Claims
- 1. A sampling cartridge for gas sampling apparatus comprising:a shell having a cylindrical wall and a sampling window extending through said wall; and a spool positioned adjacent said shell and having a sample collector located at a first circumferential location and a window closing surface located at a second different circumferential location, at least one of said shell and said spool being relatively rotatable, wherein said sample collector and window closing surface can be selectively alternatively positioned adjacent said window for sample collection and cartridge sealing, respectively and wherein said window closing surface is automatically positioned adjacent said window whenever the cartridge is removed from the gas sampling apparatus.
- 2. The cartridge of claim 1, wherein said spool is coaxial with said shell.
- 3. The cartridge of claim 2, wherein said spool is located within said shell.
- 4. The cartridge of claim 3, wherein said shell wall is at least partially transparent.
- 5. The cartridge of claim 1, wherein said spool has a plurality of sample collectors at circumferentially spaced locations.
- 6. The cartridge of claim 5, wherein each of said sample collectors comprises a foam or porous cloth material.
- 7. The cartridge of claim 1, wherein said sample collector comprises a perforated foam material.
- 8. The cartridge of claim 7, further including a fully encapsulated segment of said foam material.
- 9. The cartridge of claim 1, further including memory means for storing chain of custody information about said cartridge.
- 10. The cartridge of claim 9, wherein said chain of custody information includes personal identification information of a cartridge replenisher.
- 11. The cartridge of claim 10, wherein said memory means comprises a radio frequency tag.
- 12. The cartridge of claim 11, wherein said tag is serialized for traceability and write-protected to ensure single use of the cartridge.
- 13. The cartridge of claim 1, further including a duration sample collector exposed through said window and separate from said spool.
- 14. The cartridge of claim 13, wherein said duration sample collector is mounted at a first circumferential location on a second spool, said second spool being independently rotatable relative to said shell.
- 15. The cartridge of claim 14, wherein said second spool includes a second window closing surface at a second circumferential position, and wherein said first window closing surface and said second window closing surface are automatically positioned adjacent said window when the cartridge is removed from the gas sampling apparatus.
- 16. The cartridge of claim 1, in combination with gas sampling apparatus having an access door, and wherein said cartridge is automatically sealed by positioning said window closing surface adjacent said window, whenever said door is opened.
- 17. The combination of claim 16, wherein said gas sampling apparatus further includes a mandrel for mounting said cartridge and producing relative rotation between said shell and said spool.
- 18. The combination of claim 17, wherein said cartridge includes a radio frequency tag for chain of custody information recording and said apparatus includes a radio frequency antenna.
- 19. The combination of claim 18, further comprising means for recording personal identification information of a cartridge replenisher on said tag.
- 20. The cartridge of claim 1, further including a fully encapsulated portion of sample collector material as a negative control.
