Claims
- 1. A machine comprising:
an operative structure adapted to perform a task, where the operative structure includes a cutting tool adapted to move in at least one motion; and a safety system adapted to detect the occurrence of an unsafe condition between a person and the cutting tool, where the safety system includes a detection subsystem adapted to detect the unsafe condition, and a reaction subsystem adapted to mitigate the unsafe condition; where the reaction subsystem includes at least one mechanism selected from the following:
a brake mechanism adapted to stop at least one motion of the cutting tool within 10 milliseconds after detection of the unsafe condition; a brake mechanism adapted to engage the cutting tool, and positioned adjacent the cutting tool, and further adapted to maintain its position adjacent the cutting tool when a motion of the cutting tool changes an operative position of the cutting tool; a retraction mechanism adapted to move the cutting tool in a direction away from the person upon detection of the unsafe condition; a barrier mechanism adapted to place a barrier over at least a part of the cutting tool upon detection of the unsafe condition; and/or a disabling mechanism adapted to disable at least a portion of the cutting tool upon detection of the unsafe condition.
- 2. A machine comprising:
an operative structure configured to perform a task, where the operative structure includes a cutting tool adapted to move in at least one motion; and a safety system including a detection subsystem and a reaction subsystem, where the detection and reaction subsystems are selected from the following:
i) a detection subsystem adapted to detect contact between a person and a specified portion of the operative structure, and a reaction subsystem adapted to react after detection of the contact by the detection subsystem, where the detection subsystem includes a capacitive coupling between a sensor and the specified portion of the operative structure, and where the detection system is adapted to use the capacitive coupling to detect the contact between the specified portion and the person; or ii) a detection subsystem adapted to detect the occurrence of an unsafe condition between a person and the cutting tool, and a reaction subsystem adapted to mitigate the unsafe condition, where the reaction subsystem includes at least one of the following: a brake mechanism adapted to stop at least one motion of the cutting tool within 10 milliseconds after detection of the unsafe condition, a brake mechanism adapted to engage the cutting tool and positioned adjacent the cutting tool and further adapted to maintain its position adjacent the cutting tool when a motion of the cutting tool changes an operative position of the cutting tool, a retraction mechanism adapted to move the cutting tool in a direction away from the person upon detection of the unsafe condition, a barrier mechanism adapted to place a barrier over at least a part of the cutting tool upon detection of the unsafe condition, and/or a disabling mechanism adapted to disable at least a portion of the cutting tool upon detection of the unsafe condition.
- 3. The machine of claim 2, where the cutting tool is a blade; where the reaction subsystem includes a brake mechanism configured to engage and stop the blade; and where the engagement of the brake mechanism with the blade tends to urge the blade away from the unsafe condition or point of contact.
- 4. The machine of claim 2, where the operative structure is a woodworking machine; and where the detection subsystem is adapted to distinguish contact between green wood and the cutting tool from the unsafe condition.
- 5. The machine of claim 2, further comprising a control system configured to determine the operability of the reaction subsystem and to disable the machine if the reaction subsystem is inoperable.
- 6. The machine of claim 2, where the cutting tool is a blade; where the reaction subsystem includes a brake mechanism configured to engage and stop the blade; and further comprising a fusible member to trigger the brake mechanism and a firing subsystem to fuse the fusible member.
- 7. The machine of claim 2, where the reaction subsystem includes one or more single-use components mounted in a removable cartridge.
- 8. The machine of claim 2, where the reaction subsystem includes a brake mechanism, and where the brake mechanism includes a brake pawl configured to engage the cutting tool by pivoting into the cutting tool.
- 9. The machine of claim 2, where the operative structure is one of the following pieces of woodworking machinery: a table saw, a band saw, a miter saw, a hand-held circular saw, a pneumatic chop saw, a radial-arm saw, a jointer, a planar, a router, or a shaper.
- 10. A machine comprising:
an operative structure configured to perform a task, where the operative structure includes a cutting tool adapted to move in at least one motion; and a safety system means for detecting the occurrence of an unsafe condition between a person and the cutting tool and for mitigating the unsafe condition.
