Claims
- 1. A method of bonding an elastomeric substrate surface to a metallic substrate surface comprising autodepositing a coating onto the metallic substrate surface, contacting the elastomeric substrate surface with the coating on the metallic substrate surface, and forming a bond between the elastomeric substrate surface and the metallic substrate surface.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the coating is comprised of epoxy resin.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the elastomeric substrate surface is obtained by curing a thermoseftable rubber formulation, said curing being performed simultaneously with the bond forming step.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein said autodepositing is accomplished by contacting the metallic substrate surface with an autodeposition bath composition comprising
(a) at least one epoxy resin; (b) at least one accelerator; and (c) at least one cross-linker.
- 5. The method of claim 4 wherein the autodeposition bath composition is additionally comprised of at least one coalescing agent.
- 6. The method of claim 4 wherein the autodeposition bath composition is additionally comprised of at least one flow control additive.
- 7. The method of claim 4 wherein at least one epoxy resin is a glycidyl ether of a polyhydric phenol.
- 8. The method of claim 4 wherein at least one epoxy resin is a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and at least one epoxy resin is a flexibilizing epoxy resin.
- 9. The method of claim 4 wherein at least one accelerator is selected from the group consisting of acids, oxodizing agents and complexing agents which are capable of causing the dissolution of active metals from the metallic substrate surface.
- 10. The method of claim 4 wherein at least one cross-linker is a molecule containing at least two blocked isocyanate groups.
- 11. The method of claim 4 wherein said at least one epoxy resin and said at least one cross-linker are present in emulsified form.
- 12. A method of forming a rubber-metal composite without use of an adhesive comprising autodepositing a coating comprised of epoxy resin onto a metallic substrate surface, curing said autodeposited coating, bringing the autodeposited coating into contact with a thermoseftable rubber formulation, and curing the thermoseftable rubber formulation.
- 13. A rubber-metal composite comprised of a rubber component, a metal component, and a cured layer of an autodeposited coating between and directly contacting both the rubber component and the metal component.
- 14. The rubber-metal composite of claim 13 wherein said rubber-metal composite is characterized by the absence of an adhesive layer other than the cured layer of the autodeposited coating.
