Claims
- 1. A polymer selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic polymers crosslinkable by organic peroxides or azo initiators, elastomeric polymers crosslinkable by organic peroxides or azo initiators and mixtures of such thermoplastic and elastomeric polymers which polymer contains a scorch retarding crosslinking composition in sufficient quantity to provide 0.01 to 30 parts by weight of free radical initiator, said composition being prepared by mixing hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator in a weight ratio of 1:500 to 50:1 and a free radical initiator selected from the group consisting of organic peroxides and azo initiators in a weight ratio to total weight of hyroquinone and sulfur accelerator of 100:05 to 2:1.
- 2. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 1 selected from the group consisting of polyethylene, chlorinated polyethylene, ethylene propylene diene monomers polymer, ethylene propylene polymer, ethylene vinyl acetate polymer, silicone rubber, chlorosulfonated polyethylene and fluoroelastomers.
- 3. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the hydroquinone, sulfur accelerator and free radical initiator are mixed directly with the polymer substantially contemporaneously.
- 4. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the hydroquinone, sulfur accelerator and free radical initiator are blended substantially contemporaneously to form the scorch retarding crosslinking composition which is then blended with the polymer.
- 5. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 1 wherein any two of the three ingredients of the scorch retarding crosslinking composition, namely, hydroquinone, sulfur accelerator and free radical initiator are blended to form a submixture and the third ingredient is then blended with the submixture to form the scorch retarding crosslinking composition which is then blended with the polymer.
- 6. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 1 wherein any two of the three ingredients of the scorch retarding crosslinking composition, namely, hydroquinone, sulfur accelerator and free radical initiator, are blended to form a submixture which is then blended with the polymer and the remaining ingredient of the scorch retarding crosslinking composition is blended directly into the polymer.
- 7. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 1 wherein hydroquinone, sulfur accelerator, and free radical initiator are added to the polymer at separate times.
- 8. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 1 wherein any two of the three ingredients of the scorch retarding crosslinking composition, namely, hydroquinone, sulfur accelerator and free radical initiator are blended with the polymer substantially contemporaneously and the third ingredient of the scorch retarding crosslinking composition is blended with the polymer at a different time.
- 9. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 1 which is a thermoplastic polymer crosslinkable by an organic peroxide or an azo initiator.
- 10. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 1 which is an elastomeric polymer crosslinkable by an organic peroxide or an azo initiator.
- 11. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the sulfur accelerator is selected from compounds represented by the structure: ##STR4## wherein X is an ion derived from a metal selected from the group consisting of nickel, cobalt, iron, chromium, tin, zinc, copper, lead, bismuth, cadmium, selenium and tellurium, n may vary from 1 to 6 and is equal to the formal valence of the metal ion, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently alkyl of 1 to 7 carbon atoms.
- 12. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the sulfur accelerator is selected from the group consisting of: bismuth dimethyldithiocarbamate, cadmium diamyldithiocarbamate, cadmium diethyldithiocarbamate, copper dimethyldithiocarbamate, lead diamyldithiocarbamate, lead dimethyldithiocarbamate, tellurium diethyldithiocarbamate, zinc diamyldithiocarbamate, zinc dibutyldithiocarbamate, zinc diethyldithiocarbamate, and selenium dimethyldithiocarbamate.
- 13. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the sulfur accelerator is selected from compounds represented by the formula: ##STR5## wherein R.sub.3 is an alkyl group of 1 to 7 carbon atoms and n may have a positive value from greater than zero up to about 6.
- 14. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the sulfur accelerator is selected from the group consisting of tetrabutylthiuram disulfide, tetramethylthiuram disulfide and tetramethylthiuram monosulfide and mixtures thereof.
- 15. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the hydroquinone is selected from the group consisting of hydroquinone, hydroquinone di(betahydroxyethyl) ether, hydroquinone monomethyl ether, mono-t-butyl-hydroquinone, di-t-butylhydroquinone, and di-t-amylhydroquinone and mixtures thereof.
- 16. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the free radical initiator consists of at least one organic peroxide.
- 17. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the organic peroxide is selected from the group consisting of dialkyl peroxides, diperoxyketals and mixtures thereof.
- 18. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 9 wherein the free radical initiator consists of at least one organic peroxide.
- 19. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 9 wherein the organic peroxide is selected from the group consisting of dialkyl peroxides, diperoxyketals and mixtures thereof.
- 20. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 17 wherein the dialkyl peroxides are selected from dicumylperoxide; alpha, alpha-bis(t-butyl peroxy) diisopropylbenzene; t-butyl-cumyl peroxide; t-butyl isopropylcumyl peroxide; 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(t-butylperoxy)hexane; 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(t-butylperoxy)hexyne-3; 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(t-amylperoxy)-hexyne-3; di-t-amylperoxide; 1,3,5-tri[(t-butylperoxy)-isopropyl] benzene; 1,3-dimethyl-3-(t-butylperoxy) butanol; m/p-isopropylcumyl cumyl peroxide; and mixtures thereof.
- 21. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 17 wherein the diperoxyketal initiators are selected from the group consisting of: 1,1-di(t-butylperoxy)-3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexane; 1,1-di(t-butylperoxy) cyclohexane; n-butyl-4,4-di(t-amylperoxy) valerate; ethyl-3,3-di(t-butylperoxy)-butyrate; 2,2-di-(t-amylperoxy) propane; 3,6,6,9,9-pentamethyl-3-ethoxy carbonyl-methyl-1,2,4,5-tetraoxacyclonane; n-butyl-4,4-bis(t-butylperoxy) valerate; ethyl-3,3-di(t-amylperoxy) butyrate and mixtures thereof.
- 22. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 19 wherein the dialkyl peroxides are selected from dicumylperoxide; alpha, alpha-bis (t-butyl peroxy) diisopropropylbenzene; t-butyl cumyl peroxide; 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(t-butylperoxy) hexane; 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(t-butylperoxy) hexyne-3; 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(t-amylperoxy)-hexyne-3; di-t-amylperoxde; 1,3,5-tri[(t-butylperoxy)-isopropyl]-benzene; 1,3-dimethyl-3-(t-butylperoxy) isopropylbenzene; 1,3-dimethyl-3-(t-butylperoxy) butanol; and mixtures thereof.
- 23. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 19 wherein the diperoxyketal initiators are selected from the group consisting of: 1,1-di(t-butylperoxy) cyclohexane; n-butyl-4,4-di(t-amylperoxy) valerate; ethyl-3,3-di(t-butylperoxy)-butyrate; 2,2-di(t-amylperoxy)propane; 3,6,6,9,9-pentamethyl-3-ethoxy carbonylmethyl-1,2,4,5-tetraoxacyclonane; n-butyl-4,4-bis(t-butylperoxy) valerate; ethyl-3,3-di(t-amylperoxy)-butyrate and mixtures thereof.
- 24. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 9 wherein the sulfur accelerator is selected from compounds represented by the structure: ##STR6## wherein X is an ion derived from a metal selected from the group consisting of nickel, cobalt, iron, chromium, tin, zinc, copper, lead, bismuth, cadmium, selenium and tellurium, n may vary from 1 to 6 and is equal to the formal valence of the metal ion, and R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently alkyl of 1 to 7 carbon atoms.
- 25. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 6 wherein the sulfur accelerator is selected from compounds represented by the formula: ##STR7## wherein R.sub.3 is an alkyl group of 1 to 7 carbon atoms and n may have a positive value from greater than zero up to about 6.
- 26. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 10 wherein the sulfur accelerator is selected from compounds represented by the structure: ##STR8## wherein X is an ion derived from a metal selected from the group consisting of nickel, cobalt, iron, chromium, tin, zinc, copper, lead, bismuth, cadmium, selenium and tellurium, n may vary from 1 to 6 and is equal to the formal valence of the metal ion, and R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently alkyl of 1 to 7 carbon atoms.
- 27. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 10 wherein the sulfur accelerator is selected from compounds represented by the formula: ##STR9## wherein R.sub.3 is an alkyl group of 1 to 7 carbon atoms and n may have a positive value from greater than zero up to about 6.
- 28. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the hydroquinone is hydroquinone monomethyl ether, the sulfur accelerator is a zinc diamyldithiocarbamate and the free radical initiator is dicumyl peroxide.
- 29. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 9 wherein the hydroquinone is hydroquinone monomethyl ether, the sulfur accelerator is zinc diamyldithiocarbamate and the free radical initiator is dicumyl peroxide.
- 30. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 10 wherein the hydroquinone is hydroquinone monomethyl ether, the sulfur accelerator is zinc diamyldithiocarbamate, and the free radical initiator is dicumyl peroxide.
- 31. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 9 wherein the hydroquinone is hydroquinone monomethyl ether, the sulfur accelerator is zinc diamyldithiocarbamate; the free radical initiator is dicumyl peroxide and the thermoplastic polymer is linear low density polyethylene.
- 32. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the hydroquinone is mono-t-butylhydroquinone, the sulfur accelerator is tetrabutylthiuram disulfide and the free radical initiator is dicumyl peroxide.
- 33. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 10 wherein the hydroquinone is mono-t-butylhydroquinone, the sulfur accelerator is tetrabutylthiuram disulfide and the free radical initiator is dicumyl peroxide.
- 34. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 9 wherein the hydroquinone is mono-t-butylhydroquinone, the sulfur accelerator is tetrabutylthiuram disulfide, the free radical initiator is dicumyl peroxide and the thermoplastic polymer is ethylene-vinyl acetate.
- 35. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the hydroquinone is mono-t-butylhydroquinone, the sulfur accelerator is tetrabutylthiuram disulfide and the free radical initiator is 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(t-butylperoxy) hexane.
- 36. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 9 wherein the hydroquinone is mono-t-butylhydroquinone, the sulfur accelerator is tetrabutylthiuram disulfide, and the thermoplastic polymer is ethylene-vinyl acetate.
- 37. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the hydroquinone is hydroquinone monomethyl ether, the sulfur accelerator is zinc diamyldithiocarbamate and the free radical initiator is 1,1-bis(t-butylperoxy)-3,3,5-trimethyl-cyclohexane.
- 38. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 10 wherein the hydroquinone is hydroquinone monomethyl ether, the sulfur accelerator is zinc diamyl-dithiocarbamate, the free radical initiator is 1,1-bis(t-butylperoxy)-3,3,5-trimethyl-cyclohexane and the thermoplastic polymer is an ethylene-propylene-diene monomers terpolymer.
- 39. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the hydroquinone is hydroquinone monomethyl ether, the sulfur accelerator is zinc dibutyldithiocarbamate and the free radical initiator is a mixture of dicumyl peroxide and 1,1-di[(t-butylperoxy) isopropyl]-benzene.
- 40. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 9 wherein the hydroquinone is hydroquinone monomethyl ether, the sulfur accelerator is zinc diamyldithiocarbamate, the free radical initiator is dicumyl peroxide and the thermoplastic polymer is linear low density polyethylene.
- 41. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 10 wherein the hydroquinone is mono-t-butylhydroquinone, the sulfur accelerator is tetrabutylthiuram disulfide and the free radical initiator is dicumyl peroxide.
- 42. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 10 wherein the hydroquinone is hydroquinone monomethyl ether, the sulfur accelerator is zinc diamyldithiocarbamate and the free radical initiator is 1,1-bis-(t-butylperoxy)-3,3,5-trimethyl-cyclohexane.
- 43. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 10 wherein the hydroquinone is hydroquinone monomethyl ether, the sulfur accelerator is zinc diamyldithiocarbamate, the free radical initiator is 1,1-bis-(t-butylperoxy)-3-3-5-trimethyl-cyclohexane and the elastomeric polymer is an ethylene-propylene-diene monomer terpolymer.
- 44. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the hydroquinone is mono-t-butylhydroquinone, the sulfur accelerator is zinc dibutyldithiocarbamate and the initiator is selected from peroxyketals or dialkyl peroxides.
- 45. A polymer selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic polymers crosslinkable by organic peroxides or azo initiators, elastomeric polymers crosslinkable by organic peroxides or azo initiators and mixtures of such thermoplastic and elastomeric polymers which polymer contains a scorch retarding crosslinking composition in sufficient quantity to provide 0.01 to 30 parts by weight of free radical initiator, said composition being prepared by mixing hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator in a weight ratio of 1:500 to 50:1 and a free radical initiator selected from the group consisting of organic peroxides and azo initiators in a weight ratio to total weight of hydroquinone and sulfur accelerator of 100:05 to 2:1; and wherein the sulfur accelerator is selected from the group consisting of dithiocarbamates, thiurams, thiazoles, sulfenamides and mixtures thereof.
- 46. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 45 selected from the group consisting of polyethylene, chlorinated polyethylene, ethylene propylene diene monomers polymer, ethylene propylene polymer, ethylene vinyl acetate polymer, silicone rubber, chlorosulfonated polyethylene and fluoroelastomers.
- 47. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 45 wherein the hydroquinone, sulfur accelerator and free radical initiator are mixed directly with the polymer substantially contemporaneously.
- 48. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 45 wherein the hydroquinone, sulfur accelerator and free radical initiator are blended substantially contemporaneously to form the scorch retarding crosslinking composition which is then blended with the polymer.
- 49. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 45 wherein any two of the three ingredients of the scorch retarding crosslinking composition, namely, hydroquinone, sulfur accelerator and free radical initiator are blended to form a submixture and the third ingredient is then blended with the submixture to form the scorch retarding crosslinking composition which is then blended with the polymer.
- 50. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 45 wherein any two of the three ingredients of the scorch retarding crosslinking composition, namely, hydroquinone, sulfur accelerator and free radical initiator, are blended to form a submixture which is then blended with the polymer and the remaining ingredient of the scorch retarding crosslinking composition is blended directly into the polymer.
- 51. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 45 wherein hydroquinone, sulfur accelerator, and free radical initiator are added to the polymer at separate times.
- 52. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 45 wherein any two of the three ingredients of the scorch retarding crosslinking composition, namely, hydroquinone, sulfur accelerator and free radical initiator are blended with the polymer substantially contemporaneously and the third ingredient of the scorch retarding crosslinking composition is blended with the polymer at a different time.
- 53. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 45 which is a thermoplastic polymer crosslinkable by an organic peroxide or an azo initiator.
- 54. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 45 which is an elastomeric polymer crosslinkable by an organic peroxide or an azo initiator.
- 55. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 45 wherein the sulfur accelerator is selected from compounds represented by the structure: ##STR10## wherein X is an ion derived from a metal selected from the group consisting of nickel, cobalt, iron, chromium, tin, zinc, copper, lead, bismuth, cadmium, selenium and tellurium, n may vary from 1 to 6 and is equal to the formal valence of the metal ion, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently alkyl of 1 to 7 carbon atoms.
- 56. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 45 wherein the sulfur accelerator is selected from the group consisting of: bismuth dimethyldithiocarbamate, cadmium diamyldithiocarbamate, cadmium diethyldithiocarbamate, copper dimethyldithiocarbamate, lead diamyldithiocarbamate, lead dimethyldithiocarbamate, tellurium diethyldithiocarbamate, zinc diamyldithiocarbamate, zinc dibutyldithiocarbamate, zinc diethyldithiocarbamate, and selenium dimethyldithiocarbamate.
- 57. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 45 wherein the sulfur accelerator is selected from compounds represented by the formula: ##STR11## wherein R.sub.3 is an alkyl group of 1 to 7 carbon atoms and n may have a positive value from greater than zero up to about 6.
- 58. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 45 wherein the sulfur accelerator selected from the group consisting of tetrabutylthiuram disulfide, tetramethylthiuram disulfide and tetramethylthiuram monosulfide and mixtures thereof.
- 59. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 45 wherein the hydroquinone is selected from the group consisting of hydroquinone, hydroquinone di(betahydroxyethyl) ether, hydroquinone monomethyl ether, mono-t-butyl-hydroquinone, di-t-butylhydroquinone, and di-t-amylhydroquinone and mixtures thereof.
- 60. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 45 wherein the free radical initiator consists of at least one organic peroxide.
- 61. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 45 wherein the organic peroxide is selected from the group consisting of dialkyl peroxides, diperoxyketals and mixtures thereof.
- 62. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 53 wherein the free radical initiator consists of at least one organic peroxide.
- 63. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 53 wherein the organic peroxide is selected from the group consisting of dialkyl peroxides, diperoxyketals and mixtures thereof.
- 64. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 61 wherein the dialkyl peroxides are selected from dicumylperoxide; alpha, alpha-bis(t-butyl peroxy) diisopropylbenzene; t-butyl-cumyl peroxide; t-butyl isopropylcumyl peroxide; 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(t-butylperoxy)hexane; 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(t-butylperoxy)hexyne-3; 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(t-amylperoxy)-hexyne-3; di-t-amylperoxide; 1,3,5-tri[(t-butylperoxy)-isopropyl] benzene; 1,3-dimethyl-3-(t-butylperoxy) butanol; m/p-isopropylcumyl cumyl peroxide; and mixtures thereof.
- 65. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 61 wherein the diperoxyketal initiators are selected from the group consisting of: 1,1-di(t-butylperoxy)-3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexane; 1,1-di(t-butylperoxy) cyclohexane; n-butyl-4,4-di(t-amylperoxy) valerate; ethyl-3,3-di(t-butylperoxy)-butyrate; 2,2-di-(t-amylperoxy) propane; 3,6,6,9,9-pentamethyl-3-ethoxy carbonyl-methyl-1,2,4,5-tetraoxacyclonane; n-butyl-4,4-bis(t-butylperoxy) valerate; ethyl-3,3-di(t-amylperoxy) butyrate and mixtures thereof.
- 66. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 63 wherein the dialkyl peroxides are selected from dicumylperoxide; alpha, alpha-bis (t-butyl peroxy) diisopropropylbenzene; t-butyl cumyl peroxide; 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(t-butylperoxy) hexane; 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(t-butylperoxy) hexyne-3; 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(t-amylperoxy)-hexyne-3; di -t-amylperoxde; 1,3,5-tri[(t-butylperoxy)-isopropyl]-benzene; 1,3-dimethyl-3-(t-butylperoxy) isopropylbenzene; 1,3-dimethyl-3-(t-butylperoxy) butanol; and mixtures thereof.
- 67. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 63 wherein the diperoxyketal initiators are selected from the group consisting of: 1,1-di(t-butylperoxy) cyclohexane; n-butyl-4,4-di(t-amylperoxy) valerate; ethyl-3,3-di(t-butylperoxy)-butyrate; 2,2-di(t-amylperoxy)propane; 3,6,6,9,9-pentamethyl-3-ethoxy carbonylmethyl-1,2,4,5-tetraoxacyclonane; n-butyl-4,4-bis(t-butylperoxy) valerate; ethyl-3,3-di(t-amylperoxy)-butyrate and mixtures thereof.
- 68. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 53 wherein the sulfur accelerator is selected from compounds represented by the structure: ##STR12## wherein X is an ion derived from a metal selected from the group consisting of nickel, cobalt, iron, chromium, tin, zinc, copper, lead, bismuth, cadmium, selenium and tellurium, n may vary from 1 to 6 and is equal to the formal valence of the metal ion, and R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently alkyl of 1 to 7 carbon atoms.
- 69. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 50 wherein the sulfur accelerator is selected from compounds represented by the formula: ##STR13## wherein R.sub.3 is an alkyl group of 1 to 7 carbon atoms and n may have a positive value from greater than zero up to about 6.
- 70. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 54 wherein the sulfur accelerator is selected from compounds represented by the structure: ##STR14## wherein X is an ion derived from a metal selected from the group consisting of nickel, cobalt, iron, chromium, tin, zinc, copper, lead, bismuth, cadmium, selenium and tellurium, n may vary from 1 to 6 and is equal to the formal valence of the metal ion, and R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently alkyl of 1 to 7 carbon atoms.
- 71. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 54 wherein the sulfur accelerator is selected from compounds represented by the formula: ##STR15## wherein R.sub.3 is an alkyl group of 1 to 7 carbon atoms and n may have a positive value from greater than zero up to about 6.
- 72. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 45 wherein the hydroquinone is hydroquinone monomethyl ether, the sulfur accelerator is a zinc diamyldithiocarbamate and the free radical initiator is dicumyl peroxide.
- 73. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 53 wherein the hydroquinone is hydroquinone monomethyl ether, the sulfur accelerator is zinc diamyldithiocarbamate and the free radical initiator is dicumyl peroxide.
- 74. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 54 wherein the hydroquinone is hydroquinone monomethyl ether, the sulfur accelerator is zinc diamyldithiocarbamate, and the free radical initiator is dicumyl peroxide.
- 75. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 53 wherein the hydroquinone is hydroquinone monomethyl ether, the sulfur accelerator is zinc diamyldithiocarbamate; the free radical initiator is dicumyl peroxide and the thermoplastic polymer is linear low density polyethylene.
- 76. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 45 wherein the hydroquinone is mono-t-butylhydroquinone, the sulfur accelerator is tetrabutylthiuram disulfide and the free radical initiator is dicumyl peroxide.
- 77. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 54 wherein the hydroquinone is mono-t-butylhydroquinone, the sulfur accelerator is tetrabutylthiuram disulfide and the free radical initiator is dicumyl peroxide.
- 78. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 53 wherein the hydroquinone is mono-t-butylhydroquinone, the sulfur accelerator is tetrabutylthiuram disulfide, the free radical initiator is dicumyl peroxide and the thermoplastic polymer is ethylene-vinyl acetate.
- 79. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 45 wherein the hydroquinone is mono-t-butylhydroquinone, the sulfur accelerator is tetrabutylthiuram disulfide and the free radical initiator is 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(t-butylperoxy) hexane.
- 80. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 53 wherein the hydroquinone is mono-t-butylhydroquinone, the sulfur accelerator is tetrabutylthiuram disulfide, and the thermoplastic polymer is ethylene-vinyl acetate.
- 81. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 45 wherein the hydroquinone is hydroquinone monomethyl ether, the sulfur accelerator is zinc diamyldithiocarbamate and the free radical initiator is 1,1-bis(t-butylperoxy)-3,3,5-trimethyl-cyclohexane.
- 82. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 54 wherein the hydroquinone is hydroquinone monomethyl ether, the sulfur accelerator is zinc diamyl-dithiocarbamate, the free radical initiator is 1,1-bis(t-butylperoxy)-3,3,5-trimethyl-cyclohexane and the thermoplastic polymer is an ethylene-propylene-diene monomers terpolymer.
- 83. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 45 wherein the hydroquinone is hydroquinone monomethyl ether, the sulfur accelerator is zinc dibutyldithiocarbamate and the free radical initiator is a mixture of dicumyl peroxide and 1,1-di[(t-butylperoxy) isopropyl]-benzene.
- 84. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 53 wherein the hydroquinone is hydroquinone monomethyl ether, the sulfur accelerator is zinc diamyldithiocarbamate, the free radical initiator is dicumyl peroxide and the thermoplastic polymer is linear low density polyethylene.
- 85. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 54 wherein the hydroquinone is mono-t-butylhydroquinone, the sulfur accelerator is tetrabutylthiuram disulfide and the free radical initiator is dicumyl peroxide.
- 86. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 54 wherein the hydroquinone is hydroquinone monomethyl ether, the sulfur accelerator is zinc diamyldithiocarbamate and the free radical initiator is 1,1-bis-(t-butylperoxy)-3,3,5-trimethyl-cyclohexane.
- 87. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 54 wherein the hydroquinone is hydroquinone monomethyl ether, the sulfur accelerator is zinc diamyldithiocarbamate, the free radical initiator is 1,1-bis-(t-butylperoxy)-3-3-5-trimethyl-cyclohexane and the elastomeric polymer is an ethylene-propylene-diene monomer terpolymer.
- 88. A polymer containing a scorch retarding crosslinking composition as defined in claim 45 wherein the hydroquinone is mono-t-butylhydroquinone, the sulfur accelerator is zinc dibutyldithiocarbamate and the initiator is selected from peroxyketals or dialkyl peroxides.
