Claims
- 1. A sample retention apparatus for use in a device for measuring hemostasis, the device for measuring hemostasis including a sample articulation apparatus including a guide shaft coupled for articulating motion to a drive motor, a sample carrier secured to and axially moveable along the guide shaft between a sample ready position, a sample testing position and a sample ejection position, the sample carrier articulating in unison with the articulating motion of the guide shaft, and a measuring apparatus including a sensing column, the sample retention apparatus comprising:
a sample cup defining a volume within which a sample may be disposed, the sample cup being adapted to be operably positioned within an aperture formed within the sample carrier; and a sample pin that is engageable with the sensing column, the sample pin including a tip portion for extending into the sample cup and defining a sample space between an inner wall of the sample cup and an outer surface of the tip portion and a flange extending radially outwardly from the tip portion for substantially completely enclosing the sample space during measurement of hemostasis.
- 2. The sample retention apparatus as set forth in claim 1, wherein the sample tip flange is annular.
- 3. The sample retention apparatus as set forth in claim 1, wherein each of the sample cup and the sample tip are constructed from plastic.
- 4. The sample retention apparatus as set forth in claim 1, wherein the sample cup includes a flange adjacent the volume that is engaged by the sample tip flange for enclosing the volume.
- 5. The sample retention apparatus as set forth in claim 1, wherein the sample cup and the sample tip are for one-time use.
- 6. The sample retention apparatus as set forth in claim 1, wherein the sample tip is formed to include a circular aperture for engaging the measuring apparatus.
- 7. The sample retention apparatus as set forth in claim 1, wherein the volume is sized to retain a sample of approximately 360 μL.
- 8. The sample retention apparatus as set forth in claim 1, wherein the sample space is defined by an approximately 1 mm gap between the outer surface of the tip portion and the inner wall of the sample cup.
- 9. A disposable for use in testing hemostasis comprising:
a sample cup defining a volume within which a sample may be disposed, the sample cup being adapted to be operably positioned within a hemostasis testing apparatus; and a sample pin that is engageable with the hemostasis testing apparatus, the sample pin including a tip portion for extending into the sample cup and defining a sample space between an inner wall of the sample cup and an outer surface of the tip portion and a flange extending radially outwardly from the tip portion for substantially enclosing the sample space during measurement of hemostasis.
- 10. The disposable for use in testing hemostasis as set forth in claim 9, comprising packaged a plurality of sample cups and a plurality of sample pins.
- 11. The disposable for use in testing hemostasis as set forth in claim 9, wherein the sample tip flange is annular.
- 12. The disposable for use in testing hemostasis as set forth in claim 9, wherein each of the sample cup and the sample tip are constructed from plastic.
- 13. The disposable for use in testing hemostasis as set forth in claim 9, wherein the sample cup includes a flange adjacent the volume that is engaged by the sample tip flange for enclosing the volume.
- 14. The disposable for use in testing hemostasis as set forth in claim 9, wherein the sample cup and the sample tip are for one-time use.
- 15. The disposable for use in testing hemostasis as set forth in claim 9, wherein the sample tip is formed to include a circular aperture for engaging the measuring apparatus.
- 16. The disposable for use in testing hemostasis as set forth in claim 9, wherein the volume is sized to retain a sample of approximately 360 μL.
- 17. The disposable for use in testing hemostasis as set forth in claim 9, wherein the sample space is defined by an approximately 1 mm gap between the outer surface of the tip portion and the inner wall of the sample cup.
- 18. A sample retention apparatus for use in testing hemostasis comprising:
means for retaining a sample to be tested; means engaging the sample for operatively coupling the sample to a hemostasis testing apparatus; and means for substantially enclosing the sample retained within the means for retaining while the means for operatively coupling is engaging the sample.
- 19. The sample retention apparatus of claim 18, wherein the means for substantially enclosing comprises a flange formed on the means engaging the sample for operatively coupling.
- 20. The sample retention apparatus of claim 19, wherein the flange is annular.
