Claims
- 1. A scroll-type machine for handling a working fluid, said scroll-type machine comprising:
- a shell;
- an orbiting and a non-orbiting scroll member, each scroll member having an end plate and a spiral wrap thereon, said spiral wraps being intermeshed with each other;
- a drive member for causing said orbiting scroll member to engage in relative cyclical orbiting motion with respect to said non-orbiting scroll member, said spiral wraps forming successive fluid pockets which move during normal operation between a radially outer position where said working fluid is at an outer pressure and a central position where said working fluid is at a central pressure.
- a central passage through said end plate of said non-orbiting scroll member for allowing fluid communication between an innermost of said fluid pockets and an access passage through said shell;
- a backpressure chamber disposed adjacent to an outer face of said end plate of said non-orbiting scroll member, said non-orbiting scroll member being mounted for axial compliance with respect to said orbiting scroll member; and
- a biasing passage through said end plate of said non-orbiting scroll member for allowing fluid communication between one of said fluid pockets and said biasing chamber, said biasing passage being in fluid communication with said central passage during only a portion of each of said cycles of orbiting motion.
- 2. The scroll-type machine as claimed in claim 1, wherein said biasing passage is in fluid communication with more than one of said fluid pockets during different portions of each of said cycles of orbiting motion.
- 3. The scroll-type machine as claimed in claim 1, wherein said biasing passage is in fluid communication with said innermost fluid pocket during said portion of each of said cycles and with an intermediate fluid pocket during a second portion of each of said cycles.
- 4. The scroll-type machine as claimed in claim 3, wherein pressure of said working fluid in said backpressure chamber is greater when said biasing passage is in fluid communication with said innermost fluid pocket than when said biasing passage is in fluid communication with said intermediate fluid pocket thereby providing dynamic biasing.
- 5. The scroll-type machine as claimed in claim 1, wherein said biasing passage is disposed adjacent to an inner flank surface of said spiral wrap of said non-orbiting scroll.
- 6. The scroll-type machine as claimed in claim 5, wherein said biasing passage is disposed adjacent to an innermost wrap of said spiral wrap of said non-orbiting scroll.
- 7. The scroll-type machine as claimed in claim 1, wherein said biasing passage is in fluid communication with said central passage only through said fluid pockets.
- 8. The scroll-type machine as claimed in claim 1, wherein said biasing passage is formed relatively narrow to minimize flow of said working fluid through said biasing passage in order to dampen fluctuations of pressure of in said backpressure chamber.
- 9. The scroll-type machine as claimed in claim 1, wherein said scroll-type machine is a compressor.
- 10. A scroll-type machine for handling a working fluid, said scroll-type machine comprising:
- a shell;
- an orbiting and a non-orbiting scroll member, each scroll member having an end plate and a spiral wrap thereon, said spiral wraps being intermeshed with each other;
- a drive member for causing said orbiting scroll member to engage in relative cyclical orbiting motion with respect to said non-orbiting scroll member, said spiral wraps forming successive fluid pockets which move during normal operation between a radially outer position where said working fluid is at an outer pressure and a central position where said working fluid is at a central pressure;
- a central passage through said end plate of said non-orbiting scroll member for allowing fluid communication between an innermost fluid pockets and an access passage through said shell;
- a backpressure chamber disposed adjacent to an outer face of said end plate of said non-orbiting scroll member, said non-orbiting scroll member being mounted for axial compliance with respect to said orbiting scroll member; and
- a biasing passage through said end plate of said non-orbiting scroll member for allowing fluid communication between one of said fluid pockets and said backpressure chamber, said biasing passage being disposed adjacent to said spiral wrap of said non-orbiting scroll member such that said biasing passage is in fluid communication with an intermediate fluid pocket during a portion of said cyclical orbiting motion and with said innermost fluid pocket during a different portion of said cyclical orbiting motion.
- 11. The scroll-type machine as claimed in claim 10, wherein said intermediate fluid pocket is out of fluid communication with said central passage and said innermost fluid pocket is in fluid communication with said central passage.
- 12. The scroll-type machine as claimed in claim 10, wherein said biasing passage is exposed to said central pressure when said biasing passage is in fluid communication with said innermost fluid pocket and is exposed to a second pressure which is intermediate said outer pressure and said central pressure when said biasing passage is in fluid communication with said intermediate fluid pocket.
- 13. The scroll-type machine as claimed in claim 12, wherein said backpressure chamber integrates said central and said second pressures during normal operation such that said backpressure chamber is at an average pressure during each of said cycles of orbiting motion, said average pressure being intermediate said central pressure and said second pressure.
- 14. The scroll-type machine as claimed in claim 13, wherein said biasing passage is in fluid communication with said central passage only through said fluid pockets.
- 15. The scroll-type machine as claimed in claim 10, wherein pressure of said working fluid in said backpressure chamber is greater when said biasing passage is in fluid communication with said innermost fluid pocket than when said biasing passage is in fluid communication with said intermediate fluid pocket thereby providing dynamic biasing of said non-orbiting scroll member.
- 16. The scroll-type machine as claimed in claim 10, wherein said biasing passage is formed relatively narrow to minimize flow of said working fluid through said biasing passage in order to dampen fluctuations of pressure in said backpressure chamber.
- 17. The scroll-type machine as claimed in claim 10, wherein said scroll-type machine is a compressor.
- 18. A scroll-type machine for handling a working fluid, said scroll-type machine comprising:
- a shell;
- an orbiting and a non-orbiting scroll member, each scroll member having an end plate and a spiral wrap thereon, said spiral wraps being intermeshed with each other;
- a drive member for causing said orbiting scroll member to engage in relative cyclical orbiting motion with respect to said non-orbiting scroll member, said spiral wraps forming successive fluid pockets which move during normal operation between a radially outer position where said working fluid is at an outer pressure and a central position where said working fluid is at a central pressure;
- a central passage through said end plate of said non-orbiting scroll member for allowing fluid communication between an innermost fluid pocket and an access passage through said shell;
- a backpressure chamber disposed adjacent to an outer face of said end plate of said non-orbiting scroll member, said non-orbiting scroll member being mounted for axial compliance with respect to said orbiting scroll member; and
- a biasing passage through said end plate of non-orbiting scroll member for allowing fluid communication between one of said fluid pockets and said backpressure chamber, said biasing passage being adjacent to an inner flank surface of an innermost wrap of said spiral wrap of said non-orbiting scroll member, said biasing passage being in fluid communication with said innermost fluid pocket during a first portion of each of said cycles of orbiting motion and with an intermediate fluid pocket during a second portion of each of said cycles.
- 19. The scroll-type machine as claimed in claim 18, wherein said innermost fluid pocket is in fluid communication with said central passage during each of said cycles.
- 20. The scroll-type machine as claimed in claim 18, wherein pressure of said working fluid in said backpressure chamber is greater when said biasing passage is in fluid communication with said innermost fluid pocket than when said biasing passage is in fluid communication with said intermediate fluid pocket, thereby providing dynamic biasing of said first scroll member.
