Claims
- 1. A laser bar code scanner assembily comprising;
- a portable, handheld housing body enclosing, at least partly, an interior;
- a window positioned on one end of the housing body;
- a first scan module releasably affixed to the interior of the housing body, wherein the first scan module comprises a first configuration having a first set of optical components, including a scanning mechanism, and which projects a laser beam through the window along an optical path to a bar code symbol, scans the laser beam over the symbol in a predetermined pattern, collects at least a portion of the resultant light reflected from the symbol, and produces a digital signal comprising pulses; and
- a second scan module which is readily interchangeable with and plug compatible with the first scan module, and which comprises a second configuration having a second set of optical components,
- wherein the second scan module having a different configuration with different optical components than the optical components of the first scan module.
- 2. The laser bar code scanner assembly of claim 1 wherein the first scan module comprises optical components configured for long range scanning applications and the second scan module comprises optical components configured for short-range applications.
- 3. The laser bar code scanner assembly of claim 1 wherein the first scan module is configured with an oscillating scanning mechanism and the second scan module is configured with a polygonal scanning mirror scanning mechanism.
- 4. The laser bar code scanner assembly of claim 1 wherein the first scan module is configured to produce an aiming beam and the second scan module is not configured to produce an aiming beam.
- 5. The laser bar code scanner assembly of claim 1 wherein the first scan module comprises an oscillating mirror for scanning the laser beam and the second scan module comprises a multi-faceted polygon scanning element for scanning the laser beam.
- 6. The laser bar code scanner assembly of claim 1 wherein the first scan module comprises a focusing lens system having optical elements which are all fixed in a single position and the second scan module comprises a multi-focus lens system having optical elements in which at least one of the optical elements is operatively movable to change focus of the multi-focus lens system.
- 7. The laser bar code scanner assembly of claim 1 wherein the first scan module is plug compatible within the housing body.
- 8. A laser bar code scanner assembly according to claim 1 wherein the scanning mechanism is selected from the group consisting of: an oscillating mirror, a pair of oscillating mirrors, a polygon facet wheel, a holographic disk, a basket mirror assembly.
- 9. A method of assembly of a handheld scanner for data reading, the handheld scanner including a housing having a handle portion and a head portion, comprising the steps of:
- providing a plurality of interchangeable scan head modules having different configurations with different optical components;
- installing a removable first scan head module in the head portion of the scanner housing, the first scan head module having a first configuration and a first set of optical components; and
- changing a function of the handheld scanner by changing out the removable first scan head module with a second scan head module having a second configuration with a second set of optical components, the optical components of the second set being different from the optical components of the first set.
- 10. A method according to claim 9 wherein the step of providing a plurality of interchangeable scan head modules comprises constructing the first scan module with an oscillating mirror for scanning the laser beam and constructing the second scan module with a multi-faceted polygon scanning element for scanning the laser beam.
- 11. A method according to claim 9 wherein the step of providing a plurality of interchangeable scan head modules comprises constructing the first scan module with a focusing lens system having optical elements which are all fixed in a single position and constructing the second scan module with a multi-focus lens system having optical elements in which at least one of the optical elements is operatively movable to change focus of the multi-focus lens system.
- 12. A method of assembly according to claim 9 further comprising the steps of
- manufacturing an inventory of the housings;
- manufacturing an inventory of the plurality of interchangeable scan head modules having different configurations components.
- 13. A method according to claim 9 further comprising the step of constructing the first and second scan head modules by constructing a scan head module with a removable subsystem, constructing a first subsystem in a first configuration and a second subsystem in a second configuration with the alternate components.
- 14. A method according to claim 9 wherein the step of changing a function comprises constructing the first scan head module in a first configuration, removing the first scan head module, converting the first scan head module into the second scan head module by removing a first subsystem from within the first scan head module and replacing the first subsystem with a second subsystem, the second subsystem comprising the alternate components, and installing the second scan head module in the scanner housing.
- 15. A method of assembly according to claim 9 wherein the second set of optical components being different from the first set of optical components comprises providing the first and second sets of optical components with different scanning mechanisms selected from the group consisting of: an oscillating mirror, a pair of oscillating mirrors, a polygon facet wheel, a holographic disk, a basket mirror assembly.
- 16. A bar code scanner assembly comprising:
- a portable, handheld housing body enclosing, at least partly, an interior;
- a first scan module releasably affixed within the interior of the housing body, the first scan module comprising a first configuration having first set of optical components which scans a symbol and produces a signal representative of the symbol; and
- a second scan module which is readily interchangeable with and plug compatible with the first scan module, and which comprises a second configuration having second set of optical components, the second scan module having a different configuration with different optical components than the optical components of the first scan module.
- 17. The bar code scanner assembly of claim 16 wherein the first scan module comprises optical components configured for long range scanning applications and the second scan module comprises optical components configured for short-range applications.
- 18. The bar code scanner assembly of claim 16 wherein the first scan module is configured with an oscillating scanning mechanism and the second scan module is configured with a rotating polygon mirror scanning mechanism.
- 19. The bar code scanner assembly of claim 16 wherein the first scan module comprises a focusing lens system having optical elements which are all fixed in a single position and the second scan module comprises a multi-focus lens system having optical elements in which at least one of the optical elements is operatively movable to change focus of the multi-focus lens system.
- 20. A bar code scanner assembly according to claim 1 or 16 wherein the first scan module further includes scan module sides bounding an interior of the scan module and enclosing the optical components.
- 21. A bar code scanner assembly according to claim 20 wherein the first scan module includes printed circuit boards, the first scan module being bounded on at least two sides by printed circuit boards.
- 22. A bar code scanner assembly according to claim 1 or 16 wherein the first scan module further includes scan module sides bounding an interior of the scan module and enclosing the module components, wherein one of said scan module sides comprises a printed circuit board.
- 23. A bar code scanner assembly according to claim 22 wherein the first scan module comprises a laser diode producing a laser beam and wherein one of the scan module sides having an opening for providing an exit path for the laser beam to the window.
- 24. A bar code scanner assembly according to claim 1 or 16 wherein the first scan module defines an interior within which the module components are enclosed, wherein the first scan module further includes a printed circuit board bounding one side of the scan module.
- 25. A bar code scanner assembly according to claim 1 or 16 wherein the first scan module comprises at least first and second printed circuit boards defining at least two sides of the first scan module.
- 26. A bar code scanner assembly according to claim 25 wherein the first and second printed circuit boards are disposed parallel to each other.
- 27. A bar code scanner assembly according to claim 25 wherein the first and second printed circuit boards are disposed perpendicular to each other.
- 28. A bar code scanner assembly according to claim 1 or 16 wherein the first scan module further includes a chassis, shock mounts mounted to sides of the chassis, the first scan module being releasably affixed to the interior of the housing body via the shock mounts.
- 29. A bar code scanner assembly according to claim 28 wherein the shock mounts comprise hubs on the sides of the chassis, with donut-shaped elements installed on the respective hubs.
- 30. A bar code scanner assembly according to claim 1 or 9 wherein the first scan module is in the shape of a rectangular parallelepiped.
- 31. A laser bar code scanner assembly according to claim 16 wherein the first set of optical components comprises optics forming a retrodirective system and the second set of optical components comprises optics forming a non-retrodirective system.
- 32. A laser bar code scanner assembly according to claim 16 wherein the first set of optical components comprises optics producing a single-line scan pattern and the second set of optical components comprises optics producing a multiple-line scan pattern.
- 33. A bar code scanner assembly according to claim 16 wherein the first set of optical components includes a scanning mechanism selected from the group consisting of: an oscillating mirror, a pair of oscillating mirrors, a polygon facet wheel, a holographic disk, a basket mirror assembly.
- 34. A bar code scanner assembly according to claim 33 wherein the second set of optical components includes a scanning mechanism selected from the group consisting of: an oscillating mirror, a pair of oscillating mirrors, a polygon facet wheel, a holographic disk, a basket mirror assembly, other than the scanning mechanism selected for the first set.
- 35. A bar code scanner assembly according to claim 16 wherein the first set of optical components comprises optics forming a retrodirective system and the second set of optical components comprises optics forming a non-retrodirective system.
- 36. A bar code scanner assembly according to claim 16 wherein the first set of optical components comprises optics producing a single-line scan pattern and the second set of optical components comprises optics producing a multiple-line scan pattern.
- 37. A method of assembly for a handheld scanner for data reading, comprising the steps of:
- manufacturing an inventory of scanner housings, a scanner housing having a handle portion and a head portion;
- manufacturing an inventory of a plurality of interchangeable scan head modules having different configurations with sets of different optical components;
- choosing a first scanner configuration;
- selecting a first removable scan head module having a first set of optical components corresponding to the first scanner configuration chosen;
- installing the removable scan head module in the head portion of the scanner housing.
- 38. A method of assembly according to claim 37 further comprising the steps of
- changing a function of the handheld scanner by changing out the removable first scan head module with a second scan head module having a second configuration different from the first scanner configuration.
- 39. A method of assembly according to claim 9 or 37 further comprising the steps of constructing the scan head modules with module sides bounding an interior of the scan head module and enclosing the optical components therewithin.
- 40. A method of assembly according to claim 9 or 37 wherein the scan head modules are formed in the shape of a rectangular parallelepiped.
- 41. A method of assembly according to claim 9 or 37 wherein the scan head modules define an interior within which the optical components are enclosed, the first scan head module including a printed circuit board constituting at least a portion of one side of the scan head module.
- 42. A method of assembly according to claim 9 or 37 wherein the first scan head module comprises at least first and second printed circuit boards defining at least portions of two sides of the first scan head module.
- 43. A method of assembly according to claim 37 wherein the sets of different optical components comprises providing different scanning mechanisms selected from the group consisting of: an oscillating mirror, a pair of oscillating mirrors, a polygon facet wheel, a holographic disk, a basket mirror assembly.
