The present invention generally relates to a system and method for implementing a scratch-off (“instant”) lottery ticket game, and more particularly to a method and system for facilitating multi-lingual play of such games.
“Scratch-off” or “instant-win” lottery tickets have enjoyed immense popularity in the lottery industry for decades. These games offer distinct advantages to the lottery authorities and are attractive to a broad spectrum of players. Typically, the tickets are printed in the primary language of a targeted population base. For example, the same themed ticket may be printed in different runs in English, Spanish, German, and so forth, depending on the intended country or other distribution locale.
However, as the population base grows more culturally diverse, particularly in larger metropolitan areas, one single language may no longer be dominant over a broad population spectrum. Entire sections or neighborhoods of a city or other locale may speak one language, while an adjacent neighborhood primarily speaks an entirely different language. The residents of these neighborhoods may not be comfortable with the other respective language. This pertains to play of lottery tickets in differing languages as well. Persons who are not fluent or comfortable with the language of the scratch-off (“instant”) lottery ticket may avoid playing the game for fear of not understanding the game rules or, even worse, not recognizing that their ticket may actually be a winning ticket. As the games continue to add greater prizes and more complex entertainment features, the reluctance to play by those not comfortable with the language of the ticket will correspondingly grow.
In the past, it has not been economically or commercially feasible to provide a multi-lingual game card or lottery ticket. The available surface area on a scratch-off ticket (often referred to as the ticket “real estate”) for the various game features, such as a game play area, instructions, security features, graphics, and so forth, is limited and cannot reasonably accommodate repetition of the pertinent game rules or instructions in different languages. Essentially, the only option was to provide separate production runs of tickets in the different languages.
U.S. Pat. No. 8,434,792 proposes a solution wherein a game on a single paper game card includes a game play area, and a first set of game instructions provided on the game card printed in a first language. A second set of the game instructions in a different second printed language is superimposed over the first set of game instructions. An indicator is provided on the game card to convey that the first set of game instructions are present and accessible by removing the second set of game instructions. Thus, the player has the option to read the game instructions in either or both of the first or second printed languages. Although this is a useful method and system, it requires substantial additional printing time, expenses, and materials.
The industry and public would benefit from still more improved methods to facilitate multi-lingual play of a game on a printed game card, such as a scratch-off lottery ticket.
Objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in part in the following description, or may be obvious from the description, or may be learned through practice of the invention.
In a particular embodiment, an instant lottery ticket game system and method includes a set of master instant lottery tickets (“master tickets”) for a common game. The master instant lottery tickets may be printed paper tickets, or may be electronically simulated tickets that are transmitted to and played by the player via an application running on a smart device, such as a mobile phone, tablet, computer, etc. The master tickets are produced for a single common game, for example all of the tickets produced for a common game identified by a single name (e.g., “Lucky Seven” instant scratch-off tickets). Such tickets may be produced under multiple production runs, wherein the prize structure for the expected value of the common game is implemented by winning tickets distributed throughout the production run(s).
Each master ticket includes a game play area with variable game play indicia that determines whether or not the ticket is a winning or losing ticket. The game play indicia is variable in that it changes from one ticket to the next. The game play area is covered by a removable scratch-off coating (SOC) layer, as is well-known in the industry. Each master ticket also includes static game instruction indicia (words and graphics) that does not change and is common to all of the master tickets in the common game. This indicia generally instructs the player on how to play the game, the potential prizes, and so forth. At least some or all of the game instruction indicia is in a master language, for example English.
Each of the master tickets further includes a code thereon that links the master ticket to the common game in a database. For example, all of the master tickets in the same common game will have the same code (which may encompass the same part or identifying information in a ticket-specific code, such as a validation code).
For each common game, one or more corresponding digital templates are produced and stored in a computer-accessible file, wherein each digital template contains the static game instruction indicia in a foreign language. For example, a respective digital template may be produced and stored in Spanish, French, German, and so forth.
It should be appreciated that the term “master language” in used herein to refer to the language of the primary printed or electronic ticket master ticket, and is not limited to any particular language. The term “foreign language” is used herein to refer to any language that is different than the master language.
A central server initially stores the digital templates for the common game, and is configured for communication with a player's smart device to download the digital templates via an application running on the player's smart device. In one embodiment, the digital templates for one or more of the common games are downloaded and stored on the player's smart device before the player even purchases a master ticket. For example, the digital templates may be downloaded to the player's smart device with the application. Upon entry of the code from the master ticket into the smart device, the application makes the stored digital templates available.
In an alternate embodiment, the digital templates are not downloaded and stored in the player's smart device, but are individually transmitted by the central server to the smart device upon receipt of the code from the smart device.
With the above system and method, the player enters (scans or otherwise inputs) the code from the master ticket into their smart device via the application on the device. The player is then provided with the option to select one of the digital templates stored on their smart device to view the game instruction indicia in the foreign language of the digital template.
In a particular embodiment, the digital templates are presented on the player's smart device as static non-interactive images. In other words, the player does not interact with the images in order to play the game or otherwise reveal the outcome of the game. With this embodiment, the digital templates may be presented as part of a generic instant lottery ticket image for the common game. For example, the digital template may be combined with a generic game play area to represent a complete ticket.
The code on each master ticket may serve only as a game-specific code for the common game, and not be specific to individual master instant lottery tickets within the common game. However, each master ticket may also include a separate ticket-specific code, such as a validation code that is linked to a validation file associated with the master ticket at the central server. As generally understood in the industry, the validation file contains ticket-specific information for validation and pay-out (redemption) of the master ticket.
In still another embodiment, the code can also be a ticket-specific code that also links the master instant lottery ticket to a ticket-specific file at the central server. For example, such a code may contain the common game identification data and the ticket specific data. A validation code (or modified validation code) may serve this function. The ticket-specific file can include a digital game play area corresponding to the game play area on the master ticket, wherein upon receipt of the ticket-specific code, the central server transmits the digital game play area to the player's smart device where the digital game play area is combined with the digital template and presented to the player as a complete digital counterpart to the master ticket. With this embodiment, the digital game play area may interactive, wherein the application on the player's smart device may also enable simulated play (e.g., simulated removal of a digital SOC layer) of the digital ticket on the smart device to reveal the winning or losing status of the master ticket. This embodiment is also particularly useful when some or all of the variable game play indicia on the master instant lottery ticket is in the master language. The digital game play area can include such indicia in the foreign language selected by the player.
In the above embodiment, the ticket-specific code may be the ticket validation code that is also linked to a validation file associated with the master ticket at the central server, wherein the digital game play areas are stored in the validation file.
The system and method also contemplate that each of the master instant lottery tickets is specifically configured to include an easily recognized symbol printed thereon that indicates to players that one or more of the foreign language digital lottery tickets is available for the master instant lottery ticket. For example, such symbol may be a multi-national caricature, similar to the Olympic Games characters and mascots.

The system and method should have appeal to players for its ease of operation and foreign language versatility.

The system 10 and method 100, 200 also contemplate that each master ticket 14 may be specifically configured to include an easily recognized symbol 46 printed thereon that indicates to players that one or more of the foreign language digital templates 26 is available for the master ticket 14. For example, such symbol 46 may be a multi-national caricature, similar to the Olympic Games characters and mascots, or any other suitable indicia (including words and/or graphics).
It should be appreciated that the host server 50 can include a network interface for providing communications over the network 48. A network interface can include any suitable components for interfacing with one more networks, including for example, transmitters, receivers, ports, controllers, antennas, or other suitable components.
The host server 50 can be any computing device and can include one or more processors and one or more computer-readable media. The computer-readable media can store instructions which cause the processor to perform the operations described herein, as well as other functions related to conduct of the overall game for the lottery authority.
The player's smart device 34 can be any portable computing device that can be used by a player to interface with the host server 50. For instance, the device 36 can be a wireless device, a personal digital assistant (PDA), portable gaming device, cellular phone, smart phone, tablet, navigation system, handheld GPS system, wearable computing device, a display having one or more processors, or other such device. In short, the player's smart device 36 can be any computer-device or system that can execute a gaming module to allow a player to interact with the host computer 50 as described herein.
The technology discussed herein makes reference to servers, computers, databases, software applications, and other computer-based systems, as well as actions taken and information sent to and from such systems. One of ordinary skill in the art will recognize that the inherent flexibility of computer-based systems allows for a great variety of possible configurations, combinations, and divisions of tasks and functionality between and among components. For instance, server processes discussed herein may be implemented using a single server or multiple servers working in combination. Databases and applications may be implemented on a single system or distributed across multiple systems. Distributed components may operate sequentially or in parallel.
At step 102, the master language tickets 14 are produced with the code 22 and multi-language enabled symbol 46 provided thereon.
Step 104 depicts generation of the foreign language digital templates 26, which are initially stored at the central server 50.
At step 106, the player purchases one or more of the master tickets 14 (paper or electronic).

At step 214, the digital game play area 30 corresponding to the foreign language digital template 26 selected by the player is retrieved by the central server 50 from the ticket-specific file 38 (e.g., the validation file) and downloaded to the player's mobile smart device 34.
At step 216, the mobile smart device 34 combines the digital template 26 and corresponding digital game play area 30 into an interactive digital ticket image of the master ticket 14.
At step 218, the player has the option simulate play of the digital ticket image on their mobile smart device 34 to reveal the predetermined outcome of the master ticket 14.
Alternatively, at step 220, the player can simply play the master ticket 14 with reference to the foreign language game play instructions 28 provided by the digital ticket image on their smart device.
At step 222, the player presents the actual master ticket 14 or the digital ticket image on their smart device for validation and redemption of winning master tickets 14.
