Claims
- 1. A crosslinkable, scorch retarded composition consisting essentially of polymer selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic polymers crosslinkable by a peroxide or an azo compound, elastomeric polymers crosslinkable by a peroxide or an azo compound or mixtures of such polymers and sufficient scorch retarding, curing-crosslinking composition to provide 0.01 to 30 parts by weight free radical initiator, said free radical initiator being selected from organic peroxides, azo compounds and mixtures thereof, said scorch retarding, curing-crosslinking composition being prepared by mixing as the essential ingredients, hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator in a weight ratio of from 1:500 to 50:1, coagent in a weight ratio of from 100:1 to 1:100 to the combined weight of hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator and free radical initiator in a weight ratio of free radical initiator to combined weight of hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator of 100:0.5 to 2:1, wherein said sulfur accelerator is selected from the group consisting of dithiocarbamates, thiurams, thiazoles, sulfenamides and mixtures thereof.
- 2. A crosslinkable, scorch retarded composition consisting essentially of polymer selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic polymers crosslinkable by a peroxide or an azo compound, elastomeric polymers crosslinkable by a peroxide or an azo compound, or mixtures of such polymers and sufficient scorch retarding, curing-crosslinking composition to provide 0.01 to 30 parts by weight free radical initiator, said free radical initiator being selected from organic peroxides, azo compounds and mixtures thereof, said scorch retarding, curing-crosslinking composition being prepared by mixing as the essential ingredients, hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator in a weight ratio of from 1:500 to 50:1, coagent in a weight ratio of from 100:1 to 1:100 to the combined weight of hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator and free radical initiator in a weight ratio of free radical initiator to combined weight of hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator of 100:0.5 to 2:1, wherein the sulfur accelerator is selected from compounds represented by the formula:(R3)(R3)N—C(═S)—Sn—C(═S)—N(R3)(R3) wherein R3 is an alkyl group of 1 to 7 carbon atoms and n may have a positive value from greater than zero up to about 6.
- 3. A crosslinkable, scorch retarded composition consisting essentially of polymer selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic polymers crosslinkable by a peroxide or an azo compound, elastomeric polymers crosslinkable by a peroxide or an azo compound, or mixtures of such polymers and sufficient scorch retarding, curing-crosslinking composition to provide 0.01 to 30 parts by weight free radical initiator, said free radical initiator being selected from organic peroxides, azo compounds and mixtures thereof, said scorch retarding, curing-crosslinking composition being prepared by mixing as the essential ingredients, hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator in a weight ratio of from 1:500 to 50:1, coagent in a weight ratio of from 100:1 to 1:100 to the combined weight of hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator and free radical initiator in a weight ratio of free radical initiator to combined weight of hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator of 100:0.5 to 2:1, wherein the sulfur accelerator is selected from the group consisting of tetrabutylthiuram disulfide, tetramethylthiuram disulfide and tetraethylthiuram disulfide or mixtures thereof.
- 4. A crosslinkable, scorch retarded composition consisting essentially of polymer selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic polymers crosslinkable by a peroxide or an azo compound, elastomeric polymers crosslinkable by a peroxide or an azo compound, or mixtures of such polymers and sufficient scorch retarding, curing-crosslinking composition to provide 0.01 to 30 parts by weight free radical initiator, said free radical initiator being selected from organic peroxides, azo compounds and mixtures thereof, said scorch retarding, curing-crosslinking composition being prepared by mixing as the essential ingredients, hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator in a weight ratio of from 1:500 to 50:1, coagent in a weight ratio of from 100:1 to 1:100 to the combined weight of hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator and free radical initiator in a weight ratio of free radical initiator to combined weight of hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator of 100:0.5 to 2:1, wherein the hydroquinone is mono-t-butyl hydroquinone, and the sulfur accelerator is tetrabutylthiuram disulfide.
- 5. A crosslinkable, scorch retarded composition consisting essentially of polymer selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic polymers crosslinkable by a peroxide or an azo compound, elastomeric polymers crosslinkable by a peroxide or an azo compound, or mixtures of such polymers and sufficient scorch retarding, curing-crosslinking composition to provide 0.01 to 30 parts by weight free radical initiator, said free radical initiator being selected from organic peroxides, azo compounds and mixtures thereof, said scorch retarding, curing-crosslinking composition being prepared by mixing as the essential ingredients, hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator in a weight ratio of from 1:500 to 50:1, coagent in a weight ratio of from 100:1 to 1:100 to the combined weight of hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator and free radical initiator in a weight ratio of free radical initiator to combined weight of hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator of 100:0.5 to 2:1, wherein the hydroquinone is mono-t-butyl hydroquinone, the sulfur accelerator is tetrabutylthiuram disulfide and the free radical initiator is dicumylperoxide.
- 6. A crosslinkable, scorch retarded composition consisting essentially of polymer selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic polymers crosslinkable by a peroxide or an azo compound, elastomeric polymers crosslinkable by a peroxide or an azo compound, or mixtures of such polymers and sufficient scorch retarding, curing-crosslinking composition to provide 0.01 to 30 parts by weight free radical initiator, said free radical initiator being selected from organic peroxides, azo compounds and mixtures thereof, said scorch retarding, curing-crosslinking composition being prepared by mixing as the essential ingredients, hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator in a weight ratio of from 1:500 to 50:1, coagent in a weight ratio of from 100:1 to 1:100 to the combined weight of hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator and free radical initiator in a weight ratio of free radical initiator to combined weight of hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator of 100:0.5 to 2:1, wherein the hydroquinone is mono-t-butyl hydroquinone, the sulfur accelerator is tetrabutylthiuram disulfide, the free radical initiator is dicumyl peroxide and the thermoplastic polymer is ethyl-vinylacetate.
- 7. A crosslinkable, scorch retarded composition consisting essentially of polymer selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic polymers crosslinkable by a peroxide or an azo compound, elastomeric polymers crosslinkable by a peroxide or an azo compound, or mixtures of such polymers and sufficient scorch retarding, curing-crosslinking composition to provide 0.01 to 30 parts by weight free radical initiator, said free radical initiator being selected from organic peroxides, azo compounds and mixtures thereof, said scorch retarding, curing-crosslinking composition being prepared by mixing as the essential ingredients, hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator in a weight ratio of from 1:500 to 50:1, coagent in a weight ratio of from 100:1 to 1:100 to the combined weight of hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator and free radical initiator in a weight ratio of free radical initiator to combined weight of hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator of 100:0.5 to 2:1, wherein the hydroquinone is mono-t-butyl hydroquinone, the sulfur accelerator is tetrabutylthiuram disulfide and the fire radical initiator is 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(t-butylperoxy)hexane.
- 8. A crosslinkable, scorch retarded composition consisting essentially of polymer selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic polymers crosslinkable by a peroxide or an azo compound, elastomeric polymers crosslinkable by a peroxide or an azo compound, or mixtures of such polymers and sufficient scorch retarding, curing-crosslinking composition to provide 0.01 to 30 parts by weight free radical initiator, said free radical initiator being selected from organic peroxides, azo compounds and mixtures thereof, said scorch retarding, curing-crosslinking composition being prepared by mixing as the essential ingredients, hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator in a weight ratio of from 1:500 to 50:1, coagent in a weight ratio of from 100:1 to 1:100 to the combined weight of hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator and free radical initiator in a weight ratio of free radical initiator to combined weight of hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator of 100:0.5 to 2:1, wherein the coagent is triallyltrimellitate, the hydroquinone is hydroquinone monomethyl ether, the sulfur accelerator is tetramethylthiuram monosulfide and the free radical initiator is 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(t-butylperoxy)-hexyne-3.
- 9. A crosslinkable, scorch retarded composition consisting essentially of polymer selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic polymers crosslinkable by a peroxide or an azo compound, elastomeric polymers crosslinkable by a peroxide or an azo compound, or mixtures of such polymers and sufficient scorch retarding, curing-crosslinking composition to provide 0.01 to 30 parts by weight free radical initiator, said free radical initiator being selected from organic peroxides, azo compounds and mixtures thereof, said scorch retarding, curing-crosslinking composition being prepared by mixing as the essential ingredients, hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator in a weight ratio of from 1:500 to 50:1, coagent in a weight ratio of from 100:1 to 1:100 to the combined weight of hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator and free radical initiator in a weight ratio of free radical initiator to combined weight of hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator of 100:0.5 to 2:1, wherein the sulfur accelerator is N-cyclohexyl-2-benzothiazole sulfenamide.
- 10. A crosslinkable, scorch retarded composition consisting essentially of high density polyethylene crosslinkable by a peroxide or an azo compound and sufficient scorch retarding, curing-crosslinking composition to provide 0.01 to 30 parts by weight free radical initiator, said free radical initiator being selected from organic peroxides, azo compounds and mixtures therof, said scorch retarding, curing-crosslinking composition being prepared by mixing as the essential ingredients, hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator in a weight ratio of from 1:500 to 50:1, coagent in a weight ratio of from 100:1 to 1:100 to the combined weight of hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator and free radical initiator in a weight ratio of free radical initiator to combined weight of hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator of 100:0.5 to 2:1, wherein the hydroquinone is hydroquinone monomethyl ether, the sulfur accelerator is tetramethylthiuram monosulfide, the peroxide is 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(t-butylperoxy)-hexyne-3 and the coagent is triallylcyanurate.
- 11. A crosslinkable, scorch retarded composition consisting essentially of high density polyethylene crosslinkable by a peroxide or an azo compound and sufficient scorch retarding, curing-crosslinking composition to provide 0.01 to 30 parts by weight free radical initiator, said free radical initiator being selected from organic peroxides, azo compounds and mixtures therof, said scorch retarding, curing-crosslinking composition being prepared by mixing as the essential ingredients, hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator in a weight ratio of from 1:500 to 50:1, coagent in a weight ratio of from 100:1 to 1:100 to the combined weight of hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator and free radical initiator in a weight ratio of free radical initiator to combined weight of hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator of 100:0.5 to 2:1, wherein the hydroquinone is hydroquinone monomethyl ether, the sulfur accelerator is tetrabutylthiuram disulfide the peroxide is 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(t-butylperoxy)-hexyne-3 and the coagent is triallylisocyanurate.
- 12. A crosslinkable, scorch retarded composition consisting essentially of high density polyethylene crosslinkable by a peroxide or an azo compound and sufficient scorch retarding, curing-crosslinking composition to provide 0.01 to 30 parts by weight free radical initiator, said free radical initiator being selected from organic peroxides, azo compounds and mixtures therof, said scorch retarding, curing-crosslinking composition being prepared by mixing as the essential ingredients, hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator in a weight ratio of from 1:500 to 50:1, coagent in a weight ratio of from 100:1 to 1:100 to the combined weight of hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator and free radical initiator in a weight ratio of free radical initiator to combined weight of hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator of 100:0.5 to 2:1, wherein the hydroquinone is hydroquinone monomethyl ether, the sulfur accelerator is tetrabutylthiuram disulfide the peroxide is a mixture of 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(t-butylperoxy)-hexyne and 1,1-di(t-butylperoxy)-diisopropylbenzene, and the coagent is triallylisocyanurate.
