Claims
- 1. A seat belt tension sensor for attachment to a anchor plate in a vehicle, the anchor plate having an aperture comprising:
a) a housing having a cavity and a flange extending into the cavity, the flange having a hole therethrough; b) a hub located in the cavity and disposed over the flange, the anchor plate aperture located over the hub; c) at least one sensor attached to the hub, the sensor generating an electrical signal in response to the sensor being placed in tension, the electrical signal changing as a function of tension on the seat belt; and d) a fastener extending through the hole of the flange and the hub, the fastener affixed to the vehicle; the hub moveable between a first position in which the hub transfers the seat belt tension to the sensor and a second position in which the hub transfers the seat belt tension to the housing.
- 2. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 1, wherein the hub has a disc portion and a rim, the sensor located on the disc portion.
- 3. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 2, further comprising a cover mounted to the housing and a plurality of springs located between the cover and the disc portion, the springs adapted to switch between the first and second positions.
- 4. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 1, wherein the sensor is a strain gage resistor.
- 5. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 2, wherein a plurality of strain gage resistors are located on the disc portion surrounding the rim.
- 6. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 5, wherein the resistors are connected to form a wheatstone bridge.
- 7. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 1, wherein the housing has a recess, the anchor plate passing through the recess.
- 8. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 1, wherein the anchor plate is connected to a seat belt.
- 9. A seat belt tension sensor for attachment to a seat belt in a vehicle comprising:
a) housing attached between the vehicle and the seat belt; b) a limit structure located in the housing; and c) a sensor attached to the limit structure, for generating an electrical signal in response to the sensor being placed in tension, the electrical signal changing as a function of tension on the seat belt, the limit structure movable between a first position in which the limit structure transfers the seat belt tension to the sensor and a second position in which the limit structure transfers the seat belt tension to the housing.
- 10. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 9, wherein the limit structure further comprises:
a) the housing having a cavity and a flange extending into the cavity, the flange having a hole therethrough; b) a hub located in the cavity and disposed over the flange; c) an anchor plate having an aperture, the anchor plate located over the hub; and d) a fastener extending through the hole of the flange and the hub, the fastener affixed to the vehicle; the hub moveable between a first position in which the hub transfers the seat belt tension to the sensor and a second position in which the hub transfers the seat belt tension to the housing.
- 11. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 10, wherein the hub has a disc portion and a rim, the sensor located on the disc portion.
- 12. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 11, further comprising a cover mounted to the housing and a plurality of springs located between the cover and the disc portion, the springs adapted to determine switching between the first and second positions.
- 13. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 12 wherein the sensor is a strain gage resistor.
- 14. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 13, wherein a plurality of strain gage resistors are located on the disc portion surrounding the rim.
- 15. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 14, wherein the resistors are connected to form a wheatstone bridge.
- 16. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 15, wherein the housing has a recess, the anchor plate passing through the recess.
- 17. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 10, wherein the anchor plate is connected to a seat belt.
- 18. A seat belt tension sensor for attachment to a anchor plate in a vehicle, the anchor plate having an aperture and being fastened to the vehicle by a fastener, the seat belt tension sensor comprising:
a) a housing having a cavity and a flange extending into the cavity, the flange having a hole therethrough; b) a hub located in the cavity and disposed over the flange, the anchor plate aperture located over the hub, the hub having a disc, the disc having an attached rim; c) at least one strain gage resistor attached to the disc, the strain gage resistor generating an electrical signal in response to the sensor being placed in tension, the electrical signal changing as a function of tension on the seat belt; and d) the fastener extending through the hole of the flange and the hub, the fastener affixed to the vehicle; the hub transferring the seat belt tension to the strain gage.
- 19. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 18, wherein the hub limits the tension on the resistor by engaging the housing.
- 20. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 19, further comprising a cover mounted to the housing and a plurality of springs located between the cover and the disc portion.
- 21. A seat belt tension sensor for mounting to a seat belt comprising:
a) an anchor plate having a hole therethrough; b) a fastener extending through the hole of the anchor plate, the fastener being smaller than the hole through the anchor plate, the fastener affixed to the vehicle; c) a sensor mounted between the anchor plate and the fastener, the sensor adapted to generate an electrical signal, the electrical signal changing as a function of tension in the seat belt; and d) the anchor plate moveable between a first position in which the plate transfers seat belt tension to the fastener through the sensor such that the electrical signal is proportional to the amount of seat belt tension, the anchor plate movable to a second position in which the plate transfers seatbelt tension directly to the fastener such that the electrical signal remains substantially constant.
- 22. A seat belt tension sensor for measuring the amount of tension in a seat belt in a vehicle, the seat belt having an attached anchor plate that is attached to the vehicle with a fastener, the anchor plate having a hole, the seat belt tension sensor comprising:
a) a limit structure located between the anchor plate and the fastener, the limit structure comprising:
a1) a housing having a cavity and a flange extending into the cavity, the flange having a hole therethrough; and a2) a hub located in the cavity and disposed over the flange, the anchor plate located over the hub, the fastener extending through the hole of the flange and the hub, the fastener affixed to the vehicle; and b) a sensor mounted to the hub for generating an electrical signal in response to the seat belt being placed in tension, the electrical signal changing as a function of tension on the seat belt, the hub moveable between a first position in which the hub transfers the seat belt tension to the sensor and a second position in which the hub transfers the seat belt tension to the housing.
- 23. A seat belt tension sensor for measuring the amount of tension in a seat belt in a vehicle, the seat belt having an attached anchor plate that is attached to the vehicle with a fastener, the anchor plate having a mounting hole, the seat belt tension sensor comprising:
a) a housing; b) a strain member located in the housing; c) a strain sensitive resistor formed on the strain member; and d) the fastener extending through the housing, the mounting hole and affixed to the vehicle, the tension in the seat belt is passed through the strain member into the fastener and to the strain sensitive resistor to provide an indication of the tension in the seat belt.
- 24. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 23, further comprising:
a) a cutout located in the seat belt plate; b) a pair of projections extending into the cutout; c) a pair of springs mounted over the projections; d) an actuator mounted adjacent the springs; e) the strain member mounted adjacent the actuator, the actuator transferring the tension from the springs to the strain member.
- 25. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 24 wherein the actuator has a bump that contacts the strain member.
- 26. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 24 wherein the anchor plate is slidably retained by a pair of rails attached to the housing and a cover mounted over the anchor plate.
- 27. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 23, further comprising:
a) a slot located in the housing, the strain member mounted in the slot; b) an actuator pin mounted to the seat belt plate, the actuator pin in contact with the strain member, the actuator pin applying pressure from the anchor plate to the strain member.
- 28. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 27 wherein a spring is mounted in the slot between the housing and the strain member.
- 29. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 27 wherein a vibration absorbing member is mounted between the fastener and the housing.
- 30. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 24 wherein the anchor plate is slidably retained by a pair of rails attached to the housing.
- 31. A seat belt tension sensor for measuring the amount of tension in a seat belt in a vehicle, the seat belt having an attached anchor plate that is attached to the vehicle with a fastener, the anchor plate having a hole, the seat belt tension sensor comprising:
a) a housing having a slot; b) a spring mounted in the slot; c) a strain member mounted in the slot, the strain member generating an electrical signal in response to the seat belt being placed in tension, the electrical signal changing as a function of tension on the seat belt; d) an actuator mounted to the seat belt plate, the fastener extending through the housing and seat belt plate; and e) the anchor plate moveable between a first position in which the anchor plate transfers the seat belt tension to the strain member through the actuator and a second position in which the anchor plate transfers the seat belt tension to the fastener.
- 32. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 31 wherein the anchor plate is slidably retained by a pair of rails attached to the housing.
- 33. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 31 wherein the actuator is a pin.
- 34. A seat belt tension sensor for measuring the amount of tension in a seat belt in a vehicle, the seat belt having an attached anchor plate that is attached to the vehicle with a fastener, the anchor plate having a hole, the seat belt tension sensor comprising:
a) a housing; b) the anchor plate having a cutout; c) a strain member mounted in the cutout, the strain member generating an electrical signal in response to the seat belt being placed in tension, the electrical signal changing as a function of tension on the seat belt; d) an actuator mounted in the cutout adjacent the strain member; e) the fastener extending through the housing and anchor plate hole; and f) the anchor plate moveable between a first position in which the anchor plate transfers seat belt tension to the strain member through the actuator and a second position in which the anchor plate transfers the seat belt tension to the fastener.
- 35. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 34 wherein the anchor plate is slidably retained by a pair of rails attached to the housing.
- 36. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 34 wherein the anchor plate has at least one projection extending into the cutout.
- 37. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 36 wherein a pair of springs are mounted over the projections.
- 38. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 37 wherein the actuator is mounted adjacent the springs.
- 39. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 38 wherein the actuator has a bump extending therefrom, the bump contacting the strain member.
- 40. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 39 wherein at least one resistor is mounted on the strain member, the resistor changing the electrical signal when tension is placed thereon.
- 41. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 40 wherein th e resistor is connected to an external electrical circuit by a wire harness.
- 42. The seat belt tension sensor according to claim 34 wherein the anchor plate is mounted between the housing and a cover.
