Claims
- 1. An improved composition for retarding scorch during the compounding of thermoplastic polymers curable with organic peroxides, elastomeric polymers curable with organic peroxides and mixtures of said polymers in the presence of free radical initiators selected from the group consisting of dialkyl peroxides or diperoxy ketals, said improved composition being prepared by mixing as the essential ingredients:
- a) sulfur accelerator selected from the group;
- (i) compounds represented by the structure: ##STR4## wherein X is an ion derived from a metal selected from the group consisting of nickel, cobalt, iron, chromium, tin, zinc, copper, lead, bismuth, cadmium, selenium and tellurium, n may vary from 1 to 6 and is equal to the formal valance of the metal ion and R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently alkyl of 1 to 7 carbon atoms;
- (ii) sulfenamides; and
- (iii) compounds represented by the structure: ##STR5## wherein R.sub.3 is an alkyl group of 1 to 7 carbon atoms and n may have a positive value of from greater than zero up to about 6;
- b) hydroquinone in a weight ratio of 1:50 to 500:1 to sulfur accelerator; and
- c) coagent in a weight ratio of 100:1 to 1:100 by weight based on total weight of hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator, wherein the coagent is selected from the group consisting of monofunctional vinyl monomers, monofunctional allyl monomers, polyfunctional vinyl monomers, polyfunctional allyl monomers and mixtures thereof.
- 2. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the sulfur accelerator is selected from the group consisting of bismuth dimethyldithiocarbamate, cadmium diamyldithiocarbamate, copper dimethyldithiocarbamate, zinc dibutyldithiocarbamate, lead dimethyldithiocarbamate, selenium dimethyldithiocarbamate, tellurium diethyldithiocarbamate, zinc diamyldithiocarbamate and zinc diethyldithiocarbamate.
- 3. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the sulfur accelerator is selected from the group consisting of tetrabutyl-thiuram disulfide, tetramethylthiuram disulfide, tetramethyl-thiuram monosulfide and mixtures thereof.
- 4. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the hydroquinone is selected from the group consisting of hydroquinone, hydroquinone di(betahydroxyethyl)ether, hydroquinone monomethyl ether, mono-t-butyl hydroquinone, di-t-amyl hydroquinone and mixtures thereof.
- 5. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the coagent is selected from the group consisting of allyl diglycol carbonate, triallylcyanurate, triallylisocyanurate, allyl methacrylate, trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate, diallyladipate, diallyloxalate, diallylfumarate, triallyl phosphate, tetrallyloxyethane, triallyl trimellitate and mixtures thereof.
- 6. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the hydroquinone is hydroquinone monomethylether and the sulfur accelerator is zinc diamyldithiocarbamate.
- 7. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the hydroquinone is hydroquinone monomethylether and the sulfur accelerator is tetrabutylthiuram disulfide.
- 8. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the hydroquinone is mono-t-butyl hydroquinone and the sulfur accelerator is tetrabutylthiuram disulfide.
- 9. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the coagent is triallyl cyanurate.
- 10. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the coagent is triallyl trimellitate.
- 11. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the hydroquinone is mono-t-butyl hydroquinone, the sulfur accelerator tetrabutylthiuram disulfide and the coagent is triallyl cyanurate.
- 12. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the sulfur accelerator is N-cyclohexyl-2-benzothiazolesulfenamide.
- 13. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the hydroquinone is mono-t-butyl hydroquinone, the sulfur accelerator is zinc dibutyldithiocarbamate and the coagent is triallylcyanurate.
- 14. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator are blended in a first step and the coagent is blended into the mixture of the first step in a second step.
- 15. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein all three ingredients are blended substantially contemporaneously.
- 16. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the coagent and hydroquinone are blended in a first step and sulfur accelerator is blended with the mixture of the first step in a second step.
- 17. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the coagent and sulfur accelerator are blended in a first step and the hydroquinone is blended with the mixture of first step in a second step.
- 18. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the sulfur accelerator is selected from compounds represented by the structure: ##STR6## wherein X is an ion derived from a metal selected from the group consisting of nickel, cobalt, iron, chromium, tin, zinc, copper, lead, bismuth, cadmium, selenium and tellurium, n may vary from 1 to 6 and is equal to the formal valence of the metal ion, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently alkyl of 1 to 7 carbon atoms.
- 19. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the sulfur accelerator is selected from compounds represented by the formula: ##STR7## wherein R.sub.3 is an alkyl group of 1 to 7 carbon atoms and n may have a positive value from greater than zero up to about 6.
- 20. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the hydroquinone is a mixture of hydroquinone monomethyl ether and mono-t-butyl hydroquinone, the sulfur accelerator is tetrabutylthiuram disulfide and the coagent is triallylcyanurate.
