Claims
- 1. In the method of manufacturing a pneumatic tire having a laminated innerliner comprising at least two layers in which one of said layers has sealant properties, the steps comprising providing a first layer of said laminate with a polymeric material that cross-links when exposed to vulcanization temperatures, providing a sealant layer of said laminate with a peroxide compound and a polymeric material that at least partially degrades when exposed to a heat treatment in the presence of a peroxide compound yielding puncture sealant properties, assembling said layers into a laminate wherein said first layer is the outer layer and said sealant layer is an inner layer, subjecting said laminate to a heat treatment so that said polymeric material in said sealant layer is at least partially degraded, assembling said laminate into said tire and vulcanizing said tire.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said sealant layer of said laminate comprises a blend of a polymeric material that has been at least partially degraded and another polymeric material that has been at least partially cross-linked.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein said degraded polymeric material is selected from the group consisting of polyisobutylene, copolymers containing polyisobutylene and polyethylene oxide.
- 4. The method of claim 2 wherein said degraded polymeric material is selected from the group consisting of polyisobutylene, copolymers containing polyisobutylene and polyethylene oxide, and said cross-linked polymeric material is selected from the group consisting of natural rubber, copolymers of butadiene and styrene and halogenated butyl rubber, said polymeric materials being present in a ratio between 75%--25% cross-linked to 25%--75% degraded.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
This is a divisional application of Ser. No. 737,884, filed Nov. 2, 1976 now U.S. Pat. No. 4,140,167 which was a continuation-in-part application of Ser. No. 716,493, filed Aug. 20, 1976, now abandoned, which was in turn a continuation-in-part application of Ser. No. 615,266, filed Sept. 22, 1975, now U.S. Pat. No. 4,089,360.
