Claims
- 1. An apparatus for filling a tube with fluid comprising:
- a shaft, having a forward end, a rearward end and a forwardly open longitudinal bore rearwardly communicating with a high pressure fluid source;
- tube sealing means, adjacent the forward end of said shaft, for sealing said tube when said shaft is advanced into engagement with said tube;
- shaft reciprocating means for advancing and retracting the forward end of said shaft into and out of engagement with said tube;
- a forwardly open shroud, housing the forward end of said shaft when withdrawn, and having a rearward opening slidably engaging the forward end of said shaft rearward of said tube sealing means, the interior of said shroud communicating with a low pressure fluid source;
- external sealing means, about the forward end of said shroud, for sealing an external surface adjacent an end of said tube;
- shroud reciprocating means, engaging said shroud, for advancing and retracting said shroud forward and away from said external surface;
- low pressure fluid control means, communicating with said low pressure fluid source, for filling said tube with fluid when said shroud is advanced and said external sealing means seals said external surface before advancing said shaft, and for draining fluid form said tube after retraction of said shaft; and
- high pressure fluid control means, communicating with said high pressure fluid source, for further filling and pressurizing said tube when said shaft is advanced into engagement with said tube and said tube sealing means seals said tube, and for depressurizing said tube before said shaft is retracted.
- 2. An apparatus in accordance with claim 1 wherein said external sealing means comprises a gasket ring.
- 3. An apparatus in accordance with claim 1 wherein said shaft has a radially outwardly extending abutment surface inwardly of the shroud and wherein said shroud reciprocating means comprises: a stationary support and spring means, between the stationary support and the shroud, for biasing said shroud forwardly toward said external surface, as said shaft reciprocating means moves forwardly to advance said shaft into engagement with said tube, and said radially extending abutment surface engaging and retracting the shroud against the action of the spring means when the shaft is retracted away from said tube.
- 4. An apparatus in accordance with claim 1 wherein said shaft reciprocating means comprise a double acting hydraulic cylinder engaging the rearward end of said shaft and a stationary member, said cylinder acting in a direction parallel to said axis.
- 5. An apparatus for filling a tube with fluid comprising: p1 a shaft, having a forward end, a rearward end and a longitudinal axis, including: a rod having a forwardly open longitudinal bore rearwardly communicating with a fluid source; and a sleeve outward of said rod;
- tube sealing means, adjacent the forward end of said shaft, for sealing said tube when said shaft is advanced into engagement with said tube, including: a rod ring, connected to the forward end of said rod; a sleeve ring, connected to the forward end of said sleeve; and elastomeric ring between said rod ring and said sleeve ring having an annular surface for sealingly engaging a surface of said tube; and displacing means for axially displacing said rod and said sleeve relative to each other, axially compressing and decompressing, and radially expanding said contracting and elastomeric ring to engage and disengage said tube; and wherein said rod ring and sleeve ring have a greater dimension in a radial direction than said elastomeric ring adjacent its annular surface when said elastomeric ring is not being compressed, whereby said annular surface is of the elastomeric ring is nested between said rod and sleeve rings and extends beyond said rod and sleeve rings in said radial direction when said elastomeric ring is compressed between said rod and sleeve rings;
- a powered shaft reciprocating means for advancing and retracting the forward end of said shaft into and out of engagement with said tube;
- fluid control means, communicating with said fluid source, for filling and pressurizing said tube when said shaft is advanced into engagement with said tube and said tube sealing means seals said tube, and for depressurizing and draining fluid from said tube before said shaft is retracted.
- 6. An apparatus according to claim 5 wherein said tube sealing means is adapted to seal the inner surface of said tube, said rod ring and sleeve ring are disposed forwardly and rearwardly of said elastomeric ring, respectively, and said annular surface of said elastomeric ring extends radially outwardly to engage an inner surface of said tube when compressed between said rod and sleeve ring.
- 7. An apparatus in accordance with claim 6 wherein said displacing means comprises:
- sleeve backstop means moving radially inwardly toward said axis, after said shaft has been inserted into said tube, to engage the rearward end of said sleeve to prevent rearward movement of said sleeve as said shaft reciprocating means rearwardly withdraws said rod to seal the interior of said tube.
- 8. An apparatus in accordance with claim 7 wherein the rearward end of said sleeve includes an annular sleeve stop ring protruding outwardly of said sleeve and wherein said sleeve backstop means comprises two oppositely radially moveable blocks having a semi-annular inner surface through which said shaft extends.
- 9. An apparatus in accordance with claim 7 wherein said shaft reciprocating means comprise a double acting hydraulic cylinder engaging the rearward end of said rod and a stationary member, said cylinder acting in a direction parallel to said axis.
- 10. An apparatus in accordance with claim 7 including rod limiting means for limiting the extent to which said rod may be withdrawn to seal the interior of said tube after said shaft has been inserted into said tube and said sleeve backstop means have engaged the rearward end of said sleeve, said rod limiting means comprising:
- a rod abutment protruding from said rod rearward of said sleeve; and
- rod backstop means for moving radially inwardly to engage a rearward face of said rod abutment.
- 11. An apparatus in accordance with claim 10 wherein said rod abutment comprises a rod stop member threadedly and adjustably engaging said rod.
- 12. An apparatus in accordance with claim 11 wherein said rod backstop means comprises two semi-annular interior grooves in said semi-annular inner surface and said rod stop member is a ring receivable in said grooves.
- 13. An apparatus in accordance with claim 6 wherein said annular surface of said elastomeric ring is an outermost surface, and said rod ring and said sleeve ring each have an outermost surface, and the dimension of said outermost surface of the rod ring is less than the dimension of said outermost surface of the sleeve ring, and said outermost surface of the elastomeric ring is of smaller dimension than said outermost surfaces of said rod and sleeve rings.
- 14. An apparatus in accordance with claim 6 wherein said rod ring has outer forward edges which are convexly rounded.
- 15. An apparatus in accordance with claim 5 wherein said tube sealing means is adapted to seal the outer surface of said tube, said sleeve ring and rod ring are disposed forwardly and rearwardly of said elastomeric ring, respectively, and said annular surface of said elastomeric ring extends radially inwardly to engage an outer surface of said tube when compressed between said sleeve and rod rings.
- 16. An apparatus in accordance with claim 15 wherein said displacing means comprises:
- rod backstop means having radially inwardly toward said axis, after said shaft has been advanced into engagement with the exterior of said tube, to engage the rearward end of said rod to prevent rearward movement of said rod as said shaft reciprocating means rearwardly withdraws said sleeve to seal the exterior of said tube.
- 17. An apparatus in accordance with claim 16 wherein the rearward end of said rod includes an annular rod stop ring protruding outwardly of said rod and wherein said rod backstop means comprises two oppositely radially movable blocks.
- 18. An apparatus in accordance with claim 16 wherein said shaft reciprocating means comprises a two double acting hydraulic cylinders each engaging a beam centrally connected to the rearward end of said sleeve, and a stationary member, said cylinder acting in a direction parallel to said axis.
- 19. An apparatus in accordance with claim 16 including sleeve limiting means for limiting the extent to which said sleeve may be withdrawn to seal the exterior of said tube after said shaft has been advanced to engage the exterior of said tube and said rod backstop means have engaged the rearward end of said rod, said sleeve limiting means comprising:
- a sleeve backstop ring protruding from said rod, rearward of said sleeve and forward of the rearward end of said rod.
- 20. An apparatus in accordance with claim 19 wherein said sleeve backstop ring threadedly and adjustably engages said rod.
- 21. An apparatus in accordance with claim 15 wherein said sleeve ring, rod ring, and elastomeric ring have inner dimensions, said inner dimension of said sleeve ring being less than the inner dimension of the rod ring, and the elastomeric ring is of larger inner dimension than said sleeve and rod rings.
- 22. An apparatus in accordance with claim 15 wherein said sleeve ring has inner forward edges which are convexly rounded.
- 23. An apparatus for filling a tube with fluid comprising:
- a shaft, having a forward end, a rearward end and a longitudinal axis, including: a rod having a forwardly open longitudinal bore rearwardly communicating with a fluid source; and a sleeve outward of said rod;
- tube sealing means, adjacent the forward end of said shaft, for sealing said tube when said shaft is advanced into engagement with said tube, including: a rod ring, connected to the forward end of said rod; a sleeve ring, connected to the forward end of said sleeve; and elastomeric ring between said rod ring and said sleeve ring having an annular surface for sealingly engaging a surface of said tube; and displacing means for axially displacing said rod and said sleeve relative to each other, axially compressing and decompressing, and radially expanding said contracting and elastomeric ring to engage and disengage said tube; and wherein said rod ring and sleeve ring have a greater radial extent than said elastomeric ring adjacent its annular surface whereby said annular surface is nested inwardly between said rod and sleeve rings;
- shaft reciprocating means for advancing and retracting the forward end of said shaft into and out of engagement with said tube;
- fluid control means, communicating with said fluid source, for filling and pressurizing said tube when said shaft is advanced into engagement with said tube and said tube sealing means seals said tube, and for depressurizing and draining fluid from said tube before said shaft is retracted;
- wherein said tube sealing means is adapted for sealing the interior of said tube when said shaft is advanced to insert said shaft into said tube; said rod ring has a rearward radially extending face; said sleeve ring has a forward radially extending face; and said elastomeric ring is between the rearward face of said rod ring and the forward face of said sleeve ring;
- and wherein said displacing means comprises:
- sleeve backstop means moving radially inwardly toward said axis, after said shaft has been inserted into said tube, to engage the rearward end of said sleeve to prevent rearward movement of said sleeve as said shaft reciprocating means rearwardly withdraws said rod to seal the interior of said tube.
- 24. An apparatus in accordance with claim 23 wherein the rearward end of said sleeve includes an annular sleeve stop ring protruding outwardly of said sleeve and wherein said sleeve backstop means comprises two oppositely radially moveable blocks having a semi-annular inner surface through which said shaft extends.
- 25. An apparatus in accordance with claim 23 including rod limiting means for limiting the extent to which said rod may be withdrawn to seal the interior of said tube after said shaft has been inserted into said tube and said sleeve backstop means have engaged the rearward end of said sleeve, said rod limiting means comprising:
- a rod abutment protruding from said rod rearward of said sleeve; and
- rod backstop means for moving radially inwardly to engage a rearward face of said rod abutment.
- 26. An apparatus in accordance with claim 25 wherein said rod abutment comprises a rod stop member threadedly and adjustably engaging said rod.
- 27. An apparatus in accordance with claim 26 wherein said rod backstop means comprises two semi-annular interior grooves in said semi-annular inner surface and said rod stop member is a ring receivable in said grooves.
- 28. An apparatus in accordance with claim 23 wherein the outer dimensions of the rod ring are less than the outer dimensions of the sleeve ring, and the elastomeric ring is of smaller outer dimension than said rod and sleeve rings.
- 29. An apparatus for filling a tube with fluid comprising:
- a shaft, having a forward end, a rearward end and a longitudinal axis, including: a rod having a forwardly open longitudinal bore rearwardly communicating with a fluid source; and a sleeve outward of said rod;
- tube sealing means, adjacent the forward end of said shaft, for sealing said tube when said shaft is advanced into engagement with said tube, including: a rod ring, connected to the forward end of said rod; a sleeve ring, connected to the forward end of said sleeve; and elastomeric ring between said rod ring and said sleeve ring having an annular surface for sealingly engaging a surface of said tube; and displacing means for axially displacing said rod and said sleeve relative to each other, axially compressing and decompressing, and radially expanding and contracting and elastomeric ring to engage and disengage said tube; and wherein said rod ring and sleeve ring have a greater axial extent than said elastomeric ring adjacent its annular surface whereby said annular surface is nested inwardly between said rod and sleeve rings;
- shaft reciprocating means for advancing and retracting the forward end of said shaft into and out of engagement with said tube;
- fluid control means, communicating with said fluid source, for filling and pressurizing said tube when said shaft is advanced into engagement with said tube and said tube sealing means seals said tube, and for depressurizing and draining fluid from said tube before said shaft is retracted;
- wherein said tube sealing means is adapted for sealing the exterior of said tube when said shaft is advanced to engage the exterior of said tube; said rod ring has a forward radially extending face; said sleeve ring, has a rearward radially extending face; and said elastomeric ring is between the rearward face of said rod ring and the forward face of said sleeve ring;
- and wherein said displacing means comprises:
- rod backstop means moving radially inwardly toward said axis, after said shaft has been advanced into engagement with the exterior of said tube, to engage the rearward end of said rod to prevent rearward movement of said rod as said shaft reciprocating means rearwardly withdraws said sleeve to seal the exterior of said tube.
- 30. An apparatus in accordance with claim 29 wherein the rearward end of said rod includes an annular rod stop ring protruding outwardly of said rod and wherein said rod backstop means comprises two oppositely radially movable blocks.
- 31. An apparatus in accordance with claim 29 including sleeve limiting means for limiting the extent to which said sleeve may be withdrawn to seal the exterior of said tube after said shaft has been advanced to engage the exterior of said tube and said rod backstop means have engaged the rearward end of said rod, said sleeve limiting means comprising:
- a sleeve backstop ring protruding from said rod, rearward of said sleeve and forward of the rearward end of said rod.
- 32. An apparatus in accordance with claim 31 wherein said sleeve backstop ring threadedly and adjustably engages said rod.
