Claims
- 1. In the recovery a metal from a slurry of ore containing the metal, utilizing a tank having a slurry outlet, and a screen disposed in operative association with the slurry outlet for the prevention of solid material adsorbing particles therethrough, the process comprising the steps of: (a) leaching the metal from the ore, to dissolve the metal, utilizing a basic cyanide solution; (b) recovering the leached metal in solution by contracting the slurry with the solid material particles for adsorbing the metal from the solution; (c) screening the slurry flowing into the outlet to permit slurry to flow into the slurry outlet, the screen having screen openings dimensioned so as to prevent the passage of a significant number of particles therethrough; and (d) periodically linearly reciprocating the screen so as to provide a back flushing, self cleaning action thereto so as to keep it free and clear so that it will not clog and prevent the passage of slurry to the slurry outlet.
- 2. A process as recited in claim 1 wherein step (d) is practiced by effecting linear reciprocation of the screen so that the screen moves very slowly in a first direction, and then very quickly in a second direction, opposite the first direction, back flushing being effected during movement in the second direction.
- 3. A process as recited in claim 2 wherein coincident with the practice of step (d) particles of the adsorbing material are transported and concentrated at a volume adjacent the end of travel of the screen in the direction of slow movement thereof; and further comprising the step (e) of removing the concentrated particles from the volume adjacent the end of travel of the screen in the direction of slow movement thereof, to recirculate the particles to other tanks used in the leaching process.
- 4. A process as recited in claim 1 further utilizing a draft tube disposed centrally within the tank, and having an open bottom and an open top; and comprising the further step (f) of effecting circulation of slurry and particles within the tank through the bottom of the draft tube, and up through the top thereof.
- 5. A process as recited in claim 4 wherein the screen is disposed above and generally concentric with the draft tube and includes a centrally extending shaft having an agitator at the bottom thereof above the draft tube, and having a screen cleaning rotor within the screen; and wherein steps (d) and (f) are practiced by rotating the shaft so as to mechanically draw slurry and particles upwardly through the draft tube, while at the same time keeping the screen clear of obstructions.
- 6. A process as recited in claim 1 wherein step (b) is further practiced by substantially saturating the solution with oxygen by introducing generally pure oxygen into the solution in contact with the adsorbing material particles.
- 7. A process as recited in claim 1 wherein step (b) is further practiced by providing oxygen gas in the slurry in an amount significantly greater than obtained by contacting the slurry with air.
- 8. Apparatus for use in separating metal and other values from a slurry by adsorption with particles comprising:
- a tank for holding a slurry containing the values to be separated and a number of particles on which the values are to be adsorbed, said tank having a slurry outlet and a slurry inlet;
- screen means, comprising a screen body, operatively connected to said slurry outlet for screening the slurry flowing into said outlet to permit slurry to flow into said outlet, but to prevent the particles from flowing into the slurry outlet, the screen body having screen openings dimensioned so as to prevent the passage of a significant number of the particles therethrough;
- means for linearly reciprocating said screen body so as to provide a back flushing, self-cleaning, action thereto;
- said screen means comprising a first bearing which is substantially circular in cross-section, generally linearly extending, and has a first diameter;
- said screen body being conical having a first end thereof surrounding said first bearing, and a second end thereof remote from said first end, with screen openings disposed therein from said first end to said second end along the conical shape of said screen body;
- means for operatively mechanically connecting said second end of said screen body to said reciprocating means; and
- sealing means disposed between said first bearing and said screen body first end.
- 9. Apparatus as recited in claim 8 further comprising a second generally cylindrical bearing disposed adjacent said second end of said screen body and surrounding said screen body, said second bearing having a generally circular cross-section and having a second diameter significantly greater than said first diameter, and sealing means disposed between said second bearing and said screen body second end.
- 10. Apparatus for use in separating metal and other values from a slurry by adsorption with particles comprising:
- a tank for holding a slurry containing the values to be separated and a number of particles on which the values are to be adsorbed, said tank having a slurry outlet and a slurry inlet;
- screen means, comprising a screen body, operatively connected to said slurry outlet for screening the slurry flowing into said outlet to permit slurry to flow into said outlet, but to prevent the particles from flowing into the slurry outlet, the screen body having screen openings dimensioned so as to prevent the passage of a significant number of the particles therethrough;
- means for linearly reciprocating said screen so as to provide a back flushing, self-cleaning, action thereto; said slurry outlet comprising a pipe extending outwardly from a side wall of said tank;
- said screen means comprising screen body guides disposed generally vertically on opposite sides of said pipe, said screen body slidable in said screen body guides, and said screen body separating a portion of the interior of said tank from said pipe; and
- connecting means operatively connected to a top portion of said screen body for connecting said screen body to said reciprocating means; and a bottom divider disposed adjacent the bottoms of said guide means for preventing passage of slurry from said tank to said outlet pipe except through said screen body.
