Claims
- 1. A security apparatus for a firearm adapted to fire a non-impact ammunition cartridge, said firearm including a trigger assembly manually actuated by a trigger member and an integrated backstrap module which houses an electronic firing apparatus for generating a firing-signal, said security apparatus comprising:an input means for accepting and storing a plurality of parameter signals indicative of a physical state of said firearm; a mode setting means for determining and selectively placing said firearm in one of an awake mode, a sleep mode and an authorized mode; and an enabling means for evaluating said plurality of said parameter signals, thereby permitting said firing apparatus to generate and communicate said firing signal to said ammunition cartridge in response to an actuation of said trigger member only when each of said plurality of parameter signals indicate that said firearm is prepared to fire and said mode setting means determines that said firearm is in said authorized mode.
- 2. A security apparatus according to claim 1, wherein:said sleep mode is a base operation mode for said firearm, wherein a display screen of said firearm is deactivated during said sleep mode; and said mode means places said firearm in said sleep mode when said firearm is not in one of said awake mode and said authorized mode.
- 3. A security apparatus according to claim 2, wherein:said backstrap module includes a keypad having a pressure sensitive switch manually actuatable when an operator grips said firearm; and said mode means places said firearm into said awake mode when said input means determines that said pressure sensitive switch has been actuated by said operator.
- 4. A security apparatus according to claim 3, wherein:said keypad includes a plurality of pressure sensitive switches manually actuatable when said operator grips said firearm; and said mode means places said firearm into said awake mode when said input means determines that at least one of said plurality of pressure sensitive switches has been manually actuated.
- 5. A security apparatus according to claim 4, wherein:said mode means places said firearm into said sleep mode when said input means determines that a predetermined time has passed since said pressure sensitive switches have been actuated.
- 6. A security apparatus according to claim 4, wherein:said input means accepts an authorization code inputted by a predetermined sequential actuation of said pressure sensitive switches after said firearm is placed in said awake mode; and said mode means places said firearm in said authorized mode when said inputted authorization code matches a predetermined authorization code.
- 7. A security apparatus according to claim 6, wherein:said firearm is manufactured with a predetermined manufacturing code; and said input means will accept said inputted authorization code only after said manufacturing code has been inputted to said input means by a predetermined actuation of said pressure sensitive switches which matches said predetermined manufacturing code.
- 8. A security apparatus according to claim 7, wherein:said input means requiring input of said manufacturing code only once, before a first use of said firearm.
- 9. A security apparatus according to claim 4, wherein:said plurality of parameters signals include a grip signal for indicating that said firearm is being gripped properly for firing; and said input means determines that said grip signal is consistent with said firearm being prepared to fire when said input means determines that at least two of said plurality of pressure sensitive switches are simultaneously actuated.
- 10. A security apparatus according to claim 4, wherein:said plurality of parameters signals include an ammunition signal for indicating that said ammunition cartridge is loaded in said firearm properly; and said input means determines that said ammunition signal is consistent with said firearm being prepared to fire when said input means determines that an electrical resistance through said ammunition cartridge matches a predetermined electrical resistance.
- 11. A security apparatus according to claim 10, wherein:said input means includes a testing means for issuing a low voltage electrical signal through said cartridge and measuring said electrical resistance to said low voltage signal against said predetermined electrical resistance.
- 12. A security apparatus according to claim 4, wherein:said plurality of parameters signals include a trigger pull signal for indicating that said trigger member has been properly deflected; and said input means determines that said trigger pull signal is consistent with said firearm being prepared to fire when said input means determines that said trigger member has been deflected a predetermined amount.
- 13. A security apparatus according to claim 12, wherein:said input means determining that said firearm is not prepared to fire a subsequent time when said trigger member has not moved a predetermined distance back to an initial rest position after an initial firing of said firearm; said predetermined distance is greater than a movement of said trigger member due to a recoil of said firearm.
- 14. A security apparatus according to claim 4, wherein:said plurality of parameters signals include a grip signal for indicating that said firearm is being gripped properly for firing, a trigger pull signal for indicating that said trigger member has been properly deflected and an ammunition signal for indicating that said ammunition cartridge is loaded in said firearm properly; and said input means determines that said grip signal is consistent with said firearm being prepared to fire when said input means determines that at least two of said plurality of pressure sensitive switches are simultaneously actuated, that said trigger member has been deflected a predetermined amount and that an electrical resistance through said ammunition cartridge matches a predetermined electrical resistance.
- 15. A security apparatus according to claim 6, wherein:said plurality of parameters signals include a grip signal for indicating that said firearm is being gripped properly for firing, a trigger pull signal for indicating that said trigger member has been properly deflected and an ammunition signal for indicating that said ammunition cartridge is loaded in said firearm properly; and said input means determines that said grip signal is consistent with said firearm being prepared to fire when said input means determines that at least two of said plurality of pressure sensitive switches are simultaneously actuated, that said trigger member has been deflected a predetermined amount and that an electrical resistance through said ammunition cartridge matches a predetermined electrical resistance.
- 16. A security apparatus according to claim 6, wherein:said input means accepts a cancellation code inputted by a predetermined sequential actuation of said pressure sensitive switches after said firearm is placed in said awake mode; and said mode means places said firearm in said sleep mode when said inputted cancellation code matches a predetermined cancellation code.
