Claims
- 1. A chair comprising:
- a chair frame;
- a seat portion mounted to said chair frame;
- a back portion having a flexible internal support frame disposed within a back cushion to allow for flexure of a lower portion of said back portion and lower back extension of a user of the chair; and
- quick disconnect mounting means for coupling said back portion to said chair frame in an easily removable manner, said quick disconnect mounting means including mounting bracket means for pivotally coupling the lower portion of said back portion to said chair frame and clip lock means for pivotally coupling the upper portion of said back portion to said chair frame.
- 2. The chair of claim 1 wherein said chair frame is a wheelchair having a plurality of generally vertical, spaced tubes, and wherein said mounting means engages said vertical, spaced tubes.
- 3. The chair of claim 1 wherein said internal support frame includes upper and lower back support frames pivotably coupled together within a lower portion of said cushion.
- 4. The chair of claim 3 wherein said back portion further includes hinge means disposed within said back cushion for pivotably coupling said upper and lower back support frames and allowing for forward and aft pivoting displacement of said upper back support frame relative to said lower back support frame.
- 5. The chair of claim 4 wherein said hinge means includes locking means for securing said upper and lower back support frames in a given fixed relative orientation.
- 6. The chair of claim 5 wherein said hinge means further includes a pivot pin and said locking means includes a pair of clamps each disposed on a respective end of said pivot pin and adapted for secure, fixed engagement with said pivot pin.
- 7. The chair of claim 6 further comprising access means within said back cushion for providing access to said clamps from outside of said back cushion and allowing for the exercise of manual control of said clamps in either permitting free pivoting displacement or providing secure, fixed engagement between said upper and lower back support frames.
- 8. The chair of claim 7 wherein said access means includes a pair of hollow, elongated tubes disposed within said back cushion and between a respective one of said clamps and an opening in an outer surface of said back cushion.
- 9. The chair of claim 4 wherein said hinge means includes a hinge pin coupled to said upper and lower back support frames.
- 10. The chair of claim 4 wherein said hinge means includes first stop means disposed within said back cushion for limiting forward pivoting displacement of said upper back support frame relative to said lower back support frame.
- 11. The chair of claim 10 wherein said first stop means is adjustable to allow for forward pivoting displacement of said upper back support frame over a range of displacement values.
- 12. The chair of claim 4 wherein said hinge means includes second stop means disposed within said back cushion for limiting aft pivoting displacement of said upper back support frame relative to said lower back support frame.
- 13. The chair of claim 12 wherein said second stop means is adjustable to allow for aft pivoting displacement of said upper back support frame over a range of displacement values.
- 14. The chair of claim 4 wherein said hinge means includes first and second stop means disposed within said back cushion for limiting forward and aft pivoting displacement of said upper back support frame relative to said lower back support frame over a range of displacement values.
- 15. The chair of claim 14 wherein said first and second stop means are adjustable to allow for increasing or decreasing the range of forward and aft pivoting displacement of said upper back support frame relative to said lower back support frame.
- 16. The chair of claim 15 further comprising access means for providing access to said first and second adjustable stop means from outside of said back cushion.
- 17. The chair of claim 16 wherein each of said first and second stop means includes a respective threaded pin coupled to said lower back support frame for engaging and limiting the pivoting displacement of said upper back support frame.
- 18. The chair of claim 14 further comprising means for biasing said upper back support frame disposed within said back cushion to a neutral position intermediate said forward and aft displacement limits.
- 19. The chair of claim 18 wherein said means for biasing said upper back support frame includes forward and aft springs attached to said lower back support frame for engaging said upper back support frame and urging it to said neutral position.
- 20. The chair of claim 19 wherein each of said springs is coupled to a respective one of said stop means.
- 21. The chair of claim 20 wherein said means for biasing said upper back support frame to said neutral position is manually adjustable permitting said upper back support frame to be biased over a range of selected neutral positions.
- 22. The chair of claim 21 further comprising access means for permitting access to said means for biasing said upper back support frame over a range of selected neutral positions from outside of said back cushion.
- 23. The chair arrangement of claim 2 wherein said mounting means includes a plurality of first hinge bars each fixedly coupled to a respective mounting bracket means and pivotally coupled to a lower portion of said back assembly.
- 24. The chair arrangement of claim 23 wherein a lower portion of said back portion includes a second plurality of hinge bars each pivotally coupled to a respective one of said first hinge bars.
- 25. The chair arrangement of claim 24 further comprising at least one pivot pin for coupling said first and second pluralities of hinge bars.
- 26. The chair arrangement of claim 25 wherein each of said first hinge bars is coupled to a respective one of said spaced tubes by means of a mounting bracket means.
- 27. The chair arrangement of claim 26 wherein said internal support frame includes upper and lower back support frames pivotally coupled together within a lower portion of said cushion and said clip lock means couples said upper back support frame to a respective one of said spaced tubes.
- 28. The chair arrangement of claim 27 wherein each of said clip lock means is adapted to slide along the length of a respective one of said spaced tubes as said upper and lower back support frames are pivotally displaced relative to one another.
