Claims
- 1. A seat recliner for use in a seat assembly having a seatback supported for pivotal movement relative to a seat bottom, said seat recliner comprising:
- a recliner mechanism operable for adjusting the angular position of the seatback relative to the seat bottom, said recliner mechanism including a portion at a first end that is adapted to be secured to one of the seat bottom or seatback and a movable member defining a second end opposite said first end that is adapted to be connected to the other of the seat bottom or seatback, said recliner mechanism controlling the movement of said movable member relative to said portion; and
- a memory dump mechanism operable for moving the seatback between said angular position and a forward dumped position, said memory dump mechanism being connected between said second end of said recliner mechanism and the other of the seat bottom or seatback, and being adapted to releasably secure said second end of said recliner mechanism to the other of said seat bottom or seatback.
- 2. The seat recliner of claim 1 wherein said memory dump mechanism is mounted to the other of the seat bottom or seatback and includes a latch assembly normally operable in an unreleased mode wherein said second end of said recliner mechanism is fixedly secured to the other of the seat bottom or seat back and a release mode for permitting movement of said second end of said recliner mechanism relative to the other of the seat bottom or seatback.
- 3. The seat recliner of claim 2 wherein the latch assembly of said memory dump mechanism in said unreleased mode is adapted to engage said second end of said recliner mechanism only in a predetermined position relative to said latch mechanism when the seatback is in a position other than said forward dumped position.
- 4. The seat recliner of claim 3 wherein the latch assembly of said memory dump mechanism in said unreleased mode is adapted to engage said second end of said recliner mechanism in said predetermined position relative to said latch mechanism when the seatback is moved from said forward dumped position to said angular position.
- 5. The seat recliner of claim 4 wherein the latch assembly of said memory dump mechanism in said unreleased mode is adapted to engage said second end of said recliner mechanism in a second position relative to said latch mechanism when the seatback is in said forward dumped position.
- 6. The seat recliner of claim 2 wherein said recliner mechanism includes a first housing defining said portion and a recliner rod defining said movable member, said recliner rod having a first rod end supported on said first housing.
- 7. The seat recliner of claim 6 wherein said memory dump mechanism includes a second housing adapted to be secured to the other of the seat bottom or the seatback and said recliner rod includes a second rod end defining said second end of said recliner mechanism, said second rod end supported on said second housing for movement between a first position and a second position.
- 8. The seat recliner of claim 7 wherein said second rod end being in said first position when said seatback is in said angular position and said second position when said seatback is in said forward dumped position.
- 9. The seat recliner of claim 8 wherein said latch assembly of said memory dump mechanism in said release mode is adapted to permit sliding movement of said second housing relative to said recliner rod from said first position toward said second position, wherein said latch assembly of said memory dump mechanism in said unreleased mode is operable for releasably latching said second housing to said second rod end in said first position whereat the seat occupant can selectively adjust the angular position of the seatback by selectively shifting said recliner mechanism into an angle adjusting mode, and wherein movement of the seatback from said forward dumped position to said angular position causes said second housing to slide from said second position to said first position whereat said latch assembly of said memory dump mechanism is automatically shifted into its unreleased mode for retaining said second housing in said first position and thereby retaining the seatback in said angular position.
- 10. A vehicle seat comprising:
- a seat bottom;
- a seatback supported for pivotal movement relative to said seat bottom;
- a recliner mechanism operable for adjusting the angular position of said seatback relative to said seat bottom, said recliner mechanism including a portion at a first end that is secured to one of said seat bottom or seatback and a movable member defining a second end opposite said first end that is connected to the other of said seat bottom or seatback, said recliner mechanism controlling the movement of said movable member relative to said portion; and
- a memory dump mechanism operable for moving said seatback between said angular position and a forward dumped position, said memory dump mechanism being connected between said second end of said recliner mechanism and the other of said seat bottom or seatback, and being adapted to releasably secure said second end of said recliner mechanism to the other of said seat bottom or seatback.
- 11. The vehicle seat recliner of claim 10 wherein said memory dump mechanism is mounted to the other of said seat bottom or seatback and includes a latch assembly normally operable in an unreleased mode wherein said second end of said recliner mechanism is fixedly secured to the other of said seat bottom or seat back and a release mode for permitting movement of said second end of said recliner mechanism relative to the other of said seat bottom or seatback.
- 12. The vehicle seat recliner of claim 11 wherein the latch assembly of said memory dump mechanism in said unreleased mode is adapted to engage said second end of said recliner mechanism only in a predetermined position relative to said latch mechanism when the seatback is in a position other than said forward dumped position.
- 13. The vehicle seat recliner of claim 12 wherein the latch assembly of said memory dump mechanism in said unreleased mode is adapted to engage said second end of said recliner mechanism in said predetermined position relative to said latch mechanism when the seatback is moved from said forward dumped position to said angular position.
- 14. The vehicle seat recliner of claim 13 wherein the latch assembly of said memory dump mechanism in said unreleased mode is adapted to engage said second end of said recliner mechanism in a second position relative to said latch mechanism when the seatback is in said forward dumped position.
- 15. The vehicle seat recliner of claim 10 wherein said linear recliner mechanism includes a first housing defining said portion and a recliner rod defining said movable member, said recliner rod having a first rod end supported on said first housing.
- 16. The vehicle seat recliner of claim 15 wherein said memory dump mechanism includes a second housing adapted to be secured to the other of the seat bottom or the seatback and said recliner rod includes a second rod end defining said second end of said recliner mechanism, said second rod end supported on said second housing for movement between a first position and a second position.
- 17. The seat recliner of claim 16 wherein said second rod end being in said first position when said seatback is in said angular position and said second position when said seatback is in said forward dumped position.
- 18. The seat recliner of claim 17 wherein said latch assembly of said memory dump mechanism in said release mode is adapted to permit sliding movement of said second housing relative to said recliner rod from said first position toward said second position, wherein said latch assembly of said memory dump mechanism in said unreleased mode is operable for releasably latching said second housing to said second rod end in said first position whereat the seat occupant can selectively adjust the angular position of the seatback by selectively shifting said recliner mechanism into an angle adjusting mode, and wherein movement of the seatback from said forward dumped position to said angular position causes said second housing to slide from said second position to said first position whereat said latch assembly of said memory dump mechanism is automatically shifted into its unreleased mode for retaining said second housing in said first position and thereby retaining the seatback in said angular position.
