Claims
- 1. A process for inhibiting fuel vapour permeation in a component for storing or conveying hydrocarbon fuels, wherein said component includes an area of barrier discontinuity comprising the steps of covering said area of barrier discontinuity of said component with a sealing bead wherein said sealing bead comprises a barrier element for inhibiting fuel vapour permeation therethrough.
- 2. The process of claim 1, wherein said sealing bead is comprised of material which is thermally fusible to a polyethylene fuel system component.
- 3. The process of claim 2, wherein said area of barrier discontinuity is a polymeric fitting.
- 4. A process for producing a fuel system component comprising,
extruding a multi-layer parison from an extrusion head, said parison comprising a barrier layer for substantially inhibiting permeation of fuel vapours, enclosing said parison in a partible blow mold, blow molding said parison and cooling said parison to produce a molded product removing said molded product from said mold, said fuel system component having at least one area of barrier discontinuity, placing a bead of material on said fuel system component at said area of barrier discontinuity, and wherein said material of said bead comprises a barrier property for substantially inhibiting permeation of fuel vapours through said bead.
- 5. The process of claim 4 wherein said process further comprises removing flash from said molded product after said molded product is removed from said mold.
- 6. The process of claim 3 wherein said component is a fuel tank.
- 7. The process of claim 4 wherein said bead is formed from material extruded from an extrusion head.
- 8. The process of claim 5 wherein said bead is placed at said area of barrier discontinuity by means of a robot guided arm.
- 9. The process of claim 3 wherein said bead is a multi-layer material comprising at least one layer for substantially inhibiting permeation of hydrocarbon vapours.
- 10. The process of claim 4, wherein said barrier fuel sysytem component includes a polymeric fitting and said fitting comprises an area of barrier discontinuity.
- 11. A process for inhibiting fuel vapour permeation in a fuel system component intended for storing or conveying hydrocarbon fuel, wherein said component includes a wall structure and said wall structure has an area of barrier discontinuity comprising the steps of covering said area of barrier discontinuity of said wall structure externally with a sealing bead and fusing said sealing bead to the external surface of said wall structure and wherein said sealing bead comprises a barrier element for inhibiting fuel vapour permeation therethrough.
- 12. The process of claim 11 wherein said sealing bead is comprised of material which is thermally fusible to a polyethylene fuel system component.
- 13. The process of claim 12 wherein said area of barrier discontinuity is a polymeric fitting.
- 14. The process of claim 13 wherein said component is a fuel tank.
- 15. The process of claim 14 wherein said bead is a multi-layer material comprising at least one layer for substantially inhibiting permeation of hydrocarbon vapours.
- 16. A process for producing a fuel system component intended for storing or conveying hydrocarbon fuel comprising,
extruding a multi-layer parison from an extrusion head, said parison comprising a barrier layer for substantially inhibiting permeation of fuel vapours, enclosing said parison in a partible blow mold, blow molding said parison and cooling said parison to produce a molded product removing said molded product from said mold, said fuel system component having a wall structure, said wall structure including at least one area of barrier discontinuity, placing a bead of material on the external wall of said fuel system component over said area of barrier discontinuity, and fusing said bead to said external surface, and wherein said material of said bead comprises a barrier property for substantially inhibiting permeation of fuel vapours through said bead.
- 17. The process of claim 16 wherein said process further comprises removing flash from said molded product after said molded product is removed from said mold.
- 18. The process of claim 16 wherein said bead is formed from material extruded from an extrusion head.
- 19. The process of claim 17 wherein said bead is placed at said area of barrier discontinuity by means of a robot guided arm.
- 20. The process of claim 18 wherein said barrier fuel system component includes a polymeric fitting and said fitting comprises an area of barrier discontinuity.
