Claims
- 1. A pedestrian-operated machine comprising:
- a body supported for movement over the ground; and
- a planar guard attached to said body and biased to extend away from the body toward the ground, wherein said planar guard is arranged to slidably retract in a generally vertical direction relative to the ground only when an object makes contact with said guard in a manner which exerts a force on said guard in an upward direction from the ground, thereby preventing lateral relative movement of objects with between said body and the ground.
- 2. The machine of claim 1 further comprising a bracket secured to said body, said planar guard being inserted at one end within said bracket.
- 3. The machine of claim 2 further comprising a pair of pins extending through said planar guard and said bracket, said pair of pins being slidably coupled at each end to said body.
- 4. The machine of claim 1 wherein a plurality of guards are attached around the periphery of the body.
- 5. The machine of claim 4 wherein 2 or more guards are attached to each side of the body which is to be guarded.
- 6. A pedestrian-operated machine comprising:
- a body supported for movement over the ground; and
- a guard attached to said body to permit generally vertical extension and retraction of the guard relative to the ground while preventing lateral relative movement of objects with respect to said body, wherein said guard includes a bracket defining a vertically elongated opening and a passive guard which is inserted into the vertically elongated opening and is vertically moveable therein.
- 7. The machine of claim 6 wherein the elongated opening is flared at its upper end and the passive guard has a broadened upper end.
- 8. The machine of claim 6 further comprising a pair of pins extending through said guard and said bracket, said pair of pins being slidably coupled at each end to said body.
- 9. The machine of claim 6 wherein the elongated opening is flared at its upper end and the passive guard has a broadened upper end.
- 10. The machine of claim 6 wherein a plurality of guards are attached around the periphery of the body.
- 11. The machine of claim 10 wherein two or more guards are attached to each side of the body which is to be guarded.
