- (e) determining if said workpiece arrives at said second work station;
- (f) repeating steps (a) through (e); and
- (g) continuing operation of at least one other work station of said assembly line without regard to the status of an operation performed on said workpiece in said second work station.
- 4. A method for transferring a workpiece within an asynchronously operating assembly line provided with at least first and second work stations comprising the steps of:

- (d) preparing said first work station to receive another workpiece after assuring said workpiece exits from said first work station;
- (e) determining if said workpiece arrives at said second work station;
- (f) repeating steps (a) through (e); and
- (g) continuing transfer of an additional workpiece between other work stations of said assembly line without regard to the status of the transfer of said workpiece from said first work station to said second work station.
- 6. A method for transferring a workpiece within an asynchronously operating assembly line provided with at least first and second work stations comprising the steps of:
- (a) indicating at said first work station that said workpiece is ready for transfer from said first work station to said second work station;
- (b) indicating when said second work station is prepared to receive said workpiece;
- (c) assuring said workpiece exits from said first work station responsive to aid indications in steps (a) and (b);
- (d) preparing said first work station to receive another workpiece after assuring said workpiece exits from said first work station;
- (e) repeating steps (a) through (d); and
- (f) continuing operation of at least one other work station of said assembly line without regard to the status of the transfer of said workpiece from said first work station to said second work station.
- 7. A method for transferring a workpiece within an asynchronously operating assembly line provided with at least first and second work stations comprising the steps of:
