Claims
- 1. An apparatus for refining the magnetic domain wall spacing of grain-oriented silicon steel strip, said apparatus comprising:
- an anvil roll means contacting one surface of said strip for support thereof;
- a segmented scribing roller means including segments having scribing surfaces for engaging a surface of the strip opposite said one surface, said scribing roller means further including means resiliently supporting the segments for imposing a uniform mechanical deformation in a general direction transversely to a rolling direction of the strip by said scribing segments;
- means for arranging said scribing segments side-by-side under a clamping force sufficient to present scribing surfaces across the width of the strip and to permit relative positioning of said segments to accommodate crowning of the anvil roll means, and
- means for controlling the position of said anvil roll means relative to said scribing roller means at opposite sides of said strip to establish a rolling pressure contact area wherein said strip is scribed.
- 2. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said anvil roll means includes a solid body having a strip engaging surface for support of the strip across the width thereof during mechanical deformation by said scribing roller means.
- 3. The apparatus according to claim 1 further including cooling means for said anvil roll means.
- 4. The apparatus according to claim 1 further including drive means for rotating said anvil roll means.
- 5. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said means for resiliently supporting includes a controllable fluid pressure chamber for load bearing support of said scribing segments.
- 6. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said means resiliently supporting the scribing surfaces of said segments include an arbor having a resilient support surface contacting said segments to control the pressure applied by said segment to the strip across the width thereof.
- 7. The apparatus according to claim 6 wherein said resilient support surfaces includes bladder ribs protruding radially of the arbor.
- 8. The apparatus according to claim 7 wherein said bladder ribs comprise inflatable lengths of an elastomeric bladder secured between raised ribs extending lengthwise of said arbor.
- 9. The apparatus according to claim 8 further comprising fluid supply means including a valve for supplying a fluid pressure medium to said bladder ribs to provide a uniform scribing pressure across the width of the strip.
- 10. The apparatus according to claim 1 further including cooling means for said scribing roller means.
- 11. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein each of said scribing segments have a disk-like configuration formed by parallel side walls extending from a central opening defined by an annular bore to an annular external face having radially protruding ridges defining said scribing surfaces.
- 12. The apparatus according to claim 1 further including drive means for rotating said scribing roller means.
- 13. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said means for resiliently supporting includes an arbor having an internal cavity coupled with means for supplying fluid under pressure to control a contour of a body portion of the arbor, said body portion supporting said segments.
- 14. The apparatus according to claim 13 wherein said anvil roll means includes a roller having an internal cavity coupled with means for supplying a coolant medium through the cavity.
- 15. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said scribing surfaces extending along said segments in a direction generally parallel with a rotational axis of said scribing roller means.
- 16. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said scribing surfaces are arranged along said segment to impart scribing generally transversely to a rolling direction of the strip.
- 17. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said scribing surfaces of the segmented scribing roller means includes projections extending generally axially to the scribing roller means to impart a scribe pattern generally transverse to said rolling direction of the strip.
- 18. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the scribing surfaces of each segment of said segmented scribing roller means includes oblique projections in the form of a pattern of oblique portions extending in a direction to the opposite sides of the scribing segment.
- 19. An apparatus according to claim 18 wherein the oblique projections of adjacent ones of said scribing segments form chevron patterns extending to the opposite sides of the roll.
- 20. The apparatus according to claim 19, wherein adjacent ones of said scribing segments have projections forming a chevron pattern.
- 21. The apparatus according to claim 20 wherein said projections are spaced apart from one another on the scribed segment thereof by a distance of about 2 to 15 mm.
- 22. The apparatus according to claim 20 wherein said scribed segments impart scribed lines on the strip each extending at an angle of 10.degree. to 20.degree. from the perpendicular to the strip rolling direction.
