Claims
- 1. A running tool for conveying and setting a plug within a generally tubular member, the plug including first and second members, and the plug being settable by applying an axially directed force to the first member, applying an oppositely directed force to the second member, and thereby displacing the first member a predetermined axial distance relative to the second member, the running tool comprising:
- first and second portions, the first and second portions being axially slidably disposed relative to each other, and wherein:
- the first portion includes a first engagement structure, the first engagement structure being releasably engageable with the first member; and
- the second portion includes a second engagement structure, the second engagement structure being releasably engageable with the second member, and a first surface formed thereon, the first surface contacting the first engagement structure to dispose the first engagement structure in engagement with the first member when the second portion is in a first axial position with respect to the first portion, and the first surface permitting the first engagement structure to disengage from the first member when the second portion is in a second axial position with respect to the first portion.
- 2. The running tool according to claim 1, wherein the second portion further includes a third engagement structure, the third engagement structure being releasably engageable with the second portion.
- 3. The running tool according to claim 2, wherein the second portion further includes a releasing member axially slidingly disposed relative to the second engagement structure, the releasing member having a second surface formed thereon, the second surface being capable of contacting the second engagement structure to dispose the second engagement structure in engagement with the second member when the releasing member is in a third axial position with respect to the remainder of the second portion, and the second surface being capable of permitting the second engagement structure to disengage from the second member when the releasing member is in a fourth axial position with respect to the remainder of the second portion.
- 4. The running tool according to claim 1, wherein one of the first and second portions further includes a piston slidingly and sealingly disposed in a piston bore formed in the other of the first and second portions.
- 5. The running tool according to claim 4, wherein the piston is capable of displacing the first portion relative to the second portion in response to fluid pressure applied to the piston.
- 6. The running tool according to claim 4, wherein the one of the first and second portions further includes a plurality of the pistons, and the other of the first and second portions includes a plurality of the piston bores.
- 7. The running tool according to claim 1, wherein one of the first and second portions further includes an indicator member, the indicator member being capable of being displaced relative to the remainder of the one of the first and second portions when the first member is displaced relative to the second member to set the plug, whereby setting of the plug is capable of being indicated by displacement of the indicator member relative to the remainder of the one of the first and second portions.
- 8. The running tool according to claim 1, wherein the first portion further includes a piston sealingly disposable within a piston bore formed in the second portion, and wherein the piston is capable of disengaging sealingly from the piston bore when fluid pressure within the piston bore exceeds fluid pressure external to the second portion.
- 9. The running tool according to claim 1, wherein the second portion further includes a third engagement member, the third engagement member being capable of engaging the first portion to prevent displacement of the first portion relative to the second portion.
- 10. The running tool according to claim 9, wherein the third engagement member is capable of being disengaged from the first portion in response to an axial force applied to the second portion.
- 11. A running tool for conveying and setting a plug within a generally tubular member, the plug being of the type which is set by displacing a first member relative to a second member thereof, the running tool comprising:
- a first portion securable to the first plug member;
- a second portion securable to the second plug member; and
- a plurality of pistons biasing the first and second portions to displace relative to each other.
- 12. The running tool according to claim 11, wherein the first portion includes a first engagement member engageable with the first plug member, and wherein the second portion includes a second engagement member engageable with the second plug member.
- 13. The running tool according to claim 12, wherein the first and second engagement members are radially displaceable to engage the first and second plug members, respectively.
- 14. The running tool according to claim 12, wherein the first portion includes a generally tubular mandrel and a release member disposed at least partially within the mandrel, displacement of the mandrel relative to the second portion disengaging the second engagement member from the second plug member, and displacement of the release member relative to the mandrel disengaging the first engagement member from the first plug member.
- 15. The running tool according to claim 11, further comprising an indicator device indicating relative displacement of the first portion relative to the second portion.
