Claims
- 1. A method for a mobile subscriber to control cell hand-off in a multicellular CDMA communication system while roving among individual cells, each cell associated with a base station which transmits a global pilot code, where the subscriber has a preexisting communication link with one of the base stations, comprising the steps of:
- a) monitoring transmission power of the preexisting communication level;
- b) receiving by said mobile subscriber a plurality of transmissions which include pilot codes transmitted by a plurality of candidate base stations besides the preexisting communication link;
- c) selecting a selected transmission from one of said candidate base stations and determining if its global pilot code is valid thereby identifying a selected candidate base station, if said global pilot code is not valid, repeating step b-c;
- d) acquiring said valid global pilot code from said selected base station;
- e) synchronizing an initial bi-directional handshake communication between said mobile subscriber and said selected base station with a minimized transmit power; and
- f) establishing a new communication link and abandoning said preexisting communication link to thereby define said new communication link as the preexisting communication link if said minimized transmit power between said mobile subscriber and said selected base station is less than the transmit power of said preexisting communication link.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of acquiring said valid global pilot code from said selected base station further comprises the steps of:
- di) selecting a global code seed associated with one of said plurality of candidate base stations from a plurality of global code seeds stored in a memory;
- dii) searching for a global pilot code using said selected global code seed; and
- diii) performing said search to a maximum expected phase shift between the preexisting communication link and said selected candidate base station.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of synchronizing an initial bi-directional handshake communication further comprises the steps of:
- ei) selecting said global pilot code associated with said selected base station from a plurality of global pilot codes stored in a memory;
- eii) acquiring a short sync code from said selected base station using said selected global pilot code;
- eiii) if said short sync code cannot be acquired, selecting a received transmission associated with a different candidate base station; and
- eiv) repeating steps eii and eiii until a global pilot code associated with a selected base station is received.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein the steps of synchronizing an initial bi-directional handshake communication further comprises the steps of:
- ev) acquiring a fast broadcast channel based upon phase information obtained from said received short sync code;
- evi) if said fast broadcast channel cannot be acquired, selecting a received transmission associated with a different candidate base station;
- evii) repeating steps eii-evi until said global pilot code associated with a selected base station is received; and
- eviii) acquiring said global pilot code using phase information obtained from said fast broadcast channel.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of synchronizing an initial bi-directional handshake communication further comprises the steps of:
- ei) transmitting a short access code by said mobile subscriber with a selected transmit power to said candidate base station; and
- eii) detecting a return transmitted signal from said candidate base station within a predetermined period of time, whereby said selected transmit power is said minimized transmit power.
- 6. A mobile subscriber system that controls cell hand-off in a multicellular CDMA communication system while roving among individual cells, each cell associated with a base station which transmits a global pilot code, where the subscriber has a preexisting communication link with one of the base stations, comprising:
- means for monitoring transmission power of the preexisting communication level;
- means for receiving by said mobile subscriber a plurality of transmissions which include global pilot codes transmitted by a plurality of candidate base stations not involved with said preexisting communication link;
- means for selecting a transmission from one of said candidate base stations as a valid global pilot code;
- means for acquiring said valid global pilot code;
- means for synchronizing an initial bi-directional handshake communication between said mobile subscriber and a selected base station associated with said valid global pilot code with a minimized transmit power; and
- means for establishing a new communication link and abandoning said preexisting communication link to thereby define said new communication link as the preexisting communication link when said minimized transmit power between said mobile subscriber and said selected base station is less than the transmit power of said preexisting communication link.
- 7. The system of claim 6 wherein the means for acquiring said valid global pilot code further comprises:
- means for selecting a global code seed associated with one of said plurality of candidate base stations from a plurality of global code seeds stored in a memory;
- means for searching for a global pilot code using said selected global code seed; and
- means for performing said search to a maximum expected phase shift between the preexisting communication link and said selected candidate base station.
- 8. The system of claim 7 further comprising means for synchronizing said transmission between the mobile subscriber and said selected base station.
- 9. The system of claim 7 wherein the means for synchronizing further comprises:
- means for sequentially exchanging predetermined signal codes between said mobile subscriber with one of said plurality of candidate base stations;
- means for acquiring a fast broadcast channel based upon phase information obtained from said received short sync code;
- means for selecting a received transmission associated with a different candidate base station when said sequentially exchanging predetermined signal codes is not completed within a predetermined time period or said fast broadcast channel cannot be acquired; and
- means for acquiring a global pilot code using phase information obtained from said fast broadcast channel.
