Claims
- 1. A rotary cutter for cutting gears, couplings and the like, said cutter comprising:
- a cutter head, said cutter head being disc-shaped and having an outer edge surface and first and second sides, said cutter head including at least a central opening through which an attachment means may pass for securing said rotary cutter to a cutting machine, said central opening encircling an axis of rotation, said first side including a projecting portion encircling said central opening, said projecting portion having an inner surface and an outer surface with at least said outer surface being concentric with said axis,
- a ball and cage arrangement extending about and in contact with said outer surface of said projecting portion, said arrangement being concentric with said axis,
- a disc-shaped centering disc having a tapered outer edge surface concentric with said axis, said centering disc attached to said cutter head and located adjacent said first side of said cutter head, said centering disc having at least a central opening, said centering disc having a circular recessed region comprising a circular inner recess wall surface with said circular inner recess wall surface located concentric with said axis and about and in an interference fit with said ball and cage arrangement whereby said centering disc is centered on said cutter head,
- a cutter ring secured to said cutter head and comprising at least one stock removing surface integral with a circular base portion, said cutter ring having a base surface, a tapered inside ring surface and an outside ring surface, said cutter ring base surface located adjacent said first side of said cutter head near said outer edge surface, said tapered edge surface of said centering disc abutting against and complementary with said tapered inside ring surface of said cutter ring, whereby said cutter ring is centered on said cutter head thus enabling said cutter ring to rotate true about said axis.
- 2. The rotary cutter of claim 1 further comprising said tapered edge surface of said centering disc and said tapered inside surface of said cutter ring being tapered outwardly in a direction toward said cutter head.
- 3. The rotary cutter of claim 2 further including resilient means located between said cutter head and said centering disc thereby urging said centering disc spaced from said cutter head.
- 4. The rotary cutter of claim 3 wherein said resilient means comprise springs.
- 5. The rotary cutter of claim 4 wherein said centering disc is attached to said cutter head by at least one screw extending from said centering disc through said springs and threadably engaging said cutter head.
- 6. The rotary cutter of claim 2 wherein said cutter ring is secured to said cutter head by at least one screw extending through said cutter head and threadably engaging said base portion of said cutter ring.
- 7. The rotary cutter of claim 1 wherein said cutter ring is secured to said cutter head by at least one screw extending through said cutter head and threadably engaging said base portion of said cutter ring.
- 8. The rotary cutter of claim 1 wherein said cutter ring further comprises a plurality of mounting tabs extending radially outwardly from said outside ring surface, said tabs comprising a substantially planar upper surface, said cutter ring being secured to said cutter head by securing means engaging said tabs and said cutter head.
- 9. The rotary cutter of claim 8 wherein said substantially planar upper surface extends substantially parallel to said base surface of said cutter ring.
- 10. The rotary cutter of claim 8 wherein said substantially planar upper surface is angularly inclined with respect to said base surface of said cutter ring.
- 11. The rotary cutter of claim 8 further comprising a bore through each of said tabs with each of said tabs being secured to said cutter head by securing means passing through each of said bores and engaging said cutter head.
- 12. The rotary cutter of claim 11 wherein said securing means comprises screws threadably engaging said cutter head.
- 13. The rotary cutter of claim 8 wherein said securing means comprises a plurality of clamps attached to and spaced about said cutter head with each one of said plurality of clamps corresponding to and engaging each one of said plurality of tabs for securing said cutter ring to said cutter head.
- 14. The rotary cutter of claim 8 wherein said securing means comprises a clamping ring extending about said cutter ring and contacting said tabs, said clamping ring being secured to said cutter head thereby securing said cutter ring to said cutter head.
- 15. The rotary cutter of claim 14 wherein said clamping ring includes screws extending therethrough and threadably engaging said cutter head for securing said clamping ring to said cutter head.
- 16. The rotary cutter of claim 1 wherein said cutter ring further comprises a continuous circumferential flange extending radially outwardly from said outside ring surface, said flange comprising a substantially planar upper surface, said cutter ring being secured to said cutter head by securing means engaging said flange and said cutter head.
- 17. The rotary cutter of claim 16 wherein said substantially planar upper surface extends substantially parallel to said base surface of said cutter ring.
- 18. The rotary cutter of claim 16 wherein said substantially planar upper surface is angularly inclined with respect to said base surface of said cutter ring.
- 19. The rotary cutter of claim 16 further comprising a plurality of bores through said flange with said flange being secured to said cutter head by securing means passing through each of said bores and engaging said cutter head.
- 20. The rotary cutter of claim 19 wherein said securing means comprises screws threadably engaging said cutter head.
- 21. The rotary cutter of claim 16 wherein said securing means comprises a plurality of clamps attached to and spaced about said cutter head with each one of said plurality of clamps engaging said flange for securing said cutter ring to said cutter head.
- 22. The rotary cutter of claim 16 wherein said securing means comprises a clamping ring extending about said cutter ring and contacting said flange, said clamping ring being secured to said cutter head thereby securing said cutter ring to said cutter head.
- 23. The rotary cutter of claim 22 wherein said clamping ring includes screws extending therethrough and threadably engaging said cutter head for securing said clamping ring to said cutter head.
- 24. The rotary cutter of claim 1 wherein said cutter ring is secured to said cutter head by at least one screw extending angularly through said circular base portion and threadably engaging said cutter head.
- 25. The rotary cutter of claim 2 further including at least one key located in one of said first side of said cutter head or said cutter ring base surface and at least one keyway located in the other of said first side of said cutter head or said cutter ring base surface.
- 26. The rotary cutter of claim 2 wherein the portion of the cage of said ball and cage arrangement located between the balls and the centering disc is longer than the portion of the cage located between the balls and the cutter head whereby excessive creeping of the ball and cage arrangement along said projecting portion and loss of contact therewith is prevented.
- 27. The rotary cutter of claim 1 further comprising said tapered edge surface of said centering disc and said tapered inside ring surface being tapered inwardly in a direction toward said cutter head.
- 28. The rotary cutter of claim 27 wherein said centering disc is attached to said cutter head by attachment means extending through said centering disc and engaging said cutter head, said attachment means including a head portion and a resilient means located between said head portion and said centering disc, said resilient means urging said centering means toward said cutter head whereby the inwardly tapering edge surface of said centering disc abuts against and is complementary with the surface of the inwardly tapering inside ring surface of said cutter ring thereby centering said cutter ring on said cutter head.
- 29. The rotary cutter of claim 28 further comprising means to secure said cutter ring to said cutter head, said means comprising at least one screw extending through said centering disc and at least into said cutter head.
- 30. The rotary cutter of claim 29 wherein said means to secure comprises a screw extending along said axis for threaded engagement into a spindle of a cutting machine, said screw mounting said rotary cutter to said machine and securing said cutter ring to said cutter head.
- 31. The rotary cutter of claim 1 further including at least one key located in one of said first side of said cutter head or said cutter ring base surface and at least one keyway located in the other of said first side of said cutter head or said cutter ring base surface.
- 32. The rotary cutter of claim 1 further comprising means to prevent removal of said ball and cage arrangement from about said projecting portion during disassembly of said rotary cutter.
- 33. The rotary cutter of claim 1 further comprising means to prevent removal of said ball and cage arrangement from within said centering disc during disassembly of said rotary cutter.
- 34. The rotary cutter of claim 1 wherein the portion of the cage of said ball and cage arrangement located between the balls and the centering disc is longer than the portion of the cage located between the balls and the cutter head whereby excessive creeping of the ball and cage arrangement along said projecting portion and loss of contact therewith is prevented.
- 35. The rotary cutter of claim 1 further comprising said first side and said second side being parallel to one another and perpendicular to said axis.
- 36. The rotary cutter of claim 35 further including said outer surface of said projecting portion being perpendicular to said first side.
- 37. A rotary cutter for cutting gears, couplings and the like, said cutter comprising:
- a disc-shaped cutter head, said cutter head having an axis of rotation and at least one opening therethrough,
- a ball and cage arrangement located on said cutter head about and concentric with said axis,
- a disc-shaped centering disc located in an interference fit about said ball and cage arrangement, said centering disc having at least one opening aligned with said at least one opening in said cutter head, said centering disc having a tapered outer edge surface concentric with said axis,
- a cutter ring comprising at least one stock removing surface integral with a circular base portion, said base portion having a base surface located adjacent said centering disc and a tapered inside ring surface, said tapered outer edge surface of said centering disc abutting against and complementary with said tapered inside ring surface of said cutter ring whereby said cutter ring is centered on said cutter head thereby enabling said cutter ring to rotate true about said axis.
- 38. The rotary cutter of claim 37 further comprising said tapered edge surface of said centering disc and said tapered inside surface of said cutter ring being tapered outwardly in a direction toward said cutter head.
- 39. The rotary cutter of claim 38 further including resilient means located between said cutter head and said centering disc thereby urging said centering disc spaced from said cutter head.
- 40. The rotary cutter of claim 37 further comprising said tapered edge surface of said centering disc and said tapered inside surface of said cutter ring being tapered inwardly in a direction toward said cutter head.
- 41. A rotary cutter for cutting gears, couplings and the like, said cutter comprising:
- a cutter head, said cutter head being disc-shaped and having an outer edge surface and parallel first and second sides, said cutter head including at least a central opening through which an attachment means may pass for securing said rotary cutter to a cutting machine, said central opening being concentric with an axis of rotation, said first side including a projecting portion encircling said central opening, said projecting portion having an inner surface and an outer surface with at least said outer surface being concentric with said axis and perpendicular to said first side,
- a ball and cage arrangement extending about and in contact with said outer surface of said projecting portion, said arrangement being concentric with said axis,
- a disc-shaped centering disc having an outer edge surface concentric with said axis, said outer edge surface being tapered outwardly in a direction toward said cutter head, said centering disc attached to said cutter head and located adjacent said first side of said cutter head, said centering disc having a central opening concentric with said cutter axis, said centering disc having a circular recessed region comprising a circular inner recess wall surface with said circular inner recess wall surface located concentric with said axis and about and in an interference fit with said ball and cage arrangement whereby said centering disc is centered on said cutter head,
- resilient means located between said centering disc and said cutter head thereby urging said centering disc spaced from said cutter head,
- a cutter ring secured to said cutter head and comprising at least one stock removing surface integral with a circular base portion, said base portion having a base surface, a inside ring surface tapered outwardly in a direction toward said cutter head and an outside ring surface, said cutter ring base surface located adjacent said first side of said cutter head near said outer edge surface, said tapered edge surface of said centering disc abutting against and complementary with said tapered inside ring surface of said cutter ring, whereby said cutter ring is centered on said cutter head thus enabling said cutter ring to rotate true about said axis.
- 42. A mounting assembly for a cutter ring, said mounting assembly and said cutter ring comprising, when assembled, a rotary cutter for cutting gears, shafts and the like, said mounting assembly comprising:
- a cutter head, said cutter head being disc-shaped and having an outer edge surface and first and second sides, said cutter head including at least a central opening through which an attachment means may pass for securing said rotary cutter to a cutting machine, said central opening encircling an axis of rotation, said first side including a projecting portion encircling said central opening, said projecting portion having an inner surface and an outer surface with at least said outer surface being concentric with said axis,
- a ball and cage arrangement extending about and in contact with said outer surface of said projecting portion, said arrangement being concentric with said axis,
- a disc-shaped centering disc having a tapered outer edge surface concentric with said axis, said centering disc attached to said cutter head and located adjacent said first side of said cutter head, said centering disc having at least a central opening, said centering disc having a circular recessed region comprising a circular inner recess wall surface with said circular inner recess wall surface located concentric with said axis and about and in an interference fit with said ball and cage arrangement whereby said centering disc is centered on said cutter head.
- 43. The mounting assembly of claim 42 wherein said tapered outer edge surface tapers outwardly in a direction toward said cutter head.
- 44. The mounting assembly of claim 42 wherein said tapered outer edge surface tapers inwardly in a direction toward said cutter head.
