle housing assembly through which a fluid stream exits the sprinkler; a nozzle deflection cam for controllably deflecting a selected one of the plurality of nozzles to obtain a desired stream angle exiting the nozzle stream opening; and a stream angle indicator having indices to set an increase or decrease in stream angle and an actual stream exit angle resulting from the setting.
- 26. A rotary drive sprinkler as set forth in claim 25, further comprising an indicator on the nozzle housing assembly to indicate which of the plurality of nozzles has been selected.
- 27. A rotary drive sprinkler as set forth in claim 25, wherein said plurality of circumferentially spaced nozzles are formed on a flexible strip, said flexible strip being placed in said nozzle housing assembly so that a selected nozzle is positioned in the nozzle stream opening.
- 28. A rotary drive sprinkler as set forth in claim 27, wherein said nozzle housing assembly further comprises
an upper internal ring gear for turning said flexible nozzle strip; and a rotor actuating member accessible from the top of said nozzle housing assembly for turning said internal ring gear.
- 29. A rotary drive sprinkler as set forth in claim 27, further comprising a mechanical connection between said flexible strip and the outside of the nozzle assembly to enable a user to move the flexible strip to a desired nozzle position.
- 30. A rotary drive sprinkler comprising:
a sprinkler housing for receiving a supply of water; and a nozzle assembly for directing water therefrom, said nozzle assembly including
an outer cylindrical nozzle housing having one or more nozzle openings, an internal multiple nozzle selection member for being rotated to align a specific nozzle with an opening in the nozzle housing.
- 31. A rotary drive sprinkler comprising a nozzle housing assembly having a top surface, and a nozzle selection indicator and a nozzle stream angle setting indicator provided on said top area of said nozzle housing assembly.
- 32. A sprinkler as set forth in claim 31, wherein the nozzle housing assembly further includes an arc setting indicator provided on said top area of said nozzle housing assembly.
- 33. A nozzle unit for a sprinkler comprising:
a nozzle made of a flexible material and defining a nozzle passage therethrough; and a flexible diaphragm area surrounding the nozzle such that the nozzle passage can be deflected by flexing the diaphragm area to adjust a nozzle stream angle and an elevation angle of a flow exiting the sprinkler.
- 34. A nozzle unit for a sprinkler comprising a nozzle fabricated from a flexible material, and a deflectable portion around the nozzle and made of a flexible material, wherein the deflectable portion has a lesser thickness than that of the nozzle, and wherein the deflectable portion is variably configured radially around the nozzle.
- 35. A nozzle strip comprising:
a flexible strip which can be wrapped circumferentially around a sprinkler nozzle housing; a plurality of nozzles molded along the strip so as to be arranged circumferentially spaced around the sprinkler nozzle housing when the strip is wrapped around the housing, wherein each nozzle is surrounded on the strip by a diaphragm area having a thickness less than that of the flexible strip, such that each of the nozzles can be deflected by the flexing movement of the respective diaphragm area.
- 36. A nozzle strip as set forth in claim 35, wherein said flexible strip is formed of a plurality of smaller strips.
- 37. A nozzle strip as set forth in claim 36, wherein each of the plurality of flexible strips is mutually differently colored from the other flexible strips to represent a desired flow characteristic.
