- 3. The blade clamping arrangement of claim 2, wherein said release lever is mounted for pivotal movement about a pivot axis spaced apart from and parallel to the drive shaft.
- 4. The blade clamping arrangement of claim 1, wherein said locking member is a bearing.
- 5. The blade clamping arrangement of claim 4, further including a biasing member for biasing said control member to said first position.
- 6. The blade clamping arrangement of claim 1, wherein said control member defines a camming surface for urging said locking member into engagement with said saw blade when said control member is translated from said second position to said first position.
- 7. The blade clamping arrangement of claim 6, further including a collar releasably attached to and circumferentially surrounding said support member, said control member movably attached to said collar.
- 8. A power reciprocating saw comprising:
- a housing;
- a drive shaft mounted to the reciprocating saw for reciprocating movement in a longitudinal direction;
- a saw blade; and
- a clamping arrangement for selectively mounting said saw blade to said drive shaft, said clamping arrangement including:
- (a) a locking member for selectively interconnecting said saw blade and said drive shaft;
- (b) a control member carried by said drive shaft and linearly translatable in a direction substantially perpendicular to said longitudinal direction between a first and a second position; and
- (c) an actuation member attached to said housing, said actuation member being longitudinally fixed with respect to said housing, said actuation member moveable between a clamping position in which said control member is translated to said first position for urging said locking member into operative engagement with said saw blade and a release position in which actuation member directly engages said control member and said control member is translated to said second position for permitting displacement of said locking member from said saw blade.
- 9. The power reciprocating saw of claim 8, further comprising a biasing member for biasing said control member to said first position.
- 10. The power reciprocating saw of claim 8, further comprising a support member interconnected with said drive shaft, and further wherein said biasing member is attached to said support member.
- 11. The power reciprocating saw of claim 8, wherein said actuation member is a release lever mounted for pivotal movement between said clamping position and said release position.
- 12. The power reciprocating saw of claim 11, wherein said release lever is mounted for pivotal movement about a pivot axis parallel to and spaced apart from said saw blade.
- 13. The power reciprocating saw of claim 8, wherein said locking member comprises a bearing.
- 14. The power reciprocating saw of claim 13, wherein said control member includes a camming surface for urging said locking member into engagement with said saw blade.
- 15. A power reciprocating saw comprising:
- a gear case housing;
- a drive shaft mounted to the reciprocating saw for reciprocating motion relative to said gear case housing in a longitudinal direction;
- a saw blade; and
- a clamping arrangement for mounting said saw blade to said drive shaft, said clamping arrangement including:
- (a) a support member interconnected with said drive shaft for movement therewith, said support member at least partially defining a longitudinal slot for receiving said saw blade and a transversely disposed aperture intersecting said longitudinal slot;
- (b) a control member carried by said drive shaft and interconnected to said support member, said control member linearly translatable in a direction substantially perpendicular to said longitudinal direction between a first position and a second position;
- (c) a bearing selectively engageable with said saw blade in response to movement of said control member between said first position and said second position to operatively interconnect said saw blade relative to said drive shaft, said bearing extending at least partially into said transversely disposed aperture of said support member;
- (d) a release lever pivotally attached to said housing for pivotal movement between a clamping position in which said control member is in said first position and said bearing is engaged with said saw blade and a release position in which said release lever directly engages said control member and control member is in said second position and said bearing is permitted to be displaced from said saw blade.
- 16. The power reciprocating saw of claim 15, further including a collar releasably attached to and circumferentially surrounding said clamp support member, said control member movably attached to said collar.
- 17. The power reciprocating saw of claim 16, wherein said control member defines a camming surface for urging said bearing into engagement with said saw blade when said control member is translated from said second position to said first position.
- 18. The power reciprocating saw of claim 15, further comprising a biasing member for biasing said control member to said first position.
