Claims
- 1. A method of sterilizing contents disposed in open mouthed pouches formed of heat sealable material, said method comprising the steps of gripping each of a plurality of pouches at opposite lateral edges adjacent an open mouth thereof, housing the thus gripped pouches in a chamber, introducing a heated sterilizing media into the chamber with the pouch contents being rendered sterile and the pouches being heated to a sealing temperature, and while the pouches are still housed in the chamber sequentially closing each pouch mouth and automatically hermetically sealing each pouch whereby contents contamination is precluded upon the removal of the pouches from the chamber.
- 2. The method as defined in claim 1 wherein the hermetic seal forming step is performed by applying pressure against opposite walls of each pouch adjacent its mouth.
- 3. The method as defined in claim 1 including the step of post heat-sealing the fused mouths of the pouches after the removal thereof from the chamber.
- 4. The method as defined in claim 1 including the step of holding the mouths of the pouches spread open during the performance of the sterilization step.
- 5. The method as defined in claim 4 including the step of housing the pouches in the chamber with their open mouths uppermost.
- 6. The method as defined in claim 1 including the step of evacuating the chamber after housing the pouches and prior to introducing the heated sterilizing media into the chamber.
- 7. The method as defined in claim 1 including the step of evacuating the chamber after the sterilizing of the pouches and prior to the sealing of the pouches.
- 8. The method as defined in claim 1 including the step of evacuating the chamber before and after the sterilizing of the pouches.
- 9. The method as defined in claim 1 wherein the pouch contents are rendered sterile through the ingress of the sterilizing media into each pouch through the open mouth thereof.
- 10. The method as defined in claim 9 including the step of evacuating the chamber after the sterilizing of the pouches and prior to the sealing of the pouches.
- 11. The method as defined in claim 1 wherein the mouths are sequentially closed one after the other in a single closing operation.
- 12. The method as defined in claim 9 including the step of holding the mouths of the pouches spread open during the performance of the sterilization step.
- 13. A method of sterilizing contents disposed in open mouthed pouches constructed of heat sealable material, said method comprising the steps of housing the pouches in a closed chamber, evacuating the chamber, thereafter introducing a heated sterilizing media into the chamber with the pouch contents being rendered sterile and the pouches being heated to a sealing temperature, evacuating said chamber, thereafter closing sequentially the mouths under pressure to fuse the same closed while at sealing temperature, and removing the pouches from the chamber.
- 14. The method as defined in claim 13 including the step of housing the pouches in the chamber with their open mouths uppermost.
- 15. The method as defined in claim 13 including the step of housing the pouches in the chamber with their open mouths uppermost, and gripping each pouch at opposite lateral edges adjacent the mouth thereof.
- 16. The method as defined in claim 14 including the step of holding the mouths of the pouches spread open during the performance of the sterilization step.
