Claims
- 1. A laundry process that provides cleaned, sanitized and pH neutralized laundry items, the process comprising:(a) contacting soiled laundry items with an alkaline detergent to form a treated laundry item; and (b) contacting the treated laundry item with a peracid composition comprising hydrogen peroxide, an organic carboxylic acid, and a resulting organic peracid, wherein said composition neutralizes and sanitizes the laundry item.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein step (b) is carried out at a temperature less than about 70° C.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein step (b) is carried out at a temperature less than about 50° C.
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein step (b) is carried out at a pH of between about 4 and 9.
- 5. The process of claim 1 wherein step (b) is carried out at a pH of between about 5 and 7.
- 6. The process of claim 1, wherein the peracid is a C2 to C10 peroxycarboxylic acid.
- 7. The process of claim 6, wherein the peracid is a C2 to C5 peroxycarboxylic acid.
- 8. The process of claim 7, wherein the peracid is selected from the group consisting of peracetic acid, perpropionic acid, peroctanoic acid, perdecanoic acid, and a mixture thereof.
- 9. The process of claim 1, wherein the peracid is peroxyacetic acid.
- 10. The process of claim 1, wherein the alkaline detergent comprises a source of alkalinity and a surfactant.
- 11. The process of claim 1 wherein the alkaline detergent comprises a source of alkalinity, a surfactant and a builder salt.
- 12. The process of claim 1, wherein the peracid composition comprises at equilibrium:(a) about 1 to 50 wt-% hydrogen peroxide; (b) about 1 to 80 wt-% of a C2 to C10 carboxylic acid, and (c) about 1 to 50 wt-% of a resulting C2 to C10 peroxycarboxylic acid.
- 13. The process of claim 12, wherein the carboxylic acid is selected from the group consisting of acetic acid, propionic acid, octanoic acid, decanoic acid, and a mixture thereof.
- 14. The process of claim 12, wherein the carboxylic acid is acetic acid.
- 15. A laundry process, substantially free of a permanganate component, that cleans and sanitizes laundry items, the process comprising:(a) contacting a soiled laundry item with about 1 to 300 ounces of a laundry detergent chemical per hundred pounds of fabric laundry item, said laundry detergent comprising a source of alkalinity, and an anionic or nonionic surfactant in an aqueous medium, to remove soil to produce a treated laundry item; and (b) contacting the treated laundry item with about 1 to 10 ounces of an aqueous peracid composition per hundred pounds of laundry item, said peracid composition comprising hydrogen peroxide, an organic acid and the resulting organic peracid.
- 16. The process of claim 15, said process being carried out in an automated laundry machine.
- 17. The process of claim 16, wherein the treated laundry item is contacted with the peracid composition in a machine cycle at a temperature less than about 70° C.
- 18. The process of claim 16, wherein the treated laundry item is contacted with the peracid composition in a machine cycle at a temperature of less than about 50° C.
- 19. The process of claim 16, wherein the treated laundry item is contacted with the peracid composition in a machine cycle at a pH between about 4 and 9.
- 20. The process of claim 16, wherein the treated laundry item is contacted with the peracid composition in a machine cycle at a pH between about 5 and 7.
- 21. The process of claim 15, wherein the peracid is a C2 to C10 peroxycarboxylic acid.
- 22. The process of claim 15, wherein the peracid is a C2 to C5 peroxycarboxylic acid.
- 23. The process of claim 15, wherein the peracid is peroxyacetic acid.
- 24. A process for sanitizing and softening a laundry item treated with an alkaline detergent comprising contacting the treated laundry items with a peracid composition comprising hydrogen peroxide, an organic carboxylic acid, and a resulting organic peracid.
- 25. The process of claim 24, wherein the treated laundry item is contacted with about 1 to 10 ounces of an aqueous peracid composition per hundred pounds of laundry item, said peracid composition comprising hydrogen peroxide, an organic acid and the resulting organic peracid.
