Claims
- 1. A tool for tensioning safety cable to a predetermined tension limit comprising:
- an elongated nosepiece extending from an end of the tool, a distal end of said nosepiece having an aperture for passing the safety cable therethrough generally transverse to an elongate direction of said nosepiece, said nosepiece further having a passageway extending from a proximal end of said nosepiece in said elongate direction to an intersection with said aperture;
- a plunger mounted in said passageway in said nosepiece for reciprocating motion therein, said plunger having at least a portion thereof extending outwardly from said proximal end of said nosepiece;
- retaining means attached adjacent an end of said at least a portion of said plunger extending outwardly of said nosepiece;
- spring means positioned about said at least a portion of said plunger, said spring means being generally compressed between said proximal end of said nosepiece and said retaining means for urging said plunger in a direction away from said aperture;
- cap means fixed to the tool for retaining said nosepiece thereto, said nosepiece being slidably retained to said tool and rotatable about said elongate direction for aligning said aperture at selected angular directions transverse to said elongate direction.
- 2. The tool of claim 1 wherein said cap means includes a formed recess having a non-circular periphery, said proximal end of said nosepiece including a circumscribing portion adjacent said proximal end having a outer periphery generally conforming to said formed recess, said nosepiece portion adjacent said proximal end fitting in interlocking relationship with said formed recess when said nosepiece is in an operative position on the tool.
- 3. The tool of claim 2 wherein said circumscribing portion comprises a flange extending radially outward of said proximal end of said nosepiece.
- 4. The tool of claim 3 wherein said cap means includes a generally circular recess coaxially aligned with said formed recess and displaced axially therefrom, said nosepiece being axially moveable by depressing said nosepiece in a direction to compress said spring means to displace said flange into said generally circular recess to enable rotation of said nosepiece about said elongate direction.
- 5. The tool of claim 4 and including an actuator means in abutting contact with an end of said plunger for maintaining said plunger in a fixed position when said nosepiece is depressed.
- 6. The tool of claim 5 wherein said plunger includes a distal end protruding into said aperture when said nosepiece is in a depressed position.
- 7. The tool of claim 6 and including means retaining said plunger in position within said nosepiece for rotation therewith.
- 8. A tool for tensioning safety cable to a predetermined tension limit and for automatically terminating the cable when the predetermined limit is reached, the tool comprising:
- rotatable means mounted for reciprocating rotation about a point on the tool for incrementally advancing the cable during a drive stroke;
- a toggle assembly operatively connected to said rotatable means for affecting reciprocal rotating motion thereof;
- tension setting means operatively coupled to said toggle assembly for inhibiting rotation of the rotatable means when tension on the cable is greater than a preselected value;
- an elongated nosepiece extending from an end of the tool, a distal end of said nosepiece having an aperture for passing the safety cable therethrough generally transverse to an elongate direction of said nosepiece, said nosepiece further having a passageway extending from a proximal end of said nosepiece in said elongate direction to an intersection with said aperture;
- a plunger mounted in said passageway in said nosepiece for reciprocating motion therein, said plunger having at least a portion thereof extending outwardly from said proximal end of said nosepiece;
- retaining means attached adjacent an end of said at least a portion of said plunger extending outwardly of said nosepiece;
- spring means positioned about said at least a portion of said plunger, said spring means being generally compressed between said proximal end of said-nosepiece and said retaining means for urging said plunger in a direction away from said aperture;
- cap means fixed to the tool for retaining said nosepiece thereto, said nosepiece being slidably retained to said tool and rotatable about said elongate direction for aligning said aperture at selected angular directions transverse to said elongate direction; and
- means operative in response to inhibited rotation of the rotatable means for terminating the cable.
- 9. The tool of claim 8 wherein a deformable ferrule is held in the aperture in said nosepiece and the cable passes through the ferrule to said rotatable means, said means for terminating the cable comprising means for advancing said plunger for compressing the ferrule onto the cable.
- 10. The tool of claim 9 and including a reduced diameter portion of said aperture for blocking passage of said ferrule therethrough, said reduced diameter portion being operative in conjunction with said ferrule and said plunger for severing said cable.
