Claims
- 1. Apparatus for selectably gripping a tool or planar member in a chuck having two flexible arms defining a slot with said chuck being contained within an enclosing housing and with the interior portion on the open end between the arms being adapted for gripping the tool or planar member when the arms are forced together comprising:
- lever means pivotally attached to the flexible arms of the chuck and having an arm in offset relation to the pivotal attachment for extending through an opening in the housing,
- collar means having divergently sloped interior surfaces attached to said lever means for engaging the outer edges of the flexible arms on either side of the slot therebetween, and
- means associated with said housing for biasing said sloped surfaces of said collar means in wedging angled relation against the outer surfaces of the flexible arms for maintaining a closure force on the flexible arms relative to the slot defined therebetween.
- 2. Apparatus in accordance with claim 1 wherein said biasing means includes resilient spring means for applying a force to said extending arm of said lever means at a point offset from said pivotal attachment and in a direction for maintaining closure engagement between said divergently sloped surfaces of said collar means and the flexible arms.
- 3. Apparatus in accordance with claim 2 wherein said lever means includes an elongated flat main body portion adapted to fit within the slot between the flexible arms and with said arm extending therefrom in an L-shaped configuration, said collar means being attached to said body portion in transverse relation so that said sloped surfaces face away from said arm.
- 4. Apparatus in accordance with claim 2 wherein a pivot pin extends transversely through the slot between the flexible arms, said lever means main body portion having a notch extending thereinto from the edge opposite said arm for internally receiving the pivot pin with said notch being located in proximity to the end of said main body portion opposite the end from which said arm extends.
