Claims
- 1. A glass composition suitable for use as a component of a sealing composition, the glass composition consisting essentially of:
70-75 wt % of PbO, 3-7 wt % of PbF2, 5-8 Wt % of Bi2O3, 5-7 wt % of B203, 2-7 wt %of ZnO, 1-3 wt % of Fe2O3, 0-2 wt % of CuO, 0-3 wt % of TeO2, and a trace <0.2 wt % of MnO2, the composition having a flow temperature of <350° C.
- 2. The glass composition of claim 1, having a temperature coefficient of expansion of between 4 and 16 ppm/° C.
- 3. The glass composition of claim 1, having one or more of V2O5, P2O5, TeO2, SnO2, Co3O4, Li2O, As2O3, Sb2O3.
- 4. The glass composition of claim 1, having 7 wt % B2O3, 8 wt % Bi2O3, 7 wt % ZnO, 5 wt % PbF2, and 3 wt % TeO2.
- 5. The glass composition of claim 1, having 6 to 7 wt % B2O3, 6 to 7 wt % Bi2O3, 3 to 4 wt % ZnO, 5 to 6 wt % F, 1 to 2 wt % TeO2, 0.1 to 0.15 wt % MnO2 2 to 3 wt % Fe2O3 and 1 to 2 wt % CuO.
- 6. A sealing composition comprising 70-99 wt % of the glass composition of claim 1, and 1-30 wt % of a ceramic filler, the resulting combination of glass/tiller compositions having a TCE of 1 to 5 ppm/° C. and a flow temperature of less than 400° C.
- 7. The sealing composition of claim 6, having sufficient adhesion to glass and to metal to enable a glass fiber sealed to metal, to withstand a bend test of 3 mm deflection of the fiber, 2 mm away from the seal.
- 8. The sealing composition of claim 6 having a durability sufficient to maintain seal hermeticity <1×10−9 Atmos cc/s without optical power losses of packaged devices tested for 2000 hrs at 85° C. and 85% relative humidity.
- 9. A glass composition consisting essentially of:
70-75 wt % of PbO, 3-7 wt % of PbF2, 5-8 wt % of Bi2O3 5-7 wt % of B203 2-5 wt % of ZnO 1-3 wt % of Fe2O3 0-2 wt % of CuO 0-2% of TeO2 and a trace <0.2% of MnO2.
- 10. A method of manufacturing the sealing composition of claim 6, comprising the steps of: mixing the PbO, and metal oxide components, and reacting the mixture with ammonium bifluoride to create PbF21 and adding the low TCE ceramic filler.
- 11. A method of manufacturing a seal using the sealing composition of claim 6, comprising the steps of placing a preform of the sealing composition of claim 6 over a gap to be sealed, and applying localized heating to cause the preform to flow into the gap.
- 12. The method of claim 12, the localized heating being one of induction heating or laser heating.
- 13. An optical component having a fiber and a package, the fiber being sealed to the package using the sealing composition of claim 6.
- 14. A method of offering a data transmission service over an optical network along an optical fiber sealed using the composition of claim 6.
